not exactly ignorance... i was on dells for all they years that i was in the evil pc world and i went through sooo many. I also had a dell mp3 player and it started to split apart with in 3 months.
I can't say much for the Dell DJ (never owned one), but Dell's professional workstations are really nice machines to work on. That is, if you can get over your bias toward Windows.

If you're buying low-end $399 PCs, expecting world-class build and performance, I can easily see why you're disappointed. It's no different than people around here wanting their Mac mini to run HD video at full res or host a 4-way video conference on iChat.

I had a 4550, 4600, and XPS

Ignorance is bliss, eh?
1 Dell PC- $1500

1 year antivirus subscription- $30

MS Office (because Dells only come with Corel)- $149

an optical mouse (because who wants to use a stupid ball mouse?)- $30

Dell's crappy hardware failing after a month- $200

Windows XP and all the fun that comes with it- $400 to repair the holes in the wall and the broken furniture that you battered in your fit of frustration

opening the box of a brand new Mac, and realizing that all is well in the land of the Tiger- priceless

Seriously though, I have worked with tons and tons of Dells- various models in various places, and they all have endless problems. I can tell you that, of all the major brands, Dell is by far the lowest quality and the most problem stricken. Every time I use a Dell (or any PC for that matter), I am reminded why I use only Apple products at home. It is the closest thing to a perfect unity between hardware and an OS that you will find anywhere.

All of this will cease to be true, of course, once MS releases Longhorn and changes the world.

As have I, but my experience has been almost completely opposite yours.

Interesting.

Apple already released it for them. ;)

I think we're a bit off-topic here, but I will echo what ChrisBrightwell said... I used and owned several Dell machines for a number of years, and they were always rock solid for me. I think I had maybe ONE video card fail, and that wasn't really Dell's fault (and, to their credit, they replaced it almost immediately).

Now, Gateway machines are, in my experience, crap. Sadly, my Dad bought one (he didn't consult with me at ALL)... but fortunately he hasn't had any problems with it.

Oh please, dear god. This is an awesome thread, please don't mess it up with a Apple vs. Dell flamewar. It's not a flamewar yet, but it's on the way to one. So please stop, and start posting your setups again!

Mine: Sorry for the poor picture quality, I don't have a digital camera, so I used my camcorder.

What's in it: Mac mini, Logitech MX1000 mouse, Dell 19" 1901FP, Apple USB Keyboard, and on the lower right you can barely see my self-built gaming PC.

I went into John Lewis (UK department store) this morning looking for a copy of Tiger because it's the only place in Norwich that I know sells a decent amount of Mac stuff.

Unfortunately they were sold out of Tiger but instead I left with one of those new Microsoft optical mice by S+ARCK and an iCurve. :)

Here's my current setup now:

I was also preaching Mac to the guy in front of me in the queue (also looking for Tiger). I didn't need to because he fell in love with Macs too after he bought his iMac. He needs Tiger more than me though, he's still on 10.1.5.

Are you going to get an external keyboard?? I can't imagine typing on it while the computer is on the iCurve is comfortable.

It's more comfortable than I would have thought acually. Feels quite natural-ish. That said, I am going to get an external keyboard ASAP. But the ones in John Lewis were rather overpriced. I'm going to a computer fair on Saturday. See if I can pick one up there. :)

Raven VII: Your setup is wonderful, but your computerdesk seems to be a little bit to small.
hmmm, it is small, but he doesnt really need a load of space for a mini and monitor.

Absolutely, and it makes some CD-R coasters from time to time in iTunes.

Speaking of, does anyone know a good (cheap?) DVD burner? I was stupid buying the combo and not the superdrive. Am I stuck for life? Do I have to give $100 to fix my mistake? :(

At last I have decided to post a pic of my setup. This is the old version (when life was simpler) as the 'new' is not good... I have bits of kit all over the study now getting ready for some eBaying.

Old Mac Setup

I am pleased to say that the PC laptop has now been given away to some sucker... oops donated to charity.

The new 'new' version will hopefully include a new display so I can retire the old style cinema display.
