Hey Guys,

just got an XFX 1GB labled ZHDC (it's an XXX Edition) - anyhow. I used the mentioned method here and ripped the ROM of the Card - and injected the EFI part in Terminal. The Card was unsuable then... The Info said the GPU Temp ist -1°C :D

I just gave the 50°C Rom a try and everything worked so far. Two DVI Port (don't know if single or Dual... I just got 2x 22" Screens).

(!) BUT this is where I hope to get some assitance from you experts here: The Card makes a kind of static noise (knick knick knick knick) - Whenever there is something to draw on the screen. When I scoll through a website oder Mark some objects in the finder...

Even more annoying: In Windows I fired up an 3D Game and the card is permanently makin this noise. Does anyone know how to handle this?

Rgds,
Nils

I take it this sound is coming from the card itself, not through your headphones or something. In this case I suggest taking a look inside your case, almost sounds like a wire caught in a fan. . .

Hey - thanks for your post. The sound comes from the card itself. It sounds like a contamination meter - and it starts after the card heaten up. Roundabout 5 - 10 min of use. And the sound is only when there's some movement on the screen. I will post an Audiofile...

btw. the tower is open and there's nothing caught in the fan. Just double checked it.

My friend that is called "coil whine". Welcome to high end card gaming :) It is inherent in 99% of high end cards. youll notice it when the card is straining or rendering 3D and effects full time. Google it and youll see how prevelent it is. I have a GTX295 and it does it as well as the 4870X2 I had. I honestly do not even notice it anymore at this point.

Bleh. My XFX 4870 is silent except for the fan.

I just captures an audiofile with my iPhone:

http://the-nils.de/share/noise.m4a

You can here the clickering noise... this is while I draw an selectrectangle over the desktop. The fun thing is the pitch of the noise alternates, depends on how big the rectangle is.

In the last third of the file you can listen to the sound which happens everytime i scroll through a Webpage...

Funny?! - And I'm pretty sure it's not the fan.

Wow, that is a crazy sound. RMA baby!

Hi all, can i get some help please.

I have followed the instruction word for word. Created a boot cd using magic iso. I have used the instructions from http://web.me.com/jacobcroft/4870Flash/4870Flash.html.

My problem is everytime I try to flash the card i get adapter not found. The card is in there, Works fine in windows and OS X detects it.

This is driving me nuts. What else should i do??

mac pro 1,1. 2.66 4GB ram.

xfx4870 zhfc 1gb

Again the card works in windows and I haven't even got to the flashing part, so I could not have bricked it.

Thanks

while that tutorial has lots of pretty color pictures it was clearly written by someone with a very limited understanding of what needed to be done.

In any case, as I have been shouting above the fray (to little effect).........YOU DON'T ANOTHER CARD IN WHILE FLASHING !!!!!!!!

Choose the DOS Disc as boot disc and shut off.

Remove whatever other card is in and use 4870 in Slot 1 while flashing.

If you get a screen, ATIFlash will find the card.

Update: fixed the snow problem

Hi guys, I am having some problems with my xfx 4870 (ZHFC). After flashing the card boots up fine in both osx and windows 7, however there is a significant amount of "snow or fuzzy-ness" as explained by the above poster.

This happens everytime I boot and in BOTH osx and windows... I am using a 30" ACD with Mac Pro 2006. I can't figure out why... is this the result of a bad flash? Eventhough everything boots up ok?

Also note, I've tried an apple 4870 in my machine and it worked fine. No problems at all.

I flashed with the popular walkthrough:

http://web.me.com/jacobcroft/4870Flash/4870Flash.html

Could this be because it's a ZHFC? Any help would be greatly appreciated :(

Hi guys, just to update, it turns out there wasn't a problem with the ZHFC card at all...:p I RMAed the first one, thinking it was a faulty card, got a replacement, flashed it fine, and had the exact same snow issue.

Absolutely perplexed, I then looked at my 30"ACD dvi plug....oh geez...one of the pins were pushed up and apparently not going into the female side of the card.

The weirdest thing though, is that when plugged into my 7300gt (w/ bent pin not going in) the screen is absolutely fine, crystal clear. Only when plugged into the xfx would the snow happen.

I then proceeded to straighten out the pin, using the pci slot bracket and a small allen wrench, which worked great btw. Plugged it in carefully to the xfx, and bam...crystal clear!!:D

I guess I wasted $14 bucks on the rma shipping, but glad I got it to work. I'm kinda shaken with apple though, as this was a refurb 30" model. When I got the display, the AC adapter plug was also severely bent, plus this dvi pin bent issue too...luckily things work ok.

just purchased the XFX HD-487A-ZHFC off of ebay, and wanted to ask if you had to download any drivers ?

according to the walk through you posted, you may not have to if you have osx 10.5.7 installed?

and di you deviate from the walk through at all?

cant wait to get mine and flash away!!

not sure what you are saying.

Version 3.1 came out in 2005, long before 4870

Use the new one

sorry i got a bit confused as well, so i will get the atiflash360, and do it to it!!

cool,

so what are the bene's to flashing this card for the mac pro?

will cross fire work at all for windows ?

Thank you thank you thank you

After all that pain and headache all it took was a newer version.

My first flash ever!!!!

PS. use the newer versions of ATIflash:rolleyes:

Thanks The Rominator

If anybody with a lot of cash has spare time and a real desire for enhanced performance, there are now a few 4870s with 2 GB of memory, such as this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102826

That said, I'm wondering if anybody's tried some of the more exotic cards? I'm curious as to whether or not some of these cards with Displayport or HDMI would work properly in a mac using those ports. I'm wondering if a card with Displayport in particular would work, as we've theorized that that's the reason we're not getting two dual link DVI ports out of all the other cards we've used.
