First time poster here. My XDR display all of a sudden stopped working with my Mac Pro when I woke up a few nights ago, after what I assume was a firmware update to the XDR and/or an update to the Mac Pro that occurred the prior night.

Here‘s my setup: 2019 Mac Pro, 5700X graphics card, nano-textured XDR, with 25m Corning thunderbolt 3 usb-c cable connecting the Mac Pro in my server closet to my XDR on my home office desk. Up until a few days ago, this setup had been working perfectly for me for the prior six months (including after I’d upgraded to Big Sur).

But as of a few days ago, I just get a blank black screen on the XDR when I turn the Mac Pro on and the XDR. Nothing happens at all on the XDR when the Mac Pro is turned on.

I thought maybe something had happened to the Corning cable, so I tested it by plugging the same cable into my MBP instead of my Mac Pro, and the XDR worked perfectly when connected to the MBP using the same Corning 25m cable.

Then I moved my Mac Pro next to the XDR and connected it to the XDR using the short 2m Apple thunderbolt 3 cable that came with the XDR, and the XDR worked perfectly with this cable connected to the Mac Pro.

So I think whatever update was installed on my XDR and/or Mac Pro a few nights ago has caused my XDR to stop working with my Mac Pro when they’re connected via the 25m Corning cable (that I spent like $600 on).

Any ideas on why this is happening and how I can fix it so I can continue using the Corning cable with my XDR/Mac Pro setup? Any assistance anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated!

So my ProDisplay XDR arrived :)

The shipping box arrived with a hole pierced through it and that hole ended up on the product box :( However, physically the screen appears to be protected. When I first plugged in the monitor, however, there was a ~ 2-inch x 2-inch square on the middle left side of the monitor that displayed a bunch of red, green, and blue squiggly lines (could this be a couple local dimming zones?)... I quickly unplugged the monitor and plugged it back in... everything has been fine since then. I'm hoping it was just a fluke..... Anyone else experience this?
No, just keep an eye out. Slightly concerning

I use Magnet to help manage the chaos.

Over the years I haven't [consciously] hit that 1000px limitation with Paw. Love this tool though!
Hm. I’ll check it out. I hadn’t found the limitation w Paw either until the xdr.

Reason is that I most often use the monitor in 3 1000px wide columned windows.

Global hot keys send the windows into left, middle or right columns at various heights.

This allows an IDE center, browsers, ticket tracking or other tools on sides. I also have full left half, full right and some different versions of wide in the middle for files with longer lines

Its a minor quirk w Paw, but the first app I’ve seen unable to make fit into one of the columns without that little truck.

Mine had this same hole and impact on the product box. See my unboxing early in this thread.

It sounds weird. If it goes away and never comes back I would shrug and let it go. If you see it again, I’d contact the company.

When I first got it, I wanted it to be perfect and it just wasn’t. (I had the residue covered screen issue someone else has had itt too)

But after that the monitor has really been amazing. Even when I’ve had some slow sleep wake stuff I wouldn’t go back to anything else.

M1 Air using XDR here. Excellent experience. I also use a work 16" i9 with it, but it doesn't;t feel as snappy - I actually feel the M1 is quicker for my use case.

I have the 16GB/8C version and it's flawless for me doing non-creative work. I don't mess with the scaling. It replaced a 16" i9 and does everything better. I'm so smitten with this thing, I will absolutely upgrade if they redesign the MBA later this year.

man how did u guys justify the XDR for non-creative work? Is it just the overall "art" piece vibe it gives off? Is that enough to keep it? I mean it is amazing....like u can just stand around it and stare at it...pretty amazing piece of engineering.

There's a whole thread in here about the XDR for development purposes if you're curious. I think the gist of it is that if you're staring at text for 10 hours a day, and want something bigger than the LG 27", it's the only option that's "retina." And most people have some overlap with creative hobbies, so when you do use Lightroom (or whatever) it's a real treat. I don't mind that it looks nice, but that wasn't really part of the calculus. I would have preferred the same size/resolution panel without the creative extras for cheaper.

I think if you're being objective about this, tho, it's not justifiable vs multiple 27" 5K displays at 1/4 of the price each. There are some edge cases which involve the user being insanely picky, but overall it doesn't make sense. If you want it because it's shiny and sexy, just admit it to yourself and move on.

I think that's what I as getting at...shiny and sexy is fine...no different than some dude buying a Rolex vs a Casio when that is the decider. I mean it makes sense if u stare at it for 10 hours a day....arguably something you'd spend what 80% of your week in front of? Does that not justify a premium product?

The premium aspects of it over a standard 27" 5K are the size, industrial design and HDR specs. The industrial design is "looks" and the HDR specs are irrelevant for programming.

The size is certainly a consideration. But if you are being intellectually honest, multiple 27" monitors get you much more space at much less of a price.

I don't have a problem with people buying a rolex vs casio in terms of these monitors and I already said that. I simply explained the specs from a programming / work productivity perspective because some people don't care about the fancy stuff and actually just care about whether or not it will make them more productive. What do you think is "going over my head" here?

New XDR owner here. Here are my photos with the Ergotron LX Vesa Stand. Just sharing in case anyone is looking to get a Vesa stand as well.

As a First impression: I had an iMac Pro before. The screen was impressive with that. The XDR is like that, but bigger. It's so big that It'll take some time to get used to it. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with it.

How do I get the presets dropdown menu in display settings? The dropdown is missing.
What is the XDR connected to? How is it connected?
The XDR needs to appear as a USB device to be able to control it. Does brightness control work?

Thank you for getting back to me! Brightness control works and it's plugged directly to my MacBook Pro. This is what I get.

Which MacBook Pro are you plugged into, and what is your XDR firmware version?
Yes, maybe it's a firmware problem?
Here's a support document about presets:

You guys going to be pist if Apple puts out a miniLED XDR here with a year or two after purchasing your XDR?

Not at all. Technology moves forward. I work with my XDR. If in a year or two something better comes along I’ll be happy and get that. Technology is a tool we use to accomplish something. It constantly improves and that is what makes it great.
