Asus 4890 maybe something completely different...

@Cindori

Maybe if were lucky there is a newer bios available for your card that has some more space :)
Did you check?

@Leonoid

Unfortunately my 4870 has started artifacting (not flashed yet) and is now kaput. So I have to RMA it, there goes my immediate plan of flashing it with your OS X bios. Sorry, I can't test :(

288-1e131-000sa

So as it was told in 4890 thread there are 2 kinds of sapph4870 11133-19-20r
with qimonda memory and with hynix. Probably there are several more board revisions.

Anyway if you have card with:
pn: 288-1E131-000SA
sku: 11133-19
I got good news for you

today i`ve recieved bios pack from sapph support and made version for qimonda. works for me but testing is required. Later i`ll publish hynix version.

In attachment pc and mac bioses, but please make shure that you got qimonda memory not hynix.

I have this card (288-1E131-000SA, qimonda memory, sku 11133-19) and flashed the sapphire 1GB ROM from here:
http://groths.se/atiflashingtool/ROMS.zip

This booted in my mac and even worked fairly well on dragon age, but after some period of time would get noise elements flashing on the screen, one time I got white noise covering the entire screen, random stuff. So, I tried the qimonda ROM in this post and this ROM bricked my card. It is back to the PC for me. Maybe there is some other difference...but anyone using this should beware.

Leonoid or Rommy

as last attempt to make this card work in OSX I have scavenged the web for other versions of the ROM

I found three, attached here. please take a look and see if there is any room for EFI in any of them. or I will just sell this card and declare it the 1st non-flashable 4890 :(

definitely you are using wrong bios or flashing it wrong ;-)
First of all which memory is on your board?
If it`s qimonda then my version of bios MUST work. Probably you should flash it from DOS, i dunno why but ZEUS makes card unworkable.
If it`s hynix then try this version if it`s not work, then problem is more complicated.

And use DOS tools from ati.

Ok I'm very new to this. I bought a Ati Radeon 4870 512mb and am having trouble finding a ROM for it. I have spent some time in this thread but don't want to read 81 pages unless its completely necessary. This is the card I bought http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...236995&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_500wt_1182

I know it says Visiontek but nowhere on the actual card does it say Visiontek. can anyone point me in the right direction?

Chaos,

Thanks for the heads-up on the corrupted ROM. I have been perfectly happy with how my 4870 has been working just simply using the virgin 4870.ROM file (Apple's pure 4870 ROM). So, I've not been inclined to flash using the ROM file you created. I just deleted it from my HD so I wouldn't accidentally end up using it in the future.

As for Quartz Extreme... I'm running Snow Leopard and, frankly, when I open System Profiler, the info for my card and monitors doesn't say anything about Quartz Extreme at all:

ATI Radeon HD 4870:

Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 4870
Type: GPU
Bus: PCIe
Slot: Slot-1
PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 512 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
Device ID: 0x9440
Revision ID: 0x0000
ROM Revision: 113-B7710C-176
EFI Driver Version: 01.00.318
Displays:
Cinema HD:
Resolution: 1920 x 1200
Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)
Main Display: Yes
Mirror: Off
Online: Yes
Rotation: Supported
SyncMaster:
Resolution: 768 x 1024 @ 75 Hz
Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)
Mirror: Off
Online: Yes
Rotation: 90

However, I did download a Utility Program that checks to see if Quartz Extreme is working and it shows Quartz Extreme acceleration for both of my displays.

I guess I just got lucky in buying the right 512MB card. Actually, only a little bit lucky. I read these topics over and over again and it seemed the XFX cards ending in HFC were the most compatible. So, when I found a 512MB XFX card (YHFC) for $134.99 shipped, I jumped on it. Unfortunately, TigerDirect has since sold out (within a day or so of me placing my order).

Mark

Can I have a link to that ROM file?:)

Asus 4890...

@Cindori

Only 7.BIN Had enough room.
So you can try that one.
If that fails please tell me if the PC version works fine in windows.
That one answers a few questions of mine if it would still work.
If that fails we don't have to try anymore...

Cindori and the other rom/flashing experts may be interested in this

i recently bought and flashed a 4870 without realising that DVI-VGA adapters were not supported and had been thinking that my problems were related to using a rom that was not fully compatible with my card.

im able to get one monitor working through a dvi to vga adapter, but only if my other monitor is also plugged in ( both identical monitors both via VGA adapters) without the second monitor plugged in the first gives an error "frequency out of range"

it seemed to me that the card was detecting the display from one socket and setting correct resolution/refresh rate ect on the other, cant be specific what gave me this impression, at the time i was trying all sorts to get them both working, at some points using one monitor on my second card.

anyway dont know if thats any help to anyone who knows more about the roms than me, help to be able to give vga support?

SYSTEM spec: mac pro 1.1 running SL 10.6.2/windows 7
flashed card: xfx HD 4870 zwfl ver C.0 flashed to ZWFL/ZWFC rom downloaded from the start of this thread.
second card HD 2600 XT (apple)

cheers to everyone who has worked on making it posible for us mac users to get reasonably priced graphics cards

Your observations are correct. we have known this for awhile.

Apple has (once again) switched the channel that the EDID info goes down related to output. The same trick was used on Nvidia 5200 & 6800 cards. When we initially flashed them we had reverse, only VGA worked with DVI showing up only in rare circumstances. (such as using identical displays on both outputs so EDID was correct in both ports)

When we did the Nvidia cards we had someone smart enough to re-route the DVI. (Arti Itra) Sadly we have never had an ATI genius come along and help fix the issue with ATI cards. Since it is the dying standard that isn't supported while DVI is, it is again doubtful that we will ever find answer. My guess is here again there is a tiny little resistor sending those EDID down wrong path. Some clever deductive soldering or a ROM writing genius....one or the other is needed.

Thank you man im super greatful :)
It works perfekt in bootcamp and it dosent frezze osx on startup anymore and i can see the card in "about this mac".

But for some reason it´s goes black just when the desktop is suppose to appear in osx 10.6.3?

fritzflint 10.6.3

@fritzflint

Yup some Dual DVI cards don't work with the new 10.6.3 kext.
You can simply replace them with the ones from 10.6.2 I attached to this post.
Simply boot in windows and replace the 10.6.3 files from system/library/extensions with the old 10.6.2 from the attachement.
Reboot into OSX and it probably works but buggy now.
You will need to rebuild extensions permissions and cache for it to work correctly.
You can do that with options in multibeast or kext utility or osx86tools etc
Good luck.

Dual DVI Kext

@Cindori

I just passed him the same files you send me.
But when I used it I had removed my original graphics card.
So I couldn't use kext helper to install them because of my blacked out screen.
And being to lazy to put it back I just dragged them from windows and fixed them later.

Mac Pro

@Cindori

Shaking a Mac Pro like crazy above your head to remove a screw..
That is quite a workout indeed ;-)
