I can tell you that ANY card will work, just that some of them give power cable warning or require 10.6.2 drivers (packaged here http://groths.org/dualdvi.zip)

But really any card is flashable as long as you upload the ROM and let someone modify it.

@ Firebar / @Ikyo : Asus EAH 4870 Mac modified Rom for 1G and 512.

Made ROM from Ikyo's ASUS 1G the same way I made my ASUS 512 let me know if it worked for you ok!

@ Rominator 10.6.3 changes to flashed Asus EAH4870 DK 512

Both DVI give black screens in 10.6.3.
Fixed with 10.6.2 kexts from Cindori.

Hi guys,

Anyone had luck with this beast? Was not able to turn up any direct hits through Googlage and my forum searching...

HD 4870 x2 2G GDDR5
PCI Express Dual DVI

$200 a fair price for a used one? 2GB of DDR5... dear god...

You can't flash the 4870X2 I'm afraid although you can still use it, have a look around in these forums to find out how.

The 4870X2 is just a pair of 4870s in crossfire on a single board. OS X will only be able to use one of these so you will only get the graphics performance of a single 4870 in OS X but in Windows you can get the full performance of both units working in tandem. As for it being 2GB, practically it's only 1GB. Each 4870 unit inside the 4870X2 has 1GB of VRAM and they both store exactly the same stuff. Some would say they shouldn't even advertise them as 2GB cards.

Yeah - I Won An Ebay Bid !!!

I just won a bid on ebay for a XFX HD-487A-ZHFC 1GB Card. I won it for $187.50. I put it for higher but I knew I was going to win it. I also knew (since these are coming hard to come by) that this wasn't going to be cheap. I even used DEVONagent for a search engine (another great app for Mac) that sub-searches FAR better than Google or any other one out there. And you know what I found for both XFX HD-487A-ZHFC and the XFX HD-487A-ZDFC?... NOTHING (except for that ONE site that was charging $315.00 just for the card). Well, in the end it will cost me only $300.00 for the card because I have someone that's going to flash it for me.

Too bad I didn't find out about this stuff a couple of months or even a couple of weeks ago I could have won one on Ebay for $130.00. But that's fine - life; what are you gonna do, right? Well, hopefully I'll get productive soon, I've got some videos to edit.

By the way Cindori, I'm sure you're right about that one little glitch on the power cable thing that pops up every time you start the machine, but quite honestly I push my machine so hard I just don't want to take any chances and hopefully this card will more than meet my needs for the video production work that we do online. If I wanted a gaming PC then I would build one or have one built. I actually had a Custom built PC that had the TOL (Top of the Line) AZUS mother board, 4 Gigs (the first to come out over two years ago - not that I need more than 2 Gigs because they are mostly processor and graphic card reliant and the extra 2 Gigs didn't increase the frame rate at all), two 3870's, Koolance Exos-2 liquid cooling system on a Cooler Master 832 Stacker with a custom plexiglass door so you could see everything from the 7 green lit fans to the Pink Liquid Coolant that not only liquid cooled the Intel QX9650 processor but also had my RAM liquid cooled and the processor was OC'd to 4 GHz. I also had a Matrox Box that had 3 21" ViewSonic 4:3 ratio screens so I could play UT2004, Crysis (and at the time Crysis got up to 44 to 47 FPS at 1280 x 1024 on ALL 3 screens - just fluid and super fast and added what was missing with the extra two screens so I had 145 degrees of PURE VISION - JUST SICKLINGLY AWESOME and fast EVEN BY TODAYS STANDARDS !!! I was very grateful to have that machine), Rainbow Six Vegas 2 was awesome too. I adjusted all the .ini files on Rainbow Six to mod the weapons to really make things LOL hilarious. All of you reading this should watch my vids. I didn't even realize (until a month ago that these vids are STILL online) TOO FUNNY !!! I actually was shooting these bot enemies in the air with ease !!! and embedding them in the walls. With NO recoil. That's how powerful I made these weapons. And I couldn't have modified those games without the help of guys on forums like this one. So Cindori and Rominator - THANKS FOR YOUR HELP IN GUIDING ME TO GET THE RIGHT CARD !!! Now I hope this card will work like Rominator said - Just Flash It - & Forget It !!! Hope you enjoy the vids, here's the link:

If any of you are interested in viewing our product reviews on our Tactical Equipment Line on YouTube.com, please let me know and I'll give you our website info. Again, thanks for all your help and if things work fine after my guy flashes it, and it works I will contribute a little bit toward your "Modifying Cause" Oskar... Please let me know (here) what you think of the gaming vids. Later all...

Spanky and Cindori: Thanks very much for your replies. I will target a different card instead. :apple:

Last night I stumbled onto the motherload of information that I just knew had to be out there somewhere... I will post it here for other noobs to refer to before asking questions like mine-

InsanelyMac Graphics card forums

:)

InsanelyMac is geared towards Hackintoshes, not Apple hardware. Whole different ball of wax there.

