Race to dump the 4870 ROM, Who's first?

I purchased 2 Power Cables from OWC and it is plugged in to the Motherboard and the graphics card, that was the first thought that crossed my mind as well.
Do you think the power cables are bad ??? I put the card in my PC and it works fine.

I doubt the power cables are bad.

When you say the card works A-OK in Windows...did you boot to a Windows desktop only? Or did you try a 3D App in Windows?

I would have a good look at the card itself...make sure none of the tiny ceramic capacitors have been knocked off. I had a X1900XT once that would only work in an upper slot at 1X lane width. It was because many of the little caps that connect the pins to the card had been broken off by some ham-fisted galoot previous to me.

In theory, dirty contacts or a bad slot would cause a similar outcome.

That new method of flashing the cards will help a lot!

If you succeed and we get it working in OS X, I will be a very very happy guy.

I've lost count of the days I've spent buggering about with this card and I was about to give up....It would be very gratifying to finally win.

Thanks for posting the link, if all else fails will this card flash with rihildinger's ROM?

Re power cables: I think you need to have 2 cables to get it to work. I also have an 8800 GT (I'm on my second one after the first went pop a couple of weeks ago). When I returned it to Apple I kept the cable so I have two apple ones which seem to work fine, in Windows of course).
 
Error in ATIFlash

Hey all,

I've had a quick go at creating my own ROM using Pimolo's method with his python script etc. It looked to be going OK. I used the DOS cd method to re-flash (im happy with that process for now) but I got an error message in ATIFlash:

error in SSID check
Old SSID: 2441
New SSID: 2448

Error 01FLG. Press '1' to continue

But the system crashed. Its still found in Device Manager in XP. I got a bit confused in the commands for making the new ROM - do I enter a new command everytime I see 'dd'?

Line by line explanation for the shell part of making the new ROM would be greatly appreciated - is this the first full command:

dd if=4870.ROM of=efi.part bs=1 skip=63488 count=49152
blocknum=`printf %d "'\`dd if=pc4870.rom bs=1 skip=2 count=1 2>/dev/null\`"`
size=$(($blocknum * 512))


and then this the second?

dd if=efi.part of=pc4870.rom bs=$size seek=1 conv=notrunc

then the third?

python fixrom.py pc4870.rom pc4870.rom

Not sure where you are finding issues...when you read the instructions, I thought it was pretty easy to see where the line breaks were.

Anyone wanting one should RUN to their computer and order that ZDFC card, it is what Rihldinger wrote ROM for.

I don't think SSID should change as it is in PC BIOS part of ROM.

The EFI ROM has 3 parts. As I recall, first is PC BIOS, then the Mac EFI and finally the GDDR5 memory init table. All 3 parts are separated by blank space. I know that both PC BIOS and Mac EFI start out with "55AA".

Hello all,

as I want to upgrade my Mac Pro 1,1 2006 model I found this thread.
I wanted to ask for some help and the opinion of the experts in here.

My problem is: I ordered the XFX ATI Radeon HD4870 (PCI-Express, 1GB GDDR5 Speicher, DVI;HDMI, 1 GPU) with the model number HD487AZDFC.
--> I read that the ZDFC is working in the Mac Pro and can be flashed with the roms available.

Now I have the package in my hands and they sent me the wrong one.
I have now part number: HD-487A-ZWFC and don't know exactly what to do.

I did not open the package because as I read here there is no rom available yet.

Will this card ever work or should I send it back ? I know I could play around and try to build something with all the information here but as soon as I open this thing it gets more complicated when it would require to send it back.

Please, give me some feedback what you think?

I did not run any 3d apps I just booted into windows. I would like to know if there is something that I can download to run a test or something on the PC with the XFX card installed.

I dont use the PC at all its just sitting in my office. The PC has Vista Premium installed.

The ZWXX cards are infinitely inferior to the card you ordered. There is no working ROM for them...though the injector route may very well work for you. But I would return the card.

I would rather have a used earlier card than one of those new ones.

The ZWXX cards just scattergun the heat back into the case. The cards with reference cooler actually exhaust their generated heat from the case. Best of luck with whatever you do.
 
Strange behavior when selecting expansion slot utility. If I select the slot 1 & 4 configuration and put the 7300GT in the 4th slot and the XFX in slot 1 the XFX card is not recognized by Snow Leopard.

The picture below is the current config with the cards in the slots listed above.
Rominator do you have any other suggestions ???

I am on the way to return this card and will not open the package therefore.
Perhaps I can still get the correct one I ordered - lets see what will happen.

Mine is SKU# 11133-03-20R 512 MB.
Just check the SKU code to be the same so you can download the patched BIOS from this thread.

By the way I tried flashing the card the way you described by far the fastest easiest way to flash. I flashed the 4870 rom the macxfx rom and the original rom back to the card.

Yeah, me too. I take it you took one of the three remaining cards in the link on this page....I had the one before you. At least flashing it should be a quick thing as I have everything prepared and I've aready done it a few times.

I'll probably end up selling the ZWFL on ebay to try and recoup a bit of the expense. You live and learn I guess.
 
well got the card i posted about from videocards uk
and it flashed perfectly just need the second cable to get it in the mac

tested using the power from dvd drive but don't want to run it like that
cant find a cable yet in the uk anyone know where or have a spare one ?

Meanwhile, can you tell me how long the card took to arrive? I ordered mine Saturday so I'm guessing it will be posted tomorrow. I paid for faster shipping but it would be nice to have some idea about their turnaround time as I have never used them before.

Great news that it flashes perfectly. I had apprehensions that they would send the wrong card or there would be some other annoying thing.
 
Does anyone know of a card I can currently purchase that can be flashed, as in possibly a link to e-tailer that I can order from?

I've located two 4870 1gb cards and I'm trying to decide which one to buy. One is a ZHFC and one is a ZHDC. From reading this thread I can see that both are flashable and work well. Are there any benefits or drawbacks to either type? Which one should I get?
