Shouldn't a front LED Notification light be a standard feature on every smartphone?

I dont see the point.

When I get a notification, I just look at the screen.

That's all I need.

I don't know about you, but I don't stare at my phone's screen all day long.

If I leave the room where my phone is docked on the table for a few minutes, I don't want to have to reach over, undock it, press the power button, then reach over again and redock it. A little blinking LED would tell me at a glance whether or not I have any notifications or missed calls.

It sucks your battery for sure.

If your phone is having battery issues, I'll bet you ten grand it's not because of the tiny LED light. Having the entire screen light up drains a whole lot more power. LEDs are used in many places these days because of their extremely low power draw.

Neither do I, I leave it on my desk and it works great.

When I get a notification it alerts me.

I find a blinking light to just be too distracting.

What happens when you're out of the room for a few minutes and you miss the initial alert?

There'd likely be an option to turn off the notification light if you don't want it. Of course it's distracting- that's the point of it (to tell you there's something you need to look at on your phone).

And the screen turning on or the sound that plays when you get a notification isn't?

You can always turn it off if you don't like a blinking light. Or assign it to certain events or contacts only.

It'll make a sound, some of them repeat, etc.

I haven't had a phone so far that makes a sound loud enough for me to hear when I'm not in my office or room.

While some alerts do repeat, they usually only repeat once or twice before they turn off for good. And not all alerts give you the option for notification sounds to repeat.

Neither are replacements for a blinking LED as they don't tell me if I need to pick up my phone at a glance, regardless if I'm looking at it 1 minute after the initial notification or 1 day after.

It's a feature that is nice to have.. I find if very convenient as I have the notifications color coordinated.

I can tell whether I have an SMS, missed call, email, low battery, full charge, and even app notifications just on the color.

Its not a necessary thing, but I noticed I've replied or called back a lot faster than I did with an iPhone. With the iPhone, it sometimes got too late to reply as I saw the notification hours later.

I know there's people out there who think an LED on their phone is stupid simply because Apple doesn't put it on the iPhone, but really, this simple LED is more useful than anything else that can be added to the iPhone, hardware-wise.

After using my Galaxy Nexus, I thought: "...man I spent so much wasted time checking my phone to see what notifications I have!"

Why the hell doesn't Apple just make that home button light up so people can stop checking their iPhone so often?

I also owned a Galaxy Nexus (last year), and while the notifier light is "nifty", it was never obvious enough, so I never actually changed my phone checking habit.

Yes, it's useful, but only if they make it flash like sirens or something.

On the Galaxy Nexus? It was useless. I had to stare at the phone to see if a light was pulsing. The time took doing so, I ended up checking the phone with the power button anyway.

This would help a lot. I have it on one of my HTC phones. It helps a lot when you're in a meeting or in class and if your phone is on silent.
The only downside is that it doesn't flash for a long duration. After about 2 minutes it stops. If the iPhone 5 has one which does flash for a while, it definitely will be a good feature.

Honestly, I thought Apple would roll out a new hardware feature for notifications, but this was pretty disappointing. I guess they're waiting to push that out...after iPhone 5S...with the iPhone 6.

I have a $5 charger that has a LED indicating light. On my nexus with light flow I can glance across the room and see if my phone wants my attention.

In that one place
I spend a lot of time in a darkroom and love my Z10's notification LED, I have it set a different blink speed and color depending on who or what is contacting me.
While I think LEDs are useful, I can see how some see it distracting.

How's all the "Apple didn't invent it so I hate it but when they add it to iphone it will be the most revolutionary feature ever" people

Yea but that represents options.... Options make peoples heads explode....

LED Notifications Needed.

In all honesty, no LED notification light is the biggest complaint I have about the iPhones... Notification lights are a tremendous help especially for my profession where discrete messages are helpful.
