pwnage help

I thought I would try jailbreaking my iPod touch using pwnage before doing my iPhone. It was a straight forward process, however i am now being prompted by iTunes to set up as a new iPod or restore from backup. Which one do I click on?

Also my maps, weather, stocks etc. apps have disappeared. Can i just re-install using the original update file or add them from installer? If the former how do i do this, i can see the app pack in my itunes/iPod folder?

I've just found this "First of all - ALWAYS set up your iPhone as a "new" phone - never restore from backup unless your phone was not previously jailbreaked!" as my iPod wasn't previously jailbroken does that mean i should restore from backup???

Thanks in advance

Hello all,

I'm an iPhone jailbreaking/unlocking newbie. I just used Pwnage Tool v1.1 to unlock my 8GB 1.1.4 iPhone for the first time tonight, in preparation for an overseas trip I'm taking this summer, and I've hit a snag.

Everything in the pwnage process went fine until I got to the point where iTunes asked me to activate the phone after I had installed the custom 1.1.4 firmware.

I mistakenly chose to restore from the previous back-up, which was a back-up of my phone from earlier that day, prior to the pwning/jailbreaking/unlocking. I haven't done anything to the phone after installing the custom firmware -- I did turn on BootNeuter and unlocked the phone, but I haven't even opened Installer.app or messed with anything else, for fear that I might further muck up the settings that would be backed-up.

Provided I don't mess with this new back-up file (a copy of which I saved to another directory, safe from overwriting), can I still use that to restore my SMSes, notes, etc. on a re-virginized phone? (That is, I am currently planning to re-lock the phone upon my return, and I'd like to know if I can still use this latest back-up file on it.)

If this back-up file will cause problems on a re-virginized phone, what can I do to save that information? There are lots of SMSes and notes -- as much data as I can, really -- that I'd like to save in the event that I have to create a new back-up file. Alternatively, is there a way to directly edit the contents of the back-up files in order to delete all third-party references?

Thanks in advance for your help.

its not a problem restoring from back up if your phone has NOT been jailbreaked before but if it has then those settings will mess things up.

You would need to restore again to your custom firmware and this time set the phone up as new.

Contacts are synced with your computers email/address book if you clicked on sync (so if you didn't do that) but you will lose everything else as there is no way to save text messages or notes etc.

so when 2.0 does get officially released what will i need to do?
and how do u re-lock it?

sorry if these have been answered already.

I'm slightly confused. Isn't the bottom line that, if I wanted to re-virginize the phone, I would have to set it up as a new phone? Is there no way to directly edit the back-up files to remove third-party app settings and information (e.g. references to Installer.app, etc.)?

I know there are programs out there that can grab SMSes and other information from iPhone back-up files and archive them to a computer (MegaPhone, SysPhone, and MobileSyncBrowser are three I've found for Mac)...that'd be better than nothing. I don't suppose there's any program that allows the reverse (uploading archived SMSes from the computer back onto the phone)? Could I use SSH to get at the SMSes and whatnot to transfer them from/back onto the phone?

If I've irrevocably screwed up this back-up file by using it on a jailbroken phone, I may just leave it jailbroken until June, sell it on eBay, and go for iPhone 2.0.

Pwnage unable to flash

I hope somebody can help me here...I've read the threads but clueless what should I do now.

I've just bought the UK iphone. Tried using Pwnage but after pressing iPwner & the phone subsequently reboot in Recovery mode, it showed "NOR flashing failed" error.

I have downloaded 1.1.4 on my desktop. However I don't know the actual iphone firmware as itunes ask to complete the O2 activation before I can start using the iphone; but I assume that it's 1.1.4 since it was bought in May. If it's not 1.1.4, I can't restore to 1.1.4 via itunes as I'm stuck at O2 activation as above.

I'm using itunes 7.6.2 (latest) & Pwnage tool 1.1

Any help would be appreciated!

I did explain this in the FAQ! You need to read more carefully!

UK iPhones are normally 1.1.2/1.1.3 NOT 1.1.4 - you may have bought it in May but the phone was not made in may!

Anyway this is what you do:

Download iLiberty from http://iliberty.zjlotto.com/Setup/iLibertySetup_1.3.0.113.exe

Plug your iPhone into the computer. iTunes will come up with the activation page - ignore it.

