There is a rumor circulating that google fired one of their pixel design teams, the one responsible for the pixel 3xl.

According to the rumor, google leaked the designs of both pixel models in order to gauge consumer opinion regarding the designs accomplished by the two distinct teams.

No idea what will happen though, could be another reboot next year.
If that rumor is true it’s pitiful. They should have someone on their team with good taste who can look at a design and know it’s going to be a laughing stock. It doesn’t take a Jony Ive. Heck, isn’t there a dude in accounting on his coffee break they could have grabbed?

They had to let that guy go. He got caught using excel instead of google sheets.. was a huge todo.

Decisions Decisions. Sell my Pixel 2 now before the 3 comes out, or, keep it so I can do some comparison photography between those two and the Xs Max.

Having fun doing photo walks with the P2 & Xs so far, looking forward to shooting my first Motocross event with both phones to test some fast paced video action.

LOL, good point. May as well enjoy both devices for a bit before sending the other off to a happy new owner.
Most folks who will buy a pixel device know the pixel 3 is coming in a few weeks anyway so you are already late to sell. If this was June/July....then yeah, go for the $$.

It gets worse apparently said design team could have come from the HTC acquisition.

That would be a tall order, google is notoriously into a/b testing, which wouldn’t allow one person to make any decisions.

That’s presuming pixel 2 prices would not fall any further.

I still like the way the Pixel camera “plays with light” and shows details that other cameras don’t. Not even some of the better point and shoot cameras. But so far the Max is beating the Pixel camera in some low light shots and some tricky dynamic range situations. I think Google can regain that particular lost ground easily with a few software tweaks. I’m just glad to have a fully competent iPhone camera again. I was frustrated with how 7’s, 8’s and X’s were blowing out highlights so badly. It actually got worse going from 7 to last year’s models. The thing is, I think the older models could be fixed with some software adjustments.

I don’t think they’ll be able to do those software tweaks to older iPhone, remember that the A12 has trillions of transistors dedicated purely for machine learning and artificial intelligence, which is what they’re using for the camera. So they might be able to up the quality on the current gen iPhones, and possible last years with the A11, but any iPhone older than that is probably out of luck.

What’s impressive is that it took Apple to specifically design a chip with a robust neural engine to do the same type of A.I. for pictures that google was able to accomplish purely in software.

yep....Googles post processing algorithm is unmatched.....

Honestly, I don't mind the larger bezels on the Pixel 3. I currently have an S8 and have had a whole lot of issues with unintentional presses not only from the curved edges but from the smaller bezels as well. When watching YouTube in bed I've had a lot of issues. With the small to nonexistent bezels on new devices, I wonder if that's just going to make things worse with accidental presses? Maybe we need some bezels after all?

Nah, on my essential phone and iPhone x/xs, I get almost no unintentional presses, at least it doesnt happen enough to where it's a problem and I remember it happening.

With my Samsung devices on the other hand, that happens quite a bit. Even though it has gotten better over the years because of design tweaks by Samsung and adjustments by me on how I handle my phone, they still happen more than I would like.

Samsung really needs to either drop these curved displays or at the very least sell a version with a flat display. While they look cool, they're easier to break, harder to get screen protectors for, cases aren't as protective, reduces usability of screen, more prone to phantom touchs, and can distort images. It's the epitome of form over function.

Android has always lacked in the "haptic feedback" department. Would be nice to have a stronger vibration.

Also I am curious about the 3 XL screen size vs the 2 XL. So the Pixel 2 XL we know is 6". And the Pixel 3 XL I read various sizes, it's either 6.7" or 6.3", but that the overall footprint size of the phone itself is near identical to that of the current Pixel 2 XL ?

So...i understand the notch part and ears on either side make up that large 6.7" screen number, but minus the notch, or below it is the display bigger than the 2 XL, or the same ?

And how do notifications work with a notch ? Won't the notch be in the way of reading the full notification ?

The top middle of Android Pie is left completely blank now. Also, notifications begin below the quick toggles when you slide your notification tray down.

The only thing that notch will get in the way of is good design. We'll, and notification icons and status bar info, but not full notifications.

This is how they look like on my essential phone. They basically appear under the notch.

Well when I was thinking “tweaks” I was hoping they could do something about how badly iPhone 8-X blows out highlights. Because the 6s didn’t do that. And the 7 did it to a lesser degree.

For the Pixel 2 and 2XL I was hoping to see some tweaks to get rid of the strong cat pee yellow cast a lot of low light photos have. It’s a white balance adjustment, I presume. But I don’t actually know.

So this time next week we will know it all about the Pixel 3 and 3 XL.
With that in mind then, I know we’ve virtually seen everything the phone has to offer hardware wise through leaks, but is there anything else you think you’d like to see that could go some way to make you excited about the phone again?

I think I’ve very firmly decided I’m sticking with iOS for the foreseeable, unless the Pixel 3 blows away the cameras from Apples offerings this year.

I’m not sure what else is left to reveal that could sweeten the deal for a Pixel 3 other than a competitive price, but IIRC the Pixel 2 was a reasonable price at launch.

I hate notches but the 3 XL will be running the latest and greatest stock Android OS, which is the best in the business, and not the hot garbage outdated Fisher Price iOS. I know that's my own opinion, I think iOS blows chunks.

But, Apple does design and build the best hardware, that's for darn sure.

But having such a large notch I sure hope Google introduces their version of FaceID. I will admit FaceID is a more comfortable and easier way to unlock your phone. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't it keep the display running while looking at it, not having to tap the screen every minute to stop it from turning off ?
