WOW!

What are the specs of everything?

And how are you liking that new Alienware laptop?

15" i7 MBP | 8GB RAM
15" 2.66GHz MBP | 4GB RAM | 500GB HDD
iPad 64GB
Alienware M11X | SU7300 1.3GHz C2D | 4GB RAM | Nvidia 335GT | 500GB RAM
Gaming Rig: i7 Quad Core 3.2GHz | 8GB RAM | ATI Radeon 5870 HD | 2 x 1TB RAID
27" & 24" Dell monitors
Misc: Roku, PSP Go, iPhone 3GS, Droid, Logitech MX Performance Mouse, Razer Orochi Mouse, Apple Magic Mouse

Regarding the Alienware laptop... I love it! It runs all the latest games well and it's small enough to serve as a ultra portable.

College apartment room, pretty messy:

IMG_0159.jpg

The "stacked" desktops are

  • Power Mac G5 (bottom)
  • Dual 1.8GHz Processors
  • 3GB RAM
  • 200GB HD Main
  • 750GB HD for Media
  • OS X Leopard

  • Hackintosh G5 (top)
  • Power Mac G5 Modded Case
  • 2.93GHz Core2Duo
  • 4GB RAM
  • 250GB HD
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 250
  • OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2

Then I have my September 2009 unibody 17" MacBook Pro that I use for classes and Windows stuff when needed, and my work 1st gen MacBook Air.

Note: My MBP keyboard isn't disgustingly dirty, it has a Moshi keyboard cover on it that is worn from use so it looks dirty. If I take that off it reveals a keyboard that is in day-1 condition. Same goes for the trackpad/wrist area, covered by a Moshi palm-guard. I am very picky about keeping my Apple stuff clean, because I like to flip it in a year or so and selling a 100% perfect condition computer is always easy.

Good thing you don't live in Cali (Earthquakes)!

Which iPhone case is that?

It is a Griffin case, but I do NOT recommend it. I had it on my 3G and it scratched the heck out of it! I am only temporarily using it until my Incipio Feather gets here tomorrow.

Good thing you don't live in Cali (Earthquakes)!

Yeah, if that thing falls I'm sure it will snap a few internal components. I cable-tied them together so the top one doesn't slide left or right and fall off, but now if one tips they will both fall. Thank god there are no earthquakes in Northern Minnesota.

I'd be paranoid having a desktops one on top of the other... but I suppose it's heavy enough to be stable.

uberamd, how did you go about using the G5 case for a hackintosh? I am considering doing just what you did. Can you post additional photos?

love, love, LOVE your setup. (first off, sorry for all the questions) what kind of music production do you do? is there a reason you have the midi controller AND a keyboard? do you use the near-field reference monitors for all your computer browsing (iTunes, YouTube, etc.) and are they on all the time? where's your 13" uMBP in this picture? i also see your dSLR...how is that monitor for color accuracy...i'm assuming it's a Dell of some sort.

:D

oi, sorry for not answering; didn't see your comment

I do (mainly) house music production (mostly progressive house) and stuff, besides the occasional film score-type stuff. I have both a midi keyboard and a keyboard because I had the midi keyboard first and was then given the other keyboard by my sister (I like some of the sounds that it offers, so I kept it). The near-field reference monitors are used for everything (including production) besides mastering (unless it's late, or I'm testing bass resonance) as I do all mastering on headphones. The 13" uMBP in my sig is where it's always at now... on my bed, and not in the "studio" unless I'm doing something on it that requires wired ethernet.

As for the photo stuff, I had some money a few years ago (4 or so) and wanted a nice camera, so I bought one. I still haven't really learned how to use it that well. And you're right, the monitor is a Dell (2208WFP).

Sorry for all of the side comments... Glad you enjoy my setup. :D

I had no idea four computers could fit on such a small desk  I have >4000 square inches of desk space and I'm still finding it difficult to fit three laptops and two monitors. I even had to shove the desktop under the desk.

Also, you knew this was coming... WHY THE #%@& DID YOU RUIN THAT PERFECTLY GOOD MACBOOK AIR?!?!! :(:mad:

uberamd, how did you go about using the G5 case for a hackintosh? I am considering doing just what you did. Can you post additional photos?

It was a pain in the butt in some respects, but it was just something I wanted to try since I had an extra G5 case. I have some pictures uploaded of it:

Back: http://steve.blogme.us/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/IMG_0170.jpg
Functional LED: http://steve.blogme.us/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/IMG_0166.jpg
Front with CPU Fan Led Showing: http://steve.blogme.us/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/IMG_0164.jpg
Inside 1: http://steve.blogme.us/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/IMG_0162.jpg
Inside 2: http://steve.blogme.us/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/IMG_0161.jpg
Inside 3: http://steve.blogme.us/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/IMG_0160.jpg

Basically the procedure was gutting the G5, wiring up the front panel to talk to the PC power LED, wiring up the front panel to work with the power button, buying a motherboard tray, cutting the back of the G5 case to fit the motherboard tray, and installing the components. It wasn't what I would call easy, but it was a cool project. It runs well and stays cool enough with just the CPU fan.

If you want better pictures (high quality ones) or more info, feel free to let me know.

Really dig this setup man :D

Thanks :)

What do you do with so many computers, plus the ipad?

The G5 is a media server (has all my movies, etc), and it talks to my XBox and PS3 and streams content to them. The top desktop is where I do programming and other work. My 17" MBP is used for school work, in all of my classes, when I travel, etc. My 13" MacBook Air is used at work.

:(:mad:

The Yoshi on the Air is just a vinyl sticker, it can easily be removed. I got it because my MacBook Air got dropped and dented and I thought it would cover the dent, but clearly I was wrong. The poor Air has been through hell: terrible ghosting issue with the screen, cat snapped the hinges on the display, bluetooth came unplugged (I blame the service guy who replaced the screen though), and then it was dropped. None of these issues were by me mind you.