Start iLiberty.

Click on "other tools" which is the 3rd tab on the top of the application.

Then click on "Enter recovery mode".

The phone will restart and then iTunes will ask you to restore the phone.

Just click on yes and let it update to 1.1.4. (I would do this again even if you think you already restored to 1.1.4 - itunes will automatically download the 1.1.4 firmware).

Then when it is finished let iTunes detect it again and ask you to activate.

Then open iLiberty again and click on "Enter recovery mode".

This time CLOSE iTunes when it asks you to restore. Do not restore using iTunes.

Then use pwnagetool and press the ipwner button.

When that is finished it will go back to the activation screen on iTunes.

Again use iLiberty for recovery mode and then restore using the custom firmware you made using pwnage.

If iLiberty does NOT detect the phone you will have to manually enter recovery mode. Plug the phone into your computer with iTunes on. Press and hold the sleep and home button until the apple logo appears then let go off the sleep button until the itunes logo appears on the iPhone - you are then in recovery mode.

Thanks spinstorm! Will try this & let you know.
(I never thought of using iLiberty earlier as I didn't have any problem going into the restore mode)

I'm sorted now!! When I connect to itunes this morning, it automatically asks permission to update the iphone. From there on, everything's a breeze (always the case when it works isn't it :D)

I was missing some critical steps which I think wasn't clear for a newbie like me. I would also recommend these if you're stuck like me.

Can someone please confirm - is it OK to use the iphone which has been unlocked/jailbreak using Pwnage Tool on a Windows iTunes? (since Pwnage is a Mac application)

Yes, once it's Jailborken/Unlocked it can be used normally on PC/Mac whatever :)

I have a 1.1.3 iPhone unlocked and jailbroken with ZiPhone.

I want to upgrade to 1.1.4.

My plan was to restore, upgrade to 1.1.4, then re-unlock.

Should I use Pwnage or ZiPhone again?

Hi Pls help

Hi. Im a bit stuck here and would appreciate some help/

Heres what I had and did:

Had 1.1.2 Iphone unlocked with sim adapter (corner cut from sim card and adapter stuck on top. Worked fine. Soft upgrade via installer to 1.1.3. Worked fine.

Downloaded WinPWn yesterday. Downloaded the iphone firmware restore file and the itunes dll files.Went to itunes and restored iphone to 1.1.4.

When I pwn the phone, everything works fine (all the script appears on the screen) until it reboots. I get no pineapple logo, just the apple one, and it goes back into recovery mode. Thats it. I continued on and installed the custom firware but noting works and Itunes doesnt recognise the phone. I get the unsupported Sim message.

I have tried it with/without my sim card (Non AT&T) installed. Should I be using the Original sim, as I no longer have it?

I am running windows XP.

I have gone back to itunes. Restored again to the latest firmware and will wait for some handy hints. Should I use a mac instead or what am I doing wrong.

Thanks in advance

PS I didnt restore from back up on itunes (not intentionally anyway). I removed the back up, but when I went back after restoring the back up time and date had returned.

@the hedge: Your phone is unlocked and therefore not on an official iPhone contract - which is what I am going to assume.

If that is the case when you restore in iTunes to 1.1.4 official firmware your phone will reboot to the activation screen. It makes no difference what SIM is in the phone. If your on an official contract it will activate itself once it has restored.

Rememeber winpwn is STILL beta - and if the phone is rebooting back into recovery mode (and not the dial for emergency screen) then winpwn failed to "ipwner" your phone.

Restore back to 1.1.4 and run "ipwner" again. It may be worth removing winpwn and then reinstalling it again. I do not know if the DLL files are needed for the latest beta version either so maybe if you have 2 lots of DLL files there maybe a conflict. Try downloading it again without the DLL files see if it works if it crashes then redownload the DLL files and put them with winpwn.

If the phone reboots back into the activation screen then it was successful and you can restore again using your custom firmware... but if it doesn't work then remember its a beta.

And NEVER restore from backup on a jailbreaked phone as it will mess things up!

If you have a mac then I suggest you use pwnagetool 1.1 as its a stable non beta release - just make sure to include BSD subsystem with the custom restore as sometimes the unlock fails without it.

