im not talking about AWD to cope with off road or snow. you try taking some of the turns in RWD car that you can take in an AWD car and get back to me. try it on route 1 in Cali, but then you might not be able to get back to me. do it somewhere where there arent cliffs. dont want to loose any MR members.
Oh please. I'm a subaru nut and even I know that's bogus. AWD does not give you magic capability to take turns faster. Peak cornering speed is a function of tires and suspension. Where AWD does help is corner exit when you put the power down, but that's not what you were implying.
AWD is only a bit more fun to drive as a well sorted FWD car. With the exception of an Evo with S-AYC, AWD cars understeer out of the box unless seriously provoked (and when provoked, it's drastic and difficult to clean up). Adding swaybars and changing suspension certainly helps, I know because I did it, but you will never get the progressive power-oversteer that is "fun" in RWD cars. There is simply too much traction, so you'll speed up, lift the front end... and understeer. If you have 400 whp and you do break traction in a gear higher than 2nd, all hell breaks loose and I wouldn't call it fun unless you're on an airstrip or something similar.
AWD is fun because it's a point-and-squirt car. You point it where you want it to go, and floor it. If you start to run wide, ease off and it'll come back in line. It's easy. If you want to balance your car in the neutral stance on the cusp of oversteer, buy a RWD car.
