Nice, Main Coons rule. Def. do a Google search and try to find a nice shelter where you live - exhaust ALL possible shelters before adopting a kitten or something. Kittens are incredible to raise and a lot fun, but they're almost guaranteed to get adopted no matter what. Six months or older shelter cats (and dogs) aren't so fortunate.
Do what's necessary to adopt a six months (preferably a year) or older cat from a shelter if you can.
I am totally into getting older* dogs and while not a cat person in general, I may later this year adopt an older cat if it proves "gets along well with dogs." I got my dog when she was more than 6 years old and just remember, the day you get your dog/cat, is the day they start the best chapter in their lives.
I will, and I agree with adopting. There was a dog that showed up on my dads porch who was pregnant, he felt bad for her so he always left food and water out. She had the puppies, one was very friendly and the other was terrified of people, so I wanted that one. 4 years later he is the most loyalist dog I've ever had in my life. Never left my side even at a dog park while my husky went wild.
Unfortunately, due to our move overseas I had to leave both of them with a very caring family.
