The Leica M8 is about as amazing as DSLRs come.

Yes. It's a DIGITAL SLR. Their build quality is top notch and their lens system blows anything Nikon or Canon could ever produce out of the water.

The Leica M8 is like the purchase a photographer makes before they buy their new Hasselblad Medium Format.

Leica keeps their cameras in a "vintage" look and I love it.

Just do a little research on Leica.

thank you for that info, I went to the leica US website bt they didnt have any prices, what would one of those M8's new run? cuz I know the Hasselblad digital Medium formats run up to like 30k

So a rangefinder is like those disposable cameras, or a lomography camera?

Learn something new every day!
Actually, what makes rangefinders so special is the way you focus them.
On an SLR, you can have a split-prism viewfinder that shows you two little versions of your picture, and when you move the focussing ring so far that the split pictures become one, that's when you know you have a properly focussed picture.
Since in SLRs, this all goes through the lens and mirror and everything, it's kinda hard to transport it to portable cameras. So that's what rangefinders do; they have a separate viewfinder, but one that lets you focus your picture in the way I just described.

The other thing that makes rangefinders better than other compacts are their exchangable lenses. The ones Leica makes are very, very good.

That looks to be the same body as the Panasonic LX-3. I assume the Leica shares the F/2.0 lens as the Panasonic?

It's the same camera, but with Leica's own digital image processing. Of course, that means dick all.

It's just a Panny with a Leica-sized price tag.

The M8 is a different story, because it's a digital range-finder, and there aren't exactly a lot of those on the market today. If you want one, you need to get an M8 or the new M8.2 (or is it called the M8.1?).

can you type as fast as on the pearl? I hated the pearl kb but learned to live with it. I am no pretty close to the speed of a stnd bb but it took many months

yeahm i have a leica m6. it's not for everyone (takes a lot of determination and you have to teach yourself how to expose in half-stops). The point and shoots and SLRs made by leica are okay, the rangefinders are whereit's really at
