Shouldn't a front LED Notification light be a standard feature on every smartphone?

Nice feature! (Nexus 5)

(it's stupid NOT to want that as it's totally optional and can be switched off)

As an iPhone user I have to say: Yes I'd really like to have one.

There are other things that are more important to me, but if I had the choice iPhone with or without LED Notification I would certainly take the one with a LED.

One thing is device size, so Apple pushing to a bigger phone might actually bring me to Android ironically. ;)

Wasn't there a recent rumor that the Apple logo on the back might be an indicator light in the iPhone 6?

http://www.phonearena.com/news/The-Apple-logo-on-the-iPhone-6-could-be-a-notification-light_id58443

If that's true, I think that's a mistake. It should be the home button that lights up. Having the Apple logo light up sort of makes it weird and conflict with the lock screen notifications that wake the device. Do you put it flat down on the front or flat down on the back? It should be all on the front so that when a notification comes, if you see it, you get to preview it in the lock screen, but if you miss it, you get to still get notified by the light in the home screen whenever you glance at your phone.

I don't like it so if they do add the feature, I sure hope it can be disabled. I have it disabled on my Android phones.

I love how on my LG G2, I can have purple notification for my wife, blue for parents, etc. If I miss the custom sound notification and only see the light, I know from 20 feet away who it was.

I never pay attention to it anymore but it's nice option to have. I just have too many notifications to keep track.

Me either. I guess its nice to have but i also have the app Slidelock that gives me notification banners on my lockscreen so i dont pay attention to my LED light. To be honest i dont even know what colors go with which notification so really its useless.
I have a Nexus 5 that is black so the LED comes in more handy for when it is blended in with dark things like a coach or table and i cant find it right away, lol.

As you can choose colour, blinking frequency, sound, specify contact or application, I really can't believe that someone is bashing this as useless.

Red: missed call (fast=family member, medium=work, slow=anyone else)
Green: sms or whatsapp post (fast=family member, medium=work, slow=anyone else)
Orange: Mail (fast=work, slow=anyone else)
Purple (fast=GPS on, slow=no phone/data signal)
Blue (fast=twitter, slow=ebay alert)
Yellow (fast=traffic alert, slow=silent mode on)
All of these led notifications allow me to avoid turning on the screen every now and then. Just when I need it

Is that using the app Lightflow? If so, i found that app to be a battery drainer. It has been a while since ive used it though.
LOL, who wants to remember all of that anyways. It is nice to have but without an app that were not battery friendly imo, it is limited.

I prefer the scrollable notification banners with number badges on my lockscreen.

I've had this doubt about battery too, but every battery control app I've tried always assigned a minimum drain regarding Lightflow.
Regarding the colours to remember it's just a matter of habit.
my point is that I prefer to avoid to turn on the screen if not necessary.
You can also choose the way phone vibrate in your pocket depending on each notification. So I already know what kind of "urgency" I have to expect from my notifications once I pick up the phone

It's so important.

It retrains you not to pick up your phone unnecessarily unless it's flashing at you for a specific reason.

Yeah it helps prioritise notifications. I can ignore a blue LED because it's probably a group message or a non-urgent email, green for personal messages.

Yes, and included with the option to disable it if someone doesn't want the feature.

Personally find flashing LEDs annoying, luckily I can disable it. Imagine that: Being able to choose whether or not you want a feature! Apple could learn something here ;-)

Gotta be in it to win it
I'm surprised at the number of people [mainly on the iPhone forum, not so much on this dramatically more neutral subforum] saying that it's useless and they don't ever want to see it on the iPhone.
I mean, it's obvious that they're fanboys who'd claim it's revolutionary and totally a reason to upgrade to the S model, but still- I can kinda understand the whole 'I don't want a better camera/LED flash/higher resolution screen/3G/GPS/etc' BS they were all spewing several years ago since it might lead to a price increase, but this is a tiny $0.05 bulb that would only benefit the user (and if you really think that it's distracting, there will likely be a toggle switch in Settings to turn it off), and yet they still say it's useless? Sigh. We'd still be on the original iPhone if Apple listened to them saying 'it's perfect as it is and no changes should ever be made' .

LEDs draw an extremely low amount of power, nowhere near as much as turning on your phone's screen (even if it's only for a few seconds) just to see whether or not you've got a new notification.

Jeez talk about slingin pejorative words like fanboy around. Yeah I think about it from my days of bb ownership. But I can't say it was a deal breaker on IOS. In fact far from it. I would like a removable battery before a notification light.

I really like a notification LED. But if I had it configured to that degree I think I would need to turn on my phone just to look at my cheat sheet to figure out what it meant. :)

You're right of course. But everything in life is a compromise. If I had a phone with a notification light and removable battery I would compromise in other areas.

How do you know? there are flagship phones that have a notification light and removable battery now......
