I was happy to try out my new flash on Sunday. Oddly, the bugs were quite scarce compared to even a few days ago. (rain! :D)

ps: Thanks in a big way to those who have recently commented on my pix.

also: epicwelshman, I really like your "Thistle and bee". It's just right.

Thanks!

I was wondering about your off-camera flash. You have a D40, so was it wireless somehow, or wired off-camera? I have an SB-600 and I really want to get that sucker off-camera!

I used the SU-4 mode, which makes the SB-800 a "super-slave" i.e. wireless but no TTL control. I don't know that much about it since I've only had the flash since Saturday. Also, the article ( http://strobist.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html middle of the long page) that tipped me toward the 800 says that the 600 doesn't have this mode. You'll need an on-camera commander either built-in (D80 or higher) or as an optional accessory, an expensive Nikon wire, or a simple 3rd party slave adapter for around 30 bucks.

Taken with a Canon S3 IS at school. Pretty happy with how it turned out without a tripod. Although I wish it had a better bokeh (oh well, that's what you get with a P&S).

and BTW does anyone know why the colors are less saturated? Is it ImageShack itself or is it just the web browser or something?

Freebooter.....?

Freebooter... Do you edit your photos at all? They just look so awesome! I am going to be getting the D40x and the 105mm lens like you have and would love to know how to get pictures like you do!

Its not that good, but this was the first day i've had my camera! What do you guys think? The plane isn't completely focused.

DSC_0093.jpg

The plane looks pretty sharp from the pic you posted (at full res it may be noticeable). It could have just been the blur from the plane moving or the window if took it from a plane (I just tried a couple of days ago and none of the pics were sharp) , not necessarily the focusing itself. And what lens are you using btw (just wondering because I just got the D 40 a couple weeks ago)

I didn't take it from a plane, I went to the top of the parking garage at the airport and took it from there. I was using a nikon 55-200mm(I got the kit that came with two lenses and dvds and a bunch of stuff). How are you liking your D40?

Edit: Does anybody have the new Nikon 70-300mm lenses? If so how do you like it, I'm thinking about buying it.

Infectious Emotion

Pilotkid: Great work on the panning with the plane! And a friendly warning, we need to stick to one pic per day, otherwise the mods get upset.

Puppy...

Not your usual, sharp puppy shot... but somehow I liked the effect of the slow shutter speed. She was a rescue from Sonora, Mexico, and was experiencing the Pacific NW for the first time... Canon A95.

Epicwelshman: I love the thistle and bee photo. Nice color capture, composition.

Freebooter: I'm loving your bug friends and neighbors. It's almost as if they just wait for you to show up with your camera so they can pose... Now I really want one of those macro lenses in addition to a superwide. There goes the budget... ;)

Taken yesterday at Glasgow Museum of Transport. This was one of the few exhibits that wasn't obstructed by either barriers or signs saying "Do not touch" .

Thanks, glad you liked it.

Campfire

I discovered that photographing fire is very cool. I was experimenting with some of the shutter speed settings on my camera on a trip to Maine and came away with some nice photographs of fire. The flames really look intense and alive.
