I let F.Lux activate the Dark Theme after sunset and until sunrise (it figures out the correct time depending on your location) .

Out of curiosity I wonder if this could be taken a step further and have the desktop wallpaper change in multiple stages to mimic sunset/sunrise with day - afternoon - sunset - night - morning....!

F.lux is a priceless tool - makes working at the computer so much more pleasant.

Greyscale for a change

here is mine …

It's interesting to see someone prefer greyscale. Thanks.

Can you show how it appears when apps are used in an everyday way?

Your preferred web browser, plus one or two other apps, maybe …

Sure, but I didn't choose grey scale mode in Yosemite, I changed/customized the system icons to be grey scale and 80% translucent with a gradient grey/black textured background- (that is impossible to see in the attachments). which helps tone down the brightness of the menus - but lets colors bleed through when in full stretch screen mode. I also changed the system's font to Lucida.

Here are some shots for you below-

Very smart, restrained use of greyscale etc.

Re: the screenshot below, the icon on the left reminds me of MacTCP. And for the icon on the right I thought first XDarwin, then OroborOSX, then Xerox … but I'm not sure about the latter.

What are their origins?

I would like to see how that actually looks on my MBA and would appreciate you posting the specific settings that you used and where they can be found within System Preferences [i.e. for example, i don't see where you can change the icons as you explain].

Thanks in advance.

Re: the screenshot below, the icon on the left reminds me of MacTCP. And for the icon on the right I thought first XDarwin, then OroborOSX, then Xerox … but I'm not sure about the latter.

What are their origins?

The icon on the left is classic mac *sharedapp* icon, and the one on the right is Onyx's original which I photoshopped.

With the brightness and color factor of Yosemite distracting me, I decided I wanted to tone down the whole background (to make the foreground pop and not be distracted) and remembered how comfortable many of the original mac icons were in use *as in "keep it simple stoopid" * kind of reminder to myself. So I went on a quest to go find classic icons and photoshopped them for contrast, opacity, etc.. the classic folders I combined with label parts of other modern icons in simplistic styles, which I then also photoshopped.

The rest was basically sorting out what matched in a whole as a hybrid icon set.

here is one source:

For changing the system icons I used a combination of tools to get as much of the system changed as I could using the customized "hybrid" classic icons.

Then when not working if I need eye candy, I go to stacks in the dock and click the bomb to launch WallSaver for full motion hyperspace screen desktop..!

(I still have not been able to work in the hyperspace environment...but that's the point :D)

Psychedelic & classic mac seem to match...

A related parody

… some shots for you …

Thanks again. I'm truly impressed with the effort that you put in.

I chose one of them for a Yosemite-inspired parody. I hope that you can find the humour in YoPhotoSemite (it is in a parody/humour topic) – I draw a line then mention your "genuinely lovely Yosemite customisation" (and photograph), so readers should realise what's parody and what's not – but if it concerns you, just say and it'll be gone.

Cheers … counting down to new year's celebrations …
