This thread sure made me feel like a power user at 204 charge cycles since launch on my MBP 14".
Still holds up well and definitely beats all the laptops of people around me. Might consider a battery swap before AC+ runs out by the end of 2024.

Tools meant to be used! Agreed, these M1 laptops are AMAZING. Best laptop I've ever had.

I just use the MPB, during the week it is connected all day with my ASD so it gets loaded constantly. No use of AlDente or something... just using it. No worries about the battery ever.

Not sure why so much people panic about how to treat the battery. Just use is as you need it. Never had any problems with my iPhones or Macbooks.

I plotted a graph with the 7 recent MacBooks we got (the 2015 and 2018 received battery replacement so counted as new). They are of mixed usage, some are docked more than the others so the cycle counts vary. But, it still seems there is a clear trend where in the first 6 month or so the health would drop significantly to around 90%, then gradually slows down towards the 3 year Apple Care+ warranty expiry. The fact that Apple gauge the 80% health as a battery replacement threshold looks pretty smart to me, it is actually very difficult to drop below that except cases of extreme cycling.

Very impressive!
From what you write I assume this is all the Apple reported number, from Battery Health or System Report....not the third party apps like Coconut which use ioreg.
I can't read the text on the date axis. But the chart gives the possible impression that more recent Macs do better than 90% in six months....which is consistent with the last three macs I have owned (M1 MBA x2 and M1 MBP 16") which have all been 99/100 after six months, Apple numbers.

@woolypants. Yes agreed, often more, as I showed in this post earlier in this thread.

As I said there the problem with ioreg, as used by the third party apps is that it goes up as well as down, and Apple won't take any notice of it when it comes to replacement. I assumed that @Chancha was using the Apple numbers because he mentioned the 80% which is the number Apple use as a threshold for considering replacement...their number not ioreg.

.their number not ioreg.

Actually, I think it's not simply that Apple reports +5% on the actual reading.

If the battery strength menu bar display is anything to go by, it's more that it over-represents higher numbers, to give the impression of a slower initial drain and longer at 100% (which, if you read reviews of the MBP, always impresses people—"The new MBPs are so efficient that I didn't even see the battery move from 100% for half an hour of use!").

Once you get down to 80%, the actual figures and what Apple reports start to align more—and then when you're down to 50% they're essentially the same.

Definitely not! I didn't mean to imply that. My plot in the earlier post shows it varying between 0 and 6% different.

I dont believe Apple is just out to falsely impress people...they have a more complex algorithm which avoids premature claims for replacement batteries because ioreg fluctuates.

You might be right...I don't have any relevant experience. But I think Apple will just report "Service Required" below a certain level which is widely reported to be 80%.

It would be interesting to know if anyone has monitored the Apple reported health and Coconut as it approaches this point.

I think that's an interesting idea -- record and compare/contrast the readings over time. I've seen the varied reports from the two battery utilities since new as well, but I never recorded them.

So, I noticed the battery life on my BTO 16" M1 MBP falling off a cliff recently. Owned it since December 2021. Mac Battery App says its at 91% max capacity with only 68 cycles. Coconut Battery says 87.2%. Anyone else think this is abnormal?

Bought my MacBook Pro '14 a year ago. In the first 4 Months it dropped to 93% and stayed there for a while. Coconut reported even lower stats than System Settings. It was docked 95% of the Time.

The difference in the reported capacity has sth todo with the way the Macbook charges and the System calculates the max Capacity. Even at 100% Battery Chargelevel it does not mean, that the Battery is Really at its Full Charge Capacity.
The Peak Charge Capacity is not fully utilized. I can only think, that the operating System defines this at Charging Time, or more likely the Battery Management Controller. In the Months it was fully docked, it can fluctuate Day to Day 300 mAh more or less. (When fully charged for the rare Time it was On the Go)

Last 2 Months I cycled the battery two times a week. Now the reported Results are nearly on Point. And since Apple is Full of Crap, they round the Value up 😜 88.5% vs Mapples reported 89%

If I may ask, how do you get your screen to look like this? I like the way the text looks. Thanks!

It's just the default System Font Regular 11.0. Perhaps its that I also use "Reduce Transparency" and "Increase Contrast" (with the contrast slider only slightly above normal) in my Accessibility Preferences.

Hello, is this normal? I bought it on Feb. 10coresCPU and 1TB model.
No AIDente pro and some other stuff. 90% in batterysafe usage. No keep plugeed, just let it to work from battery while 100% charged.

Is it normal? It's consistent with other users.

Is it reasonable for users to accept this? No.

However, I would try calibrating your battery. Remove the power, let it run down to the point where it turns off, and then leave it overnight turned off. Then charge to 100%, and leave the power in for a few hours after this. Then check Coconut Battery.

Do you seriously drain the battery more than one cycle per day?
90% at 373 cycles seem fine. But you are a really heavily portable user, at this rate I expect the battery capacity to fall down a cliff at around 500 cycles or so.

Quick Update on my battery health. Capacity has been still decreasing even though I charge it up to 80 % and discharge to 20 %. Usually unplugged during the night. That what concerns me is 'high' temp of battery, even when its unplugged. What do you think guys?

13' macs run silently but at costs of battery temp which may have impact on their health. Degradation of cells goes too fast.

Will see. I never keep charged 100% and plugged more than 2 hrs.

Hi,

something is wrong here. My first use was on 16.04.2022. coconutBattery Plus showed 100%. It droppes slowly, but now faster. In the first months it was often connected to my CalDigit TS4 Dock + External Display - for homeoffice. In october i discovered the aldente app and set the limit to load 50% battery. I more often used the Macbook without connection to dock etc.

But 15. to 16.11.2022 dropped from 92% in coconut to 88,7% (Apple shows 95%, 96% on 14.11.2022). I charged the battery from 10% to 100% but it dropped again a bit. (tried the Aldente calibration feature)

I'm concerned about this. Is this problem with the third-party apps?

Luckily I have AC+
