So after a day of RCS it brings the most wanted features like typing indicators, read receipts, higher quality photo/video, and reactions.

But it's still missing basics like group read receipts and typing indicators in group chats.

I'll still dump whatsapp for it to consolidate into 1 messaging app, but it's still definitely inferior to messaging apps and imessage.
Reactions are not included. It‘s a coincidence that they show up on devices due to the old SMS reaction text parsing features both sides (iOS / Android) added to their apps years ago.

Reactions are part of UP 2.7, which Apple has yet to implement (they are on 2.4 from 2019).

Lame. Apple being Apple.

Well they did implement 2.4, which does not include reactions. Reactions were only added with 2.7 (June 2024), which was well past the development threshold for Apple anyways.

So iOS 19 maybe then? Feels like Apple wouldn’t prioritize it for a .1 update.

Also why would they not give us 2.6 that was release in 2022?

Even if they gave us 2.6, there is pretty much nothing new you‘d notice (2.5/2.6 mostly introduced bots functionality changes).

2.7 is the first spec update to add new frontend features like reactions, inline replies or undo send / edit messages.

UK updates looks like Vodafone is awaiting approval from Google to enable RCS on iOS 18. On the subject of O2 and RCS in a mega thread related to the iPhone 16 and Watch 10 they said "We are working to ensure that RCS is available for all our customers as soon as possible" on the subject of Three, they said they are "working with partners and hope to bring this service to our customers soon!

But bear in mind this was posted on the 10th and posted as the last point within a megathread to do with the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 & Watch Series 10 announcement

I do not know why Vodafone need Google's approval to roll out a GSMA and 3GPP standard, unless they have to do upgrades to their Google IMS platform which is supported by them..

o2 also use the Google Platform, so they maybe in the same...

Sorry I dont see the point in all this I want RCS the Apple Implementation is a compliance implementation, and misses key upgrades to RCS...

If it comes brilliant, if it doesn't well meh....

it is probably due to the glowing press release Vodafone gave Google's service last year to justify shutting down their own RCS, it wouldn't surprise me if it's commercial approval due to some marketing payment they received, rather than technical.

Still nothing on Google Fi. Isn't it funny that Google, the company that made so much noise about Apple not supporting RCS, doesn't support RCS on the iPhone?

Because they don‘t have their own carrier profile (they are instead tied to the generic T-Mobile one afaik, which doesn‘t have RCS yet?). So the ball is in T-Mobiles court and not Apple.

It's frustrating because it's as simple as talking to Apple to set up a carrier profile. Google stubbornly refuses - to the detriment of their paying customers.

Google is content to sit on their hands, blaming everyone except themselves. If I didn't need the security or the seamless international usage, I'd be gone.

It‘s not that easy. Costs money and they‘re essentially renting networks from bigger ones, I‘m unsure if you can just split off into your own profile from a big carrier that essentially runs your business.

Except that plenty of other MNVOs under the sun have it figured out! Heavy hitters like Metro or Mint and smaller ones like US Mobile. Some even have "advanced" features like Apple Watch support.

Meanwhile, Google gives us a workaround for visual voicemail - something the first iPhone had. One has to wonder the cost of working around Apple vs the cost of working with Apple.

Does Mint even support RCS yet? AFAIK the only MVNOs that support it don‘t do it due to any their carrier profiles but due to their parent provider managing it for them.

Mint and US Mobile (on Lightspeed/T-Mobile) use the generic Apple carrier profile, and neither currently support RCS.

The US Mobile CEO said they hope to have support by the end of the year.

In case someone from Poland watch this thread and scratches his head when and who will have RCS in our Beautiful Country:

For time being the closest are T-Mobile users, where Play, Plus and Orange does not give any hope.

Welp I learned there are actually people out there who DON'T want RCS capabilities. An Android friend of mine actually disabled as many of the RCS features as possible. He's disabled typing indicators, read receipts of course, no RCS in group chats....it's actually hilarious.

My wife uses RCS on her Pixel, and she has tying indicators and read receipts (except for me) off as well. The only thing she cared about was full quality photos and video.

I would disable typing indicators in iMessage too, if offered the option.
