If the video fpt posted a while back (posted in this thread some pages back) is believed to be true, some design team got canned.

I agree, there is no room for a $1000.00 stock Android phone that is slapped together with 3 ways (or is it 4) to activate Google assistant with a decent screen and camera.

OnePlus may end up owning the stock Android game this year.

Pixel 3 349 /399
Pixel 3xl maybe 499 / 549

The old Nexus prices. If Google had the nerve to fire a design team because of a bad design, then they know they jacked up and should just fire sale these things right off the bat.

Agree, hopefully this goes the way of the Essential PH-1 that was $700 and few months later was $499.

It didn't and was way over priced for what it was. And the 5t sold more and was better reviewed, minus the camera.

Alright. And what does the OnePlus give you to warrant a markup over the Pocophone?

I've always called the 2 XL a rip-off.

It's only a rip-off because of QA, though, no specs. If you somehow get a good 2XL, it'd probprobably be worth it to a lot of people .

Expensive gamble, then? ;)

Will the Pixel 3 be too small for someone coming from an iPhone 7 Plus?

I want to get the smaller Pixel 3 this year. I have ruled out the 3XL due to its notch and asymmetrical bezels. Something about that phone just sets off my OCD.

I like the design of the Pixel 3 much better and was wondering if it will feel too small coming from the large screen of the iPhone 7 Plus. Physically the Pixel 3 is closer in size to the smaller iPhone 7, but I'm afraid if it's narrow 18:9 aspect ratio screen will feel too small to get used to.

Thoughts?

I guess it depends if you feel the iPhone X or S9 feel too small (I believe the smaller Pixel will have the same size screen as those 2).

For me, those 2 are the perfect size, small enough to be comfortable but just big enough that watching videos doesn't feel cramped.

This leak is kind of disconcerting. If I'm looking at it right, this company charges an up-front fee followed by 11 payments. That would bring the starting price to around $850 US. I know there is a VAT so it's not completely equivalent, but it still seems that Pixel 3 will be more expensive than Pixel 2.

Since 2017 there is no point in buying a Samsung, Google or Huawei phone on day one.

Just wait 3-4 months for a 20-30% price drop or alternatively a promotion with free Bluetooth headphone or speakers.:D

The same was true for the Pixel 2. In the U.K, it has been 35-50% cheaper than other flagship phones for months.

Don’t pay full price for phone unless it’s an iPhone as Apple never does price drops until phones are replaced by newer models.

It's actually the same situation with iPhones, but only with a new form factor - developers took a little bit of time to optimise their Apps to fit the screen after the X was released in 2017. I'd imagine the Pixel 3, with Gargantuanotch, developers may also take longer than usual to get their Apps right (although, Google Apps should be good to go asap)?...perhaps another reason to wait.

It looks awful, even if you can turn the notch off, it is so large and put that together with that chin you will have large Forehead and Chin.

This notch crap is getting out of hand

DSC06331.jpg

The OnePlus 6 is certainly a better-looking device next to the 3XL, but its notch still looks bad when turned on. When turned off, though, I think I'd actually rather have a notch than no notch because that gives more usable screen space below it. After watching all of the videos of the OnePlus 6 and LG G7 with the notch disabled, I feel like the status bar on my S8 is ugly and a waste of space.

With a disabled notch that is the same size as the chin, it looks proportionate and provides more space for content to be displayed. I just wonder if Google will have a setting to disable the notch for the 3 XL. I've not seen anything regarding such as setting in stock Android Pie.

On the contrary. I am using a Huawei Mate 20 Lite to write this message and can tell you now the notch to me is pointless, it intrudes the display and you fit far less notifications in the notification bar.

It can only show about 2-3 things before it begins having to decide what is most important.

But you can have no notch and even more space by eliminating the chin, moving it to the top. That’s why this design is nonsense. You don’t get more screen space.

But in Pie, isn't in baked in now to only show a max of three icons? So even if using a device that doesn't have a notch you still wouldn't see more than that?

It really is the most hideous notched phone design that I’ve ever seen.
What’s strange, is that the chin looks like it’s about the same depth as what the regular 3’s chin and forehead are, yet they decided to go notch-less on the smaller model.

Why would they think that having a notch on the XL would be a good idea? Or does it go back to the old “ are doing it so we must follow suit so people feel like we are also cool”.
It’s awful.

I have always defended google for a lot of things as I like what they’ve done so far with the Pixel line (OG and Pixel 2) and enjoyed both devices. But I’m glad that this year I want to go for an iPhone as I don’t feel like Goigle actually deserves my money.

The smaller model will no doubt still tempt me, but I am going to try and be strong as the XR is the one I really have my eye on this time.

This is correct. My OG Pixel only showed (I think 4, maximum) notification icons. It was very annoying and a huge step backwards. This nonsense really does need to stop as this will be the same on the smaller Pixel 3 too.

Don’t give people the opportunity of buying a phone without a notch but make the user suffer by having the OS perform the same way as if the phone did have a notch.

I think Android Pie will detect if there is a notch or not. Either way I am sure the likes of Samsung will add their own functions to show more icons. This whole notch fad really needs to end. Most of theae OEMs are claiming display sizes of +6.3inch but the notch is there and you end up with about 6inches of actual usable space and a whole of cramming of ico s at the top. It looks ridiculous.

Some great phones being ruined by this thing. I'm loving this Mate 20 Lite, can't wait to get my hands on the Mate 20 Pro very soon, but this notch is an awful thing.

The code name for the XL 3 should have been "valles marineris"

Meh... Ok I think I'm done bashing this thing now

Anyone know of there will be an option to turn off or 'blacken' the notch on the Pixel 3XL? Seems like when you do that, you can at least somewhat of a symmetrical feel to the top forehead and bottom chin and kind of balances out the front of the phone.

Just to clear this up, I'm not sure how everyone has been working out the price but here goes...

£10 up front + £58 x 12 = £706 for the Pixel 3.

BUT this INCLUDES the phone contract with 60GB data allowance per month. So it's phone plus contract.

The only question is whether this is a 12 month, 18 month or 24 month contract. My bet is 24 month. Therefore:

£10 up front + £58 x 24 = £1402.

For reference, an iPhone Xs 64GB on the same 20GB plan (the Pixel 3 is 60GB for the price of 20GB) goes like this:

£70 up front + £78 x 24 = £1942 (Pixel 3 is £1402)
£70 up front + £78 x 12 = £1006 (Pixel 3 is £706)

So although this may not be exact, it's certainly an indicator that it's substantially cheaper than an iPhone Xs.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

You get it.

& if phone makers were advanced enough in their development, they could pair it with a chin-less design & give their customers a much smaller device with a much bigger screen.

It can only show about 2-3 things before it begins having to decide what is most important.

In portrait mode at least, you're thinking about it the other way around - the true screen area ends just below the notch & what's shown above it is the bonus info that would otherwise intrude in your true screen area.

Most people would rather take a smaller form factor with bigger true screen area in the hand, than a larger form factor with a smaller true screen area. & the reduced status bar icons become less of a big deal in this trade-off for a more ergonomic all-round form factor, which suits a higher number of hand sizes.

Google has missed it completely by retaining a large form factor + huge chin + massive notch.

There's no way the back camera sensor will be the same as last year's, is there?

There is a huge chance it will be. Was the sensor on the 2 really what made the pictures good? Google seems to be going all in with computational photography.

Still...

If it ends up being the same exact sensor, forget it. Google would be hitting too many strikes this year, just getting nearly every decision wrong.

We'll know the real deets soon.
