My beloved 2004 Land Rover Discovery Series II SE7 on the mountain side near my home (in a sanctioned off-roading area).

I love the '98 Discovery LSE. It looks very well kept. The 4.6 liter V8 in the '03 and '04 Discovery greatly improved performance over the earlier 4 liter, but the 4 liter is safer for someone with a new license. :D

My dad has the same car as you, only an '03 SE7 and its black and doesn't have the brush guard. He has 18" wheels though, I assume you but 16"s on for off-roading. There is quite a difference between the 4.0 v8 and the 4.6 v8. There are 4.0 6 cyl engines. The 4.0 is ok, but a little more power for passing would be nice.

I really like my LSE, although not as powerful or comfortable as the Discovery II's, it still has that commanding feeling and go anywhere attitude. My only gripes other than power are FUEL ECONOMY esp with SMALL gas tank and the requirement of premium fuel, and the cupholders (pop out of the dash, not the ones to the right and the left of the shifter found on the newer ones) can only fit a dixie cup, but then block the HVAC controls.

I hate the cup holders in my car as well. They run in tandom at the rear of the center console. Once you place your beverage there shifting becomes cumbersome and no longer enjoyable. Not only that but you have no place to rest your right arm with anything in there. Thank god for sealable containers that I can just throw where ever I see fit :)

The Disco looks great in black. I almost bought a black '03 SE, but I found this '04 with the locking center diff for almost the same money. Yes, I swapped the 18's for off-roading, and because the 16's improve the ride quality, eliminating some of the chopiness from the short wheelbase. Manually bumping it down into third gear seemed to help when passing in my dad's '01 with the 4.0. In most conditions, though, the 4.0 is perfectly acceptable. Remarkable, considering it is out of a 1960's Buick. :) It is also extremely durable and reliable when cared for properly. Perfect for an off-roader.

I've always had an eye for the LSE, as the unique chrome bumpers give them a classy look. A major upside of the Series I Disco is that it is easier to repair and modify than the Series II, which relies upon a lot of electronics. They're nice when they work, but they can strand you on the trail when they fail. If I built a dedicated trail rig, I would use a Disco I. If you haven't taken yours off the beaten path yet, you should definitely give it a go. You'll love your Rover even more, and make your Jeep-owning friends jealous. :D

The bigger cupholders, from '02 onward, were about as major an upgrade as the 4.6. There are actually a few on eBay if you wanted to install some. They simply screw into the transmission tunnel, and they should fit the Disco I. The cupholders on my old Freelander were on top of the dashboard, where an emergency maneuver or pothole would create a deluge down the stereo and into the heater. I love eccentric British cars. :)

The very strange thing about my dad's 03 disco is that it does have the CDL hooked up (all the DII's up to 03 had the CDL but linkage to engage it). I dunno if it was an option or what. We are the original owners and he never modified it. Unfortunately, like many other D1's, my CDL is stuck in the unlocked position. Hopefully a little WD40 from underneath will loosen it up so that I won't have to take out the center console and regrease it.

Yea I have seen those cupholders, I might get a pair- they're $60, but then again the map pocket does a pretty good job. As for Freelanders, I HATE them. We've had them as loaner cars and they just seem to be really cheep and poorly designed. My mom refers to them as "the mistake".

A lot of times when I want to pass and I floor it, it still wants to hang out in 4th gear and no downshift. Jumping down to 3rd manually seems like a good idea.

I actually just got back from off roading. I went up to this "road" in my town that is dirt and unmaintained. Its basically all dirt, mud, and big puddles. So my friend and I were going along, it was doing an amazing job getting through everything. The road diverged into two directions, and randomly we decided to go left. So we started going up the road, I look ahead and it just looks like wet dirt. Then all of a sudden the right side of the truck sunk into the ground. I put a little more pressure on the gas and we go a little further and the wheels start spinning. I put it in reverse and I go a 10 feet and the wheels start spinning. Let me tell you now this road is in the middle of nowhere, it goes through a nature preserve and there is no cell phone service. So I put it in drive and again we get stuck, I put it in reverse and we're stuck. By that time our legs were shaking we were so scared. My friend got out and pushed it and we got out within 30 seconds. The left wheels had a perfectly firm driving surface (I wish I had front and rear lockers, as well as a working center one). It scared the S*** out of us. luckily we got out alive. When we were stuck though the mud was up past the running boards. There must have been an underground stream or something.

I love BMWs! They really are the ultimate driving machine. I had the pleasure of driving and X3 and a 7 series last week.

Do the X5s have the angel eye headlights? jw

hah, i love BMWs too :D

and to answer your headlights question, yeah, the X5s got the angel eye headlights in the 2004 refresh

I never under understood why the X5 had down hill decent control, but no low range 4wd. If you're gonna have it get down the hill, you should make it so it can get back up. :p I really love the exterior original x5 styling, and I almost like it more than 2008 x5, but the two are beautiful. I just hate BMW interiors, they have never done much for me. They're nice, but they're pretty spartan and not very unique.

To RoverMan:

Land Rovers do seem to have a lot of oddities. Online I saw a bunch of LE marked Discoveries but they had the chrome bumpers, full wood interior, and boost alloy wheels found on the LSE. I looked at my neighbors D1 and it was an "SE" but lacked the dual sunroofs, which is what defines an SE from and SD along with power seats, which hers had.

Yea, me and my friend were kinda dumb going off in there alone with no tools. We didn't expect there to be like sink holes. Technically, the road is public so other than a little dirt and puddles thats all we expected.

I can't even say how much I love my disco though. I always loved Land Rovers. I was going to get my dads 2003 because he never drives it (he commutes 150 miles a day so as you know that would not be economical) but he is going to replace it something. Its also in the shop right now, I forget what it needs but they had to order parts. The D1 in some ways I like more than the DII. D1 feels more rugged and in some ways I like the styling of my LSE, it just seems overall complete. I drove our Grand Cherokee yesterday and I just like hated after driving my D1 so much. I couldn't see like I can in the disco. I found my self constantly looking around the front roof pillars.

Nice Coffee table hahah! I love your dad's LR3. I absolutely love them. How is the reliability? I've heard mixed things. I think when you buy a rover you either get one that will run forever without a problem or one where everything breaks. Land Rovers reliability would probably sky rocket if they used ford locks and window mechanisms and if they made EAS an option.

My car is just a beater, but eh. Too many people post amazing cars in this thread... there have got to be people without beemers and landrovers and new cars. Mine is a 1991 Mazda 929S. It was actually the nicest variant of the nicest model Mazda made, and the last year before a redesign that really cramped space (though did bring better aesthetics--oh well). Despite having a rotary drive (!), power-everything, heated leather seats, a great moonroof, and even a very advanced radio for its day with a peculiar little digital equalizer that tries to look like a real physical equalizer, there were no cupholders and only a couple of choices for paint colors. How weird is that? Oh, 1991!
