Shouldn't a front LED Notification light be a standard feature on every smartphone?

Right, but they are not iphones. It's not worthwhile to switch platforms just for those features are they are good to have but not mandatory for me.
Right.....if your locked into the Apple ecosystem.... Then stick with the iPhone and be happy......

Gotta be in it to win it

Yes sir! I am happy with the apple ecosystem. While I think some updates hardware and software would be nice, the pros of being with apple far and away are more than the cons, for me.

Everything in life is a compromise, but now and then you come across an idea that's a no-brainer.

This is one of those. It costs maybe 5c to include an LED in the phone hardware, the software is free since its so trivial, its a wonder why we are even having this discussion!

Its incredibly useful as so many others have pointed out. If you don't like it, it costs you nothing and stays dark. What's the objection??

How incredibly cool would it be if iPads had the glowing Apple symbol that Macs have and could use it as a notification light?

I always loved that idea too. And a pulsing home button/ring around the home button. Going to remain nothing but a beautiful dream forever though :)

If it's added - I'd like to option to have it disabled... It sounds like it will be like a skype-blinking icon, which just 'screams' give me attention, basically distracting me from whatever I was doing. I'd rather not have the notification. If anything is important, they can call again ( or walk over to me at the office, instead of relying on skype ).

It does on my Samsung GS5. Under Settings>Quick Settings>Sounds and Notifications>Application Notifications, choose which app you want to turn it off.

It's a very very useful feature on my android. Red for missed calls, green for messages, yellow for emails..

I think it is a great feature - find it useful every single day.

As others have mentioned you can disable it if you want, or just make it work for selected apps/notifications. It is not a case of being forced to use it for everything or not having it at all.

With the arrival of always-on screens like in the new Galaxy S7 the LED notification light will be less useful though. A small icon popping up on the screen will serve much of the same use.

I miss the little trackball on my Nexus One but started to appreciate it already on the BlackBerry Bold 9000. Both my current smartphones have an LED notification light. I keep it on with only one of them. It isn't a big deal feature like it used to be but it is a nice option to have when it is there.

On the other hand that might not be as noticeable from a little further away compared to a smaller led flashing in different colors.

i had colours for differend notifications. it was good but the only problem was that i didnt ever remember which colour was for which one :D anyway... iphone could have some kind of life showing missed things. it could show something on the screen, powering the screen on for a second or so on every two minutes. it cant be so hard to offer an option to see missed things...

I love my notification light on the S6. And miss it on my iPhone.

What's interesting to discuss, I think, is the idea of "always on" displays. Both LG and Samsung are pushing this new feature, and Moto X and to some extent the Nexus phones have this already, too.

So with "always on" displays showing more information while not requiring much battery drain, will we need a notification light anymore? Probably not.

Currently, the iPhone doesn't have either solution. If you want to see if you've missed anything, you have to turn on the entire screen. Feels archaic. I wonder if the iPhone 7 will change that.

Cannot stress enough how awesome the simple notification light is. I was freaking out that the Nexus 6P didn't have it, but it's disabled by default and can be changed in the settings. Whew!

Apple doesn't want to have a notification light; they want you to buy an Apple watch for your notifications.

That's why it, very unfortunately, won't happen. They're in this to make money, not to make everything the best they can for the customer.

It baffles me that people buy iPhones knowing there is no blinky light and then complain there isn't one...
Many aren't complaining but are just expressing their thoughts about an improvement that they wouldn't mind seeing.

While true on some level, that's more of a recent development as this kind of discussion has been around for a long time before smart watches were really around, an in particular before the Apple Watch.

Apple just doesn't want to have to stick another module behind the glass, or incorporate it into the speaker grille. Maybe they think it isn't the most "elegant" way to receive notifications (but it is very useful). Apple should put an always on display in their iphones. I think that's a good middle ground between elegance and productivity.
