Weird Tree

Usually, the foliage or branches of a tree are what we notice. However, this tree's striking trunk and bark caught my eye on a wet Saturday afternoon.

Wow. That's a weird tree.
But take a look at this one:

Basically the entire bark of the tree has been worn down by rain and the 100% humidity. Washington state is amazing.

Did you use the gradients feature on the background to make the top b&w and the bottom color?

Baltimore Oriole

We spent part of Mother's Day at Brookside Gardens in Silver Spring, MD, where we encountered a male Oriole while he was trying to catch a mate. He'd call, she'd answer, but she was in no mood yet for the dance.

I caught him as he was flitting from tree to tree. They are very elusive birds!

Shot was cropped, he was about 100 yards away high up in a tree when he dropped off in flight.

Umm.. :)

What was this for? School? What was the assignment?

Yes, it was for school. There was no required subject, just consistent quality and the required quantity. I took this digital shot during the shoot for the class (Holga for class, the digital was for myself).

It's just a fun shot, take from it what you will.:)

We had a thunderstorm yesterday, and I managed to get this photo. Actually, the best lightning was happening during daylight, and by the time it got dark enough for some decent photos it had quieted down. There is some lean in the buildings from the wide-angle lens I was using, I tried to fix it up a bit (perspective correction), but found I was losing too much of the lightning on the side to fix it completely.

Oh, I saw this little guy (or gal?) by the garden hose the other day. Actually it's quite large compared to the usual lizards around here, probably twice as big.

Mind you I can't control these on my camera. I'll get a higher end digital someday...

Always love lightening. How did you capture this? I notice you had shutter speed at 10 sec, do you just leave it open until the lightening happens and then close it? I'm guessing it's mainly by luck and repitition. 10 sec at time until you get lucky?
