I had a VW Beetle, and it was phenomenal. It handled better than any other car I've driven. The quality was also very high compared to the other cars I see daily.

My experience (I've worked at dealerships for the past 3+ years) is VW's are not very reliable, but as far as the build quality on the interior and such, it's definitely above average. I like the new Passat, awesome looking car, I have yet to drive one though. As far as handling, I suggest driving a 350z, S2000 or even MX-5, it's like night and day.

Speaking of night and day, look at the price tag. You're comparing a 15k car to a 50k car.

When I read this I literally started laughing out loud. They must make the VW's different over there then they do here :p , I know the Jettas available here were made in Mexico.

Cars for the American market are deliberately made with a much softer ride than those for Europe, otherwise they'd seem a tad firm to your softy butts compared to all the Buicks and Caddys you guys plump for. :p

My car has stiffened and lowered sports suspension and low profile tyres, and you can enter a corner at any sensible speed and the car tracks through straight and true - no understeer and no wallowing from body roll. The GTI T does have completely different handling to the standard Golf - I had a regular 1.6 as a courtesy car while mine was in for a service for the day and the difference is very pronounced. But you'll know that from your experience as a dealer. ;)

Secondly, this car does have fantastic build quality - it'll be three years old to the day when I hand it back on the 27th - it has had two scheduled services and four new tyres, but nothing has gone wrong on it at all - not one issue. Furthermore, there isn't a single squeak or rattle from the dash or any of the trim whatsoever. It's built like concrete. :)

By the way, I have driven the Passat - the A6 is better, which is why I'm getting one. :D

a GTI (The MK IV's) ran roughly $20kish new, the MK V's at $22k, a 350z is around $28 or so. The new MX5's start at $21k.

The issue I have with the GTI's handling is that the MK IV's suspension system is ancient, and the car simply can't be made to handle as well as a Honda (their primary FWD competition) with a wishbone independent rear suspension (EM2 Si, DC2/4 Integras). Even the SRT-4 would outhandle a GTI, though I would certainly drive a GTI, even a standard Golf before driving one of those.

That reminds me of the time I spoke to an employee of the New York DMV... we were working on a technical issue (I forget what, now) and while we were waiting for something to happen, I asked him the funniest license plate he'd seen recently. His answer:

3M TA3

Think about it. ;)

You don't need a front plate in Alberta? Hmm, learn something new everyday.

Why not take off the bracket if you don't need a front plate?

It looks ghastly with the front braket on without a plate.

PS. climhazzard85 An S2000 starts at $50300, and you're still comparing cars that are vastly more expensive then the one you are comparing to.

Well, here it's $34k so it's a whopping ~$10k difference. Not sure where you're getting $15k to $50k.

If your car dosent have mounting holes for a plate in the front (like if you have a corvette, 92-02 trans am/firebird) you don't have to have one on the front.

My friends dad has a 2005 S2000. That car is so awesome. One time his moms murano was getting fixed, and his dad has an infiniti G35x and was away so I got a ride in it. I love the digital dashboard and it seemed quite powerful to me. His MOM was driving it, so I don't even know how much more agressively it could have been driven :).

VW's are not reliable IMO. We have a Touareg and that car has had so many problems. Thank god it is under warranty. The trunk lock has broken 2 times (one time a part broke, one time a part fell off), the radio buttons have gotten stuck, there was some problem with the steering system, clogged fuel injectors, 2nd ($300) battery and its not cheap to fix. An oil change in that baby from the dealer is about $62.00.

We had a New New Passat as a loaner one time. It is much more spacious than the older Passats, a very different feel to it. It seemed really nice though. My friends mom has a Passat 1.8T wagon and they have spent a TON of money maintaining it.

My friends dad that has the s2000 also has a G35x sedan. I think that car has an outstanding value. $35,000, 298hp, AWD, everything you would want in a car.
---------------

I want my dad to have his midlife crisis. Yea, a Land Rover Discovery, 0-60 in.....10 seconds- quite snappy.

I mostly pulled it out of a hat, really bad guestimation. What I should have done is researched it, then I could have said you're comparing a $22000 car to a $50300 car (Canadian dollars are different then American dollars). Still a huge difference. It's like comparing a BMW 330 to an M5. They're in different classes. I'm not boasting, I'm just saying compare cars with similar values.

Really? A friend's dad had a 98 to 00 corvette (forget which year exactly) and it didn't have mounting holes for a plate but he was told he had to order a bracket for the plates. He never did, and whenever he was pulled over he used the excuse that the bracket had been order and it's in the mail. Laws are different everywhere though.

I like the law where you're from though, some cars lines can be spoiled by a plate.

I wish you could get an oil change in the UK for the equivalent of £30. Try £80 - 100 instead. That's for 1 hour's labour. The cost of the oil is extra.

If your state requires a front license plate, the dealership that sells the car is legally required to install one. The only way to get a car from a PDI (Pre Delivery Inspection) Without a front plate installed would be to sign a waiver making you (not the dealership) responsible for the violation.

I have lived in 2 states that have been like that, and worked in a Dealership at one of them. Maybe not all states that require front plates are like this, but most are.

Just kidding, I don't own a car. The public transportation in Berlin is almost perfect and gas and insurance would be too expensive for me.

cheers
