By "Same family of CPUs" do you refer to Intel and AMD as different families, and any processor within the Intel family will be fine if I exchange it?

I lost my Windows box and CD, and I'm planning on upgrading my processor from a Intel Core2Duo to a Core2Duo at 2.8ish Ghz. Right now its at 2.2Ghz.

Have you considered overclocking? Or is the old processor fried because the heatsink broke?

I just finished building her; my first Microsoft OS computer since Windows 98.

Case: LIAN LI PC-P80.
CPU: Intel Core i7 920. OC to 3.2GHz. For now.
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master V8.
DVD Drive: Samsung SH-S223Q. With patched firmware to unlock read speeds.
Fan Controller: Scythe KM02-BK 5.25".
Hard Drive - Boot Disk: 2x Western Digital VelociRaptor in RAID 0.
Hard Drive - Backup and Storage: Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5TB.
Keyboard: Logitech G11.
Monitor: 24" Dell Ultrasharp 2408WFP.
Motherboard: EVGA X58 SLI.
Power Supply: Thermaltake Toughpower W0133RU 1200W. Overkill right now but I want room to expand.
RAID Card: Areca ARC-1210.
RAM: OCZ XMP Ready Series 6GB (3x 2GB).
Video Card: BFG Tech Nvidia GeForce GTX 295.
OS: Windows Vista 64-bit.

The RAID card was defective and I'm still waiting for its replacement to arrive. So right now the dual VelociRaptors are just sitting there. I did test them out before the RAID card stopped working. 200MBs sustained read/write. I know the RAID card I is overkill for a simple 2 drive RAID 0 array, but I'm going to add more HDDs later on and do a RAID 5.

CINEBENCH R10 results…
Rendering (Single CPU): 4702 CB-CPU
Rendering (Multiple CPU): 19134 CB-CPU
Shading (OpenGL Standard): 6497 CB-GFX

PICTURE TIME!!

imgp0589k.jpg

There are three 140mm fans in the front blowing air in and 1 on top sucking air out. The sheet of plywood is there because I didn't want to build the computer on carpet for static electricity purposes.

imgp0601q.jpg

The entire front of the case is vented.

imgp0592.jpg

The empty PCI slot is where the RAID card is supposed to go.

imgp0593e.jpg

The two fan near the bottom suck hot air out of the case. This system runs slightly hotter under load that my MBP does just idling.

LOL

That thing is HUGE. How tall is it? How many HDs and optical drives can it take?

Yeah, it is huge, but it's about 10x faster than your PB, and 10x the size. :p

Big computers are fine if you have a laptop.

Noice rig, dude, I always wanted to use one of those cases.

No, I didn't think about OC'ing.

The processor is perfect, it just as some (iron?) on it from the heatsink, but I can take that off.

After I installed the new heatsink/fan, I restarted my computer, and the clock speed was like 1.6Ghz! I went into the BIOS, and changed (something) to 11x instead of 2x. That made it back into 2.2Ghz, and that was the fastest option I could do. So, I'm guessing its not overclockable?

I do not think my PB is faster than it and I would love a Core i7 computer.

I wonder how it compares to the 2.26 GHz Core 2 Duo that I have.

What is the geekbench score?

I know you don't, sorry about that. Big misunderstanding.

I would guess somewhere in the 8000s. It goes up about 1000 points in Leopard, FYI.

Here is a G4 to MicroATX case conversion I did recently. Eventually I will write a detailed guide but have not felt the initiative yet.

-Pentium Dual Core 2.5Ghz @ 3.0Ghz
-4GB DDR2 800
-2 x 640GB Hard Drives
-ATI Radeon HD3850 512MB
-DVD Dual Layer
-Zip 100MB
-400w 80Plus Certified PSU

Don't worry the case came from a dead Gigabit Ethernet G4. I would not cannabilize one that still works.

Eventually this will also run Mac OS X. Unfortunately the 3850 I bought is not compatible. I have tried many modified kexts. From what I have found some 3850's work while others do not. I am waiting until I am willing to buy a 4870. But Windows works great and this is primarily a gaming rig.:D

$20 AMD 3400+ processor
4 gigs of RAM
Gigabyte MA78GM-S2H
Wireless card
Lightscribe DVD+R
640GB Hard drive

Total - $366

I was planning on upgrading things as I got money to (like WTF, a gaming rig without a video card, or a decent CPU?) but then I found out that all the old school games I play work fine on an integrated ATI 3200HD... so it's my main computer. with a $20 CPU in it. *sob*

Geekbench score is 10,000 using the 64-bit version in Vista

I'll repeat the CINEBENCH R10 results just so all benchmarks are in one post.
Rendering (Single CPU): 4702 CB-CPU
Rendering (Multiple CPU): 19134 CB-CPU
Shading (OpenGL Standard): 6497 CB-GFX

3DMark Vantage benchmark.
CPU score: 45021
Graphics score: 18252

I got my RAID card replacement today! Dual Veliciraptor in RAID 0 read benchmark.

Overall pretty good I'd say.

My machine has seen a lot of growth lately, mostly in the cooling system and now soon a new system altogether(i7 finally)

Old:
First try at watercooling, still bloody expensive. Redid it completely a few months ago
IMG_0009.jpg

IMG_0010.jpg

Recent:
This didn't last long as my motherboard died bought a new one and it needed an RMA, so while I wait for it I am just gonna go i7:)
IMG_2659.jpg

Current:
Just a teaser, I am in love with the red tubing! Getting a new "double helix" sort of res with two twisted acrylic tubes running through it. Think resident evil T-Virus container:). Only $100 each:p
IMG_2743.jpg

Also on the table is sleeving, I am currently done the 24pin motherboard power cable, the 8 pin EPS cable, an 8pin PCI-E cable and 2 fans. Just the motherboard headers, the 6pin PCI-E cable and my pump power cable left to do. Finger pain!

That computer is SICK!!!

Specs? I'd been thinking of trying WC when I get some more money. I also may go i7 if I can get a job this summer.

Is that a Twelve Hundred you're using?

iMpathetic, What do you do on your computer that requires you to have such expensive equipment at 14 (15?) years of age?
I'm 15, and I couldn't justify a need for something more than a dual-core, as much as I want it!

I also, wanted dual-monitors, but my parents bought me a desk that only has room for one monitor, and I'm doubtful that my current monitor (22") will fit good.

My secret: I don't justify sh*t. If I want it, I buy it. Computing wouldn't be as exciting on an iBook 24/7.

As long as I don't owe anybody anything, and everything I buy I earned, I see no problem with very expensive equipment.

It isn't crack either.

Yeah, but would you REALLY notice the difference between a i7 or a Quad-Core?
Also with the graphics card- Would you really notice the difference between a 1GB Graphics card, or a 512mb one? Not with everyday computing.

Doesn't matter to me, I buy the best I can afford.

I also like to buy used, which cuts down on costs.

I will be able to score some decent PPD for folding at home once my i7 rig is assembled. And now, there really isn't a real world tangible difference but this is a luxury item, it isn't rationalized or justified. I don't NEED my cooling system, I put it together because it's fun and I love the way it looks. Same for i7, it will be fun to try something new and break new ground, I've never OCed anything outside the Core family.
