I just ordered a brand new Pro XDR display from amazon its going to ship to Miami then to my country should I be scared? because I'm lol

Yay! I've finally joined the XDR club. It seems I was lucky and have an almost perfect item.

(Almost because there is a single dot on the screen that looks like contamination in the front glass, but only visible when looking from below the screen upwards so not a problem in daily use).

My brand new Pro XDR Display has a giant grey/brown splotch on the display. Awaiting a callback from Apple Support. I’m never very optimistic about getting support over the phone. Always end up not being helped, or the replacement is a refurbished item. But taking a monitor like this into the store seems like such a hassle.. OK. So now this is odd... that brown/grey splotch has been visible since I first got the Pro XDR Display over a month ago. After posting here, talking with Apple Support, and making an appointment to take it in to the Apple Store this coming Friday... it's magically gone.

It's disappeared. And I'm not sure what could have fixed it. I did install the OS update the other day, and maybe that did it? But that really doesn't make any sense. Anyone experience something like this? I'm a bit worried it might come back once I'm outside of the return window (where options are better for replacement).

Sounds like a pressure on the screen if nothing else.

I wonder if it's adhesive on the panel that took awhile to dry out. You might want to try restarting once in a while to see if it's software-related.

I haven't experienced it on mine and it's been a year just to put into perspective.

Cool. Please share your first, and possibly 1-month, 6-month impressions.

Many people are stuck choosing between the LG monitors and the XDR.

Rob, I’ve been on an XDR + 2x LG 5Ks for more than a year. Happy to share my experience if there are any particular questions.

Any dock you can recommend? I don't care about ethernet I just want to connect my Pro Display XDR, iPhone, AirPods max with a single cable to my M1 Max

Apple‘s return windows on pro devices can be flexible. Even on non-pro Apple products there’s flexibility if the context is there.

In this case, I would get on the phone with support explain what happened ensure that it’s been noted on your account. If necessary send an email that describes your conversation / what is happening to them.

Then if there’s any problems and you want to return because the splotch reappears and it’s not been very long they should handle it for you.

Your best bet is always in person at the Apple store. Or having a conversation with a manager at an Apple Store. Just tell them your goals, and ask what they recommend, ie return it regardless of the splotch going away or “see what happens” and they’ll replace it if it reappears.

As long as your actions are rational and the evidence is well understood they want you to have an amazing product experience and in my experience will take care of any problems that may crop up.

For your M1 Max, I would strictly stick with Thunderbolt 4 docks. Avoid any Thunderbolt 3 docks. I haven’t used one because I haven’t gotten my M1 Max unit yet, but will likely get an Anker 777 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B...85-20&linkId=81452b68cf2aad11eb89422eb1438c35
Yeah that is what I thought and that one was my first option but take a look at the bad reviews also read on some thread about people having issues with it. Then I was looking into the Sonnet one which is probably one of the few (if not the only one) that claims it can handle M1 Pro/Max + Pro Display XDR without issues https://www.sonnettech.com/product/echo11-thunderbolt4-dock/overview.html then the other option I see is the OWC TB4

Yes, Thunderbolt 4 docks are nice, just remember that an M1 Mac will use USB tunnelling for USB devices connected to a Thunderbolt 4 dock (bypassing the USB controller in the dock) which has slightly less performance than the USB controller in a Thunderbolt 3 dock.

Does anyone use multiple machines with a single XDR Pro Display?

I am going to have another mac I'd like to switch between the output of my BlackMagic eGPU / Mac Mini and a MBP.

Curious if there are TB3 KVMs or a USB4 KVM switch that have been validated to work.

I finally got my Pro Display XDR! No issues at all so far.
Well the only thing is I thought I wasn't going to notice the 60hz difference but its just some times I'm sure I will get use to it.
Your setup looks gorgeous!!

Do you mind sharing that wallpaper? Also, I need a new chair, that one is more than $300? If it’s cheaper than that, what model is it? Thank you

I'm after the exact same thing and haven't found anything so far.

How are you handling switching right now?

This is becoming an even more important question now that Universal Control will exist soon.

I got a support call lined up for tomorrow morning, I'm going to ask what their recommended way to handle this is.

There are no USB4 or TB3 KVMs. It would need to be able to switch 20 Gbps signals.

There did exist Thunderbolt 2 KVMs but I don't know if any are available. They won't work for 6K from BlackMagic eGPU or other GPUs that don't support DSC. the Sonnet eGPU Breakaway Puck RX 5500XT/5700 support DSC so they could work with a Thunderbolt 2 connection but in that case you might as well use a DisplayPort KVM (except Thunderbolt 2 KVM would allow USB 3.0 speed from the XDR USB ports).

I think it would be possible for Apple or someone to create a kind of Thunderbolt Target Display Mode that would allow you to switch a Thunderbolt connected display between multiple Macs that are connected together using Thunderbolt. Basically the host Mac (the one that controls the XDR) would allow a cross-domain tunnelled DisplayPort path from another Mac to the XDR (two DisplayPort paths in the case of Macs that don't support DSC which might be tricky since those paths would use up 39 Gbps - currently Apple doesn't allow such paths except when there is nothing between the Mac and the XDR).

I don't think Universal Control is going to be much better than screen sharing for using the XDR with other Macs. Therefore the only thing you can do for now is keep disconnecting and reconnecting the Thunderbolt cable.

@SamPotts came out of the woodwork with the exact same issue. I know the XDR is already a niche pro device, but this goal of using it for more than one machine doesn't seem that outlandish.

That said, I either need to pick up a second XDR Pro Display for this gig (which is not outside the realm of possibility!) or make this easier than plugging and unplugging into the back of the XDR (Which would cause unnecessary wear and tear on the display)

I have gotten feedback to consider using a TB dock to allow switching the cables easier. I wanted to see if I have this recommendation correct:

Using either the Anker 777 (discussed above) or CalDigit TS4 (discussed here) TB4 docks
(I'll probably replace the mini+BM eGPU with an M1+ machine eventually):

Face the dock backwards on the desk so the TB4 ports are facing me.

Keep the ends of the cables for the two systems near this:

- TB3 Output Blackmagic eGPU (mini goes into this and out to XDR currently)
- TB3 Cable connected to MBP in clamshell

Keep the XDR plugged into one of the other TB4 ports and just plug in one of the above at a time.

--> Monitor just comes up, restoring the desktop / spaces of the machine.

But you have GPUs that don't support DSC. To get 6K60, they cannot have a Thunderbolt dock between the Mac and the XDR otherwise they would be limited to 4K60 or maybe 5K60.

Okay, the 2018 mini / rx 580 are ripe for replacement. I’m hoping for gpu parity on an Apple Silicon model coming soon. Presuming that gets replaced, this setup would “work?”

Apple Silicon should support DSC so it should work. I don't know if it will work.