So you mean to tell me that I post all this stuff last night and no one saw my vids to comment on? Not that I'm special or anything but these vids (if for nothing else) are just flat out funny !!! If you guys want a laugh then please watch 'em and let me know your thoughts. It would be encouraging to me. Anyhoo, enjoy the vids... The links are located here:

Then you can watch the rest of them here:

later all...

By the way Cindori AND Rominator, I again wanted to thank you for all your help. I think anyone going the route of getting any card, do your homework. These guys are awesome...:D

Thank you for the kexts. I installed using the included kext helper and they do show up in the extentions folder with a newer date (4/5/10). Unfortunately I still get a black screen. I did pick this card specifically because I thought after flashing the rom it would be future proof, but clearly I was wrong. I tried to get the original cards listed in this thread but they go discontinued very fast. My card is still pretty old I've had it over 6 months.

These kexts seem to fix the problem for other people.. maybe I have an unlucky card.

Maybe because it's a "little" off-topic? Don't you think? ;)

So are a lot of posts that come on here from time to time; so what isn't a bit off topic? I thought you guys might want a laugh or two. I actually thought this was a "like-kind" related topic; since ya'll are into modding (or slightly altering) stuff...

Well, I hope you enjoy a laugh or two from these vids anyway...

cant get past grey apple boot screen

ok guys I'm totally at a loss.
have the sapphire HD4870 1024mb [pc version]
my macpro is a 1,1 with 1900xt in it.

i've followed all kinds of steps to get this card flashed on my mac pro but CANNOT get past the grey apple logo screen when I have both cards installed.
slot 1- 1900
slot 2 - 4870
I also tried reversing the order, and other slots to no avail.

Is there something I'm missing?
should I be installing PC-EFI 10.5.?

I dont know cant figure it out. I even tried flashing my card in dos on my pc and then put the card in the macpro and only got black screen.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks.

Ok, here it is, my modified ROM for Sapphire HD4870 1GB
SKU: 11133-04-20R

Both DVI ports seem to work, even though I only did minimal testing with a 24" LCD and a full HD TV (DVI - HDMI connector). I noticed some short 'black outs' on the TV while using XBMC but after changing DVI ports it looked fine...

Hey zedobios- if i flashed my card [which appears to be the exact same as yours] in dos on my pc, would i then be able to simply insert it into macpro 1,1 and it would work?
Is there a step I'm missing?
sorry for the newb question but i cant get my macpro to even boot with this card in slot 2.

Asus Rom 1G

@ Firebar

I have a 512 version of your Asus card and it works on my MacPro 1,1.
I made the 1g rom the same way I made the 512.
It should work.
But you U tell me if it really works 1 don't have that card to confirm it ;-)

Leonoid! how the hell did you make your rom...??

I have a asus 4890 that also has a 80 as third and not 7E, 7D, 7C....

perhaps you could have a try at it?

I attached zip with all u need.

my rom is labeled "Cindori ASUS"
it has to be renamed EFIROM.rom for the skript to work

Ny Mapp?

Anyhow, I don't think there is a simple solution to this one.

Problem is one of mathmatics. The three pieces together all add up to more than 131072.

So, they must be reduced.

The Asus 4870 that Leonid did had an MCUC table approx 500 bytes shorter than yours. This combined with additional length in first part is TOO MUCH.

My first attempt shaved a block or two of 512 bytes between PC BIOS and the little tag "44a4" with EAH in it. The one I did for the vanished Grue had this same little stub, but I shaved AFTER it in his.

Yours doesn't have 512 bytes after, so I shaved before.

If you want to help, you could figure out where we can shave from PC ROM and keep it functional. Has to be before and/or after the "44a4" part...the little Asus stub.

If you can make PC BIOS work with 512 or 1024 shaved from the PC BIOS portion, I can write your ROM.

Failing that, we will need to test various ways to do so with it just as PC BIOS. Once we find where we can trim, making it work in OSX will be cake.

I have a guest this weekend, but no job this week. So I will be able to spend time on this tomorrow or tuesday.

But as I said, if you can trim form PC BIOS and make it work. (before checksum) than it will be easy.

Compare the one I did to original and you will see what I mean.

sapphire 11133-19

So as it was told in 4890 thread there are 2 kinds of sapph4870 11133-19-20r
with qimonda memory and with hynix. Probably there are several more board revisions.

Anyway if you have card with:
pn: 288-1E131-000SA
sku: 11133-19
I got good news for you

today i`ve recieved bios pack from sapph support and made version for qimonda. works for me but testing is required. Later i`ll publish hynix version.

In attachment pc and mac bioses, but please make shure that you got qimonda memory not hynix.
