I really like this shot. Did you use any filters? I have been trying to take shots like this (i.e. directly into the sun) but the foreground is silhouetted, and the background over exposed. I also have a D40x with 18-200VR and have tried several (nearly all) combinations of shutter speed and aperture.
 
M@lew, I usually don't get too excited about b+w images, but your last one really caught my eye as being exceptional. :)

I'm sure not everybody in here loves empty waves, but I do!!:p

I saw this guy playing pool in a somewhat seedy, smoky old bar in Portland called Sam's, which is now defunct - replaced by a McDonalds... Of course I got his name. Scanned from quick workprint on a flatbed once upon a time...
