I'm still on the fence regarding the XDR mainly due to its sticker price but if I did pull the trigger can I confirm the black magic Vega 56 egpu and 6'1 Mac Pro can drive it at the full 6k resolution?

What year is that? Is it 2013?

If so, the officially supported machines listed for XDR don’t appear to include that model. Older compatibility via Blackmagic requires TB3.

I’d be curious to hear if it worked anyway. A lot of people seem to use XDR in unsupported ways.

Fwiw, I used to drive it from a maxed out 2018 Mac mini and the lesser blackmagic and it was great.

Thanks, yes would love to know for sure as it will need a lot of shuffling equipment and room locations to fit the XDR into my tech stack. So I'd rather have the confidence before hand.

I’ve been going back and forth between choosing two Studio Displays or a Pro Display XDR for a long time. I’ll pull the trigger probably tonight. Leaning against the Pro Display a lot. I already had a 32” AOC and the screen was immersive because the height is so great. I am very sure I will love the Pro Display. I have a MacBook Pro M2 Max and it has an amazing screen. I want the same for my Mac Studio.

I think the XDR is the way to go if you love the MacBook Pro screen. I was in the same boat and finally pulled the trigger a few weeks ago. It really is like having a 32 inch version of the MacBook Pro screen, which is exactly what I wanted :)

Similar boat. I toyed briefly with doing 2 studio displays but I've always been in the camp that prefers one larger display. Always kind of drives me nuts looking at other people's dual monitor setups where the keyboard and mouse/trackpad are centered between the 2 displays. I'm sure it's fine for those people, but for me I prefer a primary display. (Currently using a 34" ultrawide-- while I'll lose a few inches from the sides with a 32", I think those are the least useful inches on the display at my usual viewing distance, so the 32" might be just right.)

I’m looking to purchase a Pro XDR used, to be paired with my new M2 Ultra Studio. Reading this review, the XDR supports all Studio modern features. Can any of the M2 Studio owners share more insights? Like support for Center Stage, etc. I only see officially supported the M1 Studio.

Apple is working on a new XDR, so I plan to buy a second old model XDR later on. I plan to keep my new Studio and the XDR until the software upgrades are not provided anymore, that’s probably 9-10 years. Thank you.

The XDR is just a display, it does not have a camera built in, much less any real “smarts” (like the Studio Display’s A13 chip) — so it doesn’t have anything relating to Center Stage. The Studio Display is currently the only stand-alone display that has Center Stage functionality built in.

You should have no trouble using it with the M2 Mac Studio and other modern Apple computers for many years to come. The only distinction between modern Macs (M1 onwards) that I can think of is how many XDRs can be supported at a time on a single machine. The M2 Max can drive “Four displays with 6K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt” and the M2 Ultra can handle “Six displays with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz”, so you should be in good shape to drive a couple of these :)

I’ve done it! I have ordered a Pro Display XDR with a high discount (B-Stock). I ordered it at a German store and will have to travel 230 km for it, but it’s ok.

I am so excited for this screen. I have been wanting it for years. Finally I will own something really nice. :)
What is B-Stock? Congrats— when are You picking it up?

Thank you for the useful details and the number of supported displays on the M2 Ultra. I did a lot of watching on YouTube related to the XDR but none of them have details of what “advanced Studio features” are supported by XDR, like mentioned into Yahoo review. That’s why I was curious.

B-Stock means most often the same as 'open box'. In this case, a German electronics shop was selling a B-Stock Pro Display XDR. The description says the screen is in mint condition, there are no scratches, blemishes or other damages. It fully is as new, has been tested and cleaned. It just has been opened before, and then someone decided he wants to send it back to the shop, for whatever reason (such as: didn't like the size of the screen, buyers remorse or anything else). In the EU buyers mostly have 14 or 30 days to send back the item. That's what happened here.

It had a huge discount for me. It was 3650 euro's (excl. VAT). The VAT is deductible for me, as I am self-employed and can bring in items into my own business. It will be my coding, copywriting and website making screen. That also means there is another deductible of 28 percent on 3650 euro's for my income taxes. It means it has roughly costed me 2600 euro's. Not a bad deal, I thought.

I won't get the Pro Stand, though. MediaMarkt was selling the VESA mount for 136 euro's instead of 229 euro's. I bought a VESA pole since I want the Pro Display XDR to be in front of me. The mount on the pole can tilt, swivel and rotate independently. It's this one: ACT AC8321.

Who knows, when someone will return a Pro Stand and it will be B-Stock, I will buy one later. For now, I don't really see the point of it. ;)

yeah that sounds like a pretty *sweet* deal :D That's some pretty good work tracking down a solid b-stock unit. And because you're physically picking this up, you can check it yourself to make sure everything is good!

I'm also not interested in the Pro stand-- definitely doing VESA mount. Enjoy!

Ugh, it's been a few weeks hasn't it? That's bonkers to have 2 problem units in a row for something so expensive.
Yes, I’ve been quite unlucky. This third one is stuck in Apple’s ‘processing’ stage. I’m hoping it’s that they’re going the extra mile on quality checks! No dead pixels or wonky glass, fingers crossed.

I went today to pick the "used" XDR Nano. To my surprise, it was brand new in the box and it had Applecare+ coverage until May 1st 2026. Serial numbers matching on the box and on the back of the screen. The price I paid was 60% off the retail price for a XDR Nano with stand and Applecare+, I paid $5000 CAD ($3775 USD or 3461 EUR), of the actual retail of $10,900 CAD. Really happy with my purchase, is like I almost got my new Studio M2 Ultra for free.

I ordered today the XDR VESA mount, to have it installed on one of my Ergotron arms, replacing one of the 43inch Dell screens. I'll wait until I get the piece to install it, really excited with my purchase. I will purchase another screen, if I manage to get the same deal. Eventually, prices will go down further, when the new 7K XDR comes out.

I'm curious about one detail, can the XDR be associated as product, to my Apple ID? I called Apple and they told me there is no such process, in other words, anyone who has a hand on the monitor, can claim it belongs to them. It does not makes any sense to me, please let me know. When I purchase an Apple product, it is automatically associated to my Apple ID.

Just bought my wife a 15" MacBook Air. She often uses it at her desk, so I'm going to try to convince her that she should take one of my Apple Studio Displays so she can work on a nice, big canvas when she's at her desk like I do. Then, of course, I'd need an XDR to replace my ASD.

Where's that diabolical laugh emoji...?!

It certainly seems like it should, given its value but afaik, no.

I don’t know the exact distinction but perhaps it is ~whether or not a product has an interface that allows logging into an Apple account.

Does this ring true to anyone else?

I noticed something similar to this previously while processing a warranty claim on an Apple Magic Key lard.

Apple sometimes associates product purchases with the Apple ID used on some primary machine the device is currently in use with.

This is a strange, subtle detail I have come across but had forgotten it until now.

I've had a 230 km drive from the North of The Netherlands to Germany (Bochum). Picked it up, installed the ACT VESA stand and it looks beautiful. I can't imagine how incredible the screen is. I have missed the sharpness of the letters on screen. It really looks amazing. And oh, that HDR content. VERY happy with my choice! 🥰

Yes, the idea that you have to be signed into a device for it to be linked to you seems to be the accepted explanation when I searched on this topic recently. However if you have AppleCare+ that, and by association your display, is linked to your Apple ID.
