120hz had not spun out across so many Apple devices when XDR was released.

Still, some people did complain the monitor was not 120hz back then, so can see why this would be a bigger question now that MacOs contains animations at that speed.
Currently, the XDR does 6K60 using HBR2 with DSC @ 12bpp or dual HBR3 with 30bpp.
6K120 would require HBR3 with DSC @ 8bpp or dual HBR2 with DSC @ 12bpp so I guess it could have been possible but it would not be obtainable for people with GPUs that don't support DSC unless Apple allowed 4:2:0 @ 8bpc but the quality would suffer and there'd be no HDR.

Is it correct that there are no Apple designed, or Apple partner designed external displays that can show MacOs in 120hz?
They're all 60Hz (ignoring CRTs).

Is it possible to extend MacOS Monterey to a newer iPad Pro and see 120 on it?
120Hz wireless? I don't think the quality would be good.

What pc-oriented display is the best 120hz used in combo with a MBP M1 Max?
I guess any display that supports Free Sync? Maybe GSYNC? Or maybe not
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/variable-refresh-rate-freesync-gsync-flicker.2320463/
If there's a problem with variable refresh rate then you will still have the option of choosing a fixed refresh rate.

I think the way to interpret this is beyond possible lack of customer market segment expectations for 120hz, there were technology limitations. And providing HDR 120 would have added graphics hardware dependencies that narrowed the segment even further.

I’ve been using it attached via lightning, I didn’t even try pure wifi. Perhaps via lightning only?

27" iMac Retina display vs XDR (side-by-side comparison)?

I've recently hooked up a brand new XDR display to a 27" 2020 iMac (AMD Radeon Pro 5500 XT 8 GB) via included Thunderbolt cable. Comparing the two side by side, it seems that the aged iMac display is much brighter, and, much more colorful than the out-of-the-box XDR - quite frankly the iMac display looks better for day to day use ... What gives? Current Display Prefs of the XDR are set to Pro Display XDR (P3-1600 nits) at full brightness (slide) whereas the iMac Retina Display is Default for Display, brightness maxed, True Tone checked (on).

What is the name/model of the power cord used for Pro Display XDR? I need a new one but have problems finding one. Thanks a lot!

lightning is USB 5 Gbps so I guess it would be better than wifi but still, it must be compressed video.
https://www.mouser.ca/applications/broadcast-usb-video/
That web page says 2.5 Gbps for 1080p120 but it's using 10 bpp instead of 10 bpc for the calculation. With DSC you can do 8bpp or 12bpp. I'm not sure about 10bpp. I think the DSC spec says the bpp is a number that is 8 (6 for 4:2:0) or greater and can have a 4 bit fractional part.
Anyway I don't think Apple uses DSC for the iPad. They would use a normal video compressor which can compress video much more than DSC can because it uses info from previous frames.

If I could get this deal I would buy it in a heartbeat. On eBay the display goes for $4k-$4.6k used, and you’re still looking at having to buy a dock (which isn’t really available on eBay recently).
Thank you all for the advice - I am gonna buy the monitor + stand this Friday, replacing my 4K LG. That should be quite an improvement :)

I checked both the invoice and serial number with Apple and they are legit

Cool. Please share your first, and possibly 1-month, 6-month impressions.

Many people are stuck choosing between the LG monitors and the XDR.

I met the guy today, he is a respected professional that used the monitor in one of his studios for a few months.

We agreed a final price of 3.2k, when we opened the box I noticed a couple of tiny scratches (the ones that come up when you use the wrong cleaning cloth).

We negotiated and I ended up paying 2k incl. the stand. Deal of the year.

Given it is still under warranty (I checked with Apple), I will also see if they can replace the glass, even if those scratches are very small and not noticeable at all.

Will test the monitor in the next few weeks.

Thanks all for the advices

He dropped the price 1.2K for a couple of barely-noticeable scratches? Must have been either desperate to sell (in which case I'd be wondering why) or have money to burn, surely?

I have been very lucky indeed. He has many employees and I believe he is considering to downside his studio, so just wanted to liquidate what he doesn't need anymore

I have been using the monitor for just 1 day, so everything is clearly too preliminary, but it looks stunning.

While I was in love with my LG 4k, the colours here seem much more "natural", less shiny. Although if I am not wrong LG manufactures the display.

I am using it with a Macbook Pro 13" M1 and did not experience any slowdown / issue. It just runs perfectly.

Building quality is one the most impressive features, the aluminium frame is very robust and design is simply amazing, especially the rear.

I am far away from being a pro, but the first reaction is incredibly positive.

Hehe :). I noticed it because I was cleaning my screen with the apple cloth. If you look at this picture you can see a distinct light to dark from the bezel inward. It goes all around the display. I’ve opened a ticket with Apple support and will probably need to take it in. In your pictures it almost seems like you have something similar..

Thanks for taking the time to respond! I’ll let you know what Apple says. I guess I could go look at an iMac with nano and see if there is something similar.

Edit: I got this display earlier this year. So its still under warranty and applecare so I’m not too worried.
I had a problem similar to this with my XDR. It manifested as a yellow band, most visible on full white or full blue screens. I took it into to my local Apple store and they opened a “repair” ticket, and I took it back home. Ultimately, Apple provided a brand new display for me, that I just picked up today at the store. The new display has no such “yellow band” issue. For my troubles/hassle, I now have a spare cleaning cloth, power cord, and braided Thunderbolt cable :) Interestingly, although my replacement was new/retail, the warranty showing on the Apple Support site shows I have 90 days of warranty left on this serial number, just like a normal 90 day replacement warranty.

Mine died today!

Screen went all blue, then black and didn't come back. o_O
That's no good. Was it under any kind of sustained load or special circumstances?

Presuming you already reached out, what is the feedback from support so far?

Not sure if there was anything going on at the time.

Yeah, brought into to an Apple Store, and supposedly should have it or a replacement by tomorrow. We'll see.

Please post any follow-ups. This is the first report of a failure of this type I’ve seen. How long had the monitor been in service? Was it under apple care when you brought it in?

My brand new Pro XDR Display has a giant grey/brown splotch on the display. Awaiting a callback from Apple Support. I’m never very optimistic about getting support over the phone. Always end up not being helped, or the replacement is a refurbished item. But taking a monitor like this into the store seems like such a hassle..

Did the shipping box have damage?

It almost looks like it took an impact.