Thanks so much for the reply.

I have a friend with a mac, so illl hang off and pwn it with pawnage.

Thanks

Help....
I tried 2 hack my iphone version 1.1.2. using pwnage tool....

I had already intially jailbroken it but i wanted 2 upgrade to 1.1.4
I thought that al I had 2 do was grab the .ipsw file of 1.1.4 cutomize it and the pwnage tool would do everything for me. Instead I have text scrolling down my screen. saying
"BSD root: md0, major 2, minor0" scrolling over and over again and itunes will NOT let me recover 2 start over and Ive tried using ipwnage tool but it isnt working anymore either Im stuck and desperatle need help.

It clearly says FIRST you HAVE TO RESTORE TO 1.1.4 USING ITUNES!

Please after you fix this problem read the FAQ carefully again.

You need to restore to 1.1.4.

Start iTunes and plug your iPhone into your computer.

Hold the sleep and home button until the apple logo appears then let go of the sleep button but keep holding the home button until iTunes detects the phone and asks to restore it.

Do NOT restore from the back up make sure when it is restored you set it up as new.

If you can't get this to work keep trying as its a question of timing of letting go of the buttons but it does work even with text scrolling down your screen like you have.

I did answer your question.

First of all its not virginising your phone - that is a confusing name which is nothing to do with what your doing.

You can't strictly speaking save anything from your phone separate of the backup although there is something called time machine on installer which is meant to let you do that although I am not sure how well it works and there is also a thread on hackintosh about an iPhone "sync-suite" which may again be able to do what you want but I couldn't get either to work for me and to be honest I would just set your phone up as new and forget all the data you had before.

Remember contacts are resynced and so is your music so for me personally its not a big issue.

I don't see the big deal - just restore your phone using the custom 1.1.4 and then set it up as new and re-sync contacts and music... there is no need to use a phone with a backup that is now going to be corrupted and mess things up...

Hi. I have 2 questions regarding PWNAGE.

First. I have a OTB 1.1.4 iphone recently unlock with iLiberty. It's 3.9FB bootloader and 04.04.05_G now.

I couldn't find anything about not using PWNAGE in a already unlock phone. So I assume that is ok to do it. Is this correct? Do I have to do anything else before PWNAGE? I mean like restoring the bootloader or something like that.

The other question is about 2.0 firmware. I have this file: iPhone1_1_2.0_5A240d_Restore.ipsw. It has 203.803.534 bytes. Does anybody know if this is the real deal? I have some doubts, because of the name of the file. It sais: iPhone1_1_2.0, instead of iPhone1,1_2_0.
Can anyone confirm this?

Great foum BTW.
Thanks!

If you are already on 1.1.4 and unlocked you can still use pwnage.

Just connect it to the computer and press the "ipwner" button and it will reboot pwned.

Then create your custom firmware file and restore in iTunes as per the FAQ.

If you chose to change bootloaders back then you need to use BootNeuter and that will reflash both your bootloader AND baseband even though you are already unlocked so be patient.

Finally remember before using any of the 2.0 beta's you must restore and unlock to custom 1.1.4 using pwnage.

You can check if the file you have is real by loading it into pwnage - pwnage will recognise it if its real or give you an error if it isn't.

But you MUST start on 1.1.4 and restore to custom 1.1.4 before 2.0 custom.

Thanks man! Very good info. I hope this might help others too. :apple:

Sorry if this has been answered before, but I've scoured the boards and other sources for an answer.

I'm using Winpwn Beta 2 on Vista 64.

Everything works swimmingly following the directions. Only after I restore the custom firmware with iTunes and it gets to the Bootloader screen, it says "Couldn't find all required files" And then reboots.

The phone reboots to an activated/jailbroken state, but the phone does not recognize my sim card.

Is there anything I'm missing. In the advanced tab to make the custom firmware I have added the BSD Subsysem and the Installer app.

EDIT: Figured out along with the BSD Subsystem and Installer App I also have to add the BootNeuter app to custom firmware.

Aside from that bump successful and smooth activate/jailbreak/unlock with the Winpwn Beta 2 on Vista x64 with an OTB iPhone in the US.
