Also another problem is, even the normal wide camera shoots at 1/60s in situations where my old X shoots at 1/15s. Even if the sensor is bigger, it needs more noise reduction to compensate for the much higher ISO. Good thing people in low light will be less motion blurred, but if you want detailed quality pictures, it’s better to use a manual app and adjust…

Same for the zoom camera, and the OIs in that lens is not that good…

Sadly found that out.
It was my favorite lens but …. Sigh ?

I have a 13 Pro and I am really close to selling it, or maybe just seeing if it will blend, and getting something with a usable camera.

I understand what all the "pro photographers" are saying, that the new camera system is the best ever, but that you have to be skilled to get the best from it. My counter to that is that for the $1800NZD I paid, I should be able to get some sort of realistic photos out of the phone, which my Note 9 was more than capable of doing. Maybe not pro quality, but at least as good as a 5 year old iPhone 7 without needing to shoot in RAW and color grade in Lightroom.

I am loathe to pay more money on apps ($90 for Halide!!) just to get a functional camera. I have been using my Work iPhone 8 for pictures for now, and it is much better. I am willing to try one though, if anyone has any suggestions for a cheap one.

I've had so many other(non camera related) issues with this phone that it is really becoming a huge pain to even own the thing, like it has actually made my life worse since buying it. But the camera is the final straw for me.

Here, for example, is a picture of the Ultra-Rare red KTM 390 Adventure. This is not a color you will see offered on any KTM website or brochure, mostly because it is supposed to be Orange. Why the phone would edit it to look like this is beyond me. At the very least, natural looking colors should be possible. iPhones in the past always had natural looking photos. Maybe not always the highest quality, but natural.

Now they are like someone cranked the beauty filter up to 11 on a store-brand phone.
Maybe it's just me but I think that photo of the motorcycle is fantastic. If that wasn't the real color, were you using a filter or a profile?

Send feedback to Apple including the photo you took and point them to the brochure and what the color of the bike should look like. Open a case with Apple Support is another option.

Anyone shifting the key photo for the live photo as a workaround, aren't you actually selecting a frame of video when you do this rather than another photo? I thought the live photo worked by constantly capturing a short roll of video when you have the camera open, and when you press the shutter button it records the video from immediately before and after as the live photo, which is then paired to the actual photo. So it wouldn't really be a workable substitution. Or am I wrong about how it works?

It definitely isn’t a workable solution but it’s all we got ? outside of raw and 3pt apps

Another option is to shoot bursts (holding volume up key). The processing in burst is different, not that “smart”. I saw this when taking selfies with the timer…

Also for portraits if you don’t want to look Chinese white, it’s better to underexpose -0.3 or -0.7, you can go in camera settings to keep this setting unchanged every time you open the camera. This helps with the overexposed look for portraits.

Also as I said before, go for rich contrast as style to get (a bit) rid of the hdr that the camera does almost all the time.

But yes I was trying ProShot yesterday and is much better.

Shooting with the main camera app, I like the pics from my X better than thr 13 pro max (portraits), but using ProShot, I like the 13 pro max better :)

Is this happening on iPhone 12 Pro cameras? Is this an issue with iOS 15 or hardware specific to iPhone 13?

Photos from iPhone 13 are made too sharp in post-processing. Ironically in the camera settings you can only make the images more sharp (the slider starts at zero and only goes up)

This is in part because influential reviewers on YouTube compare different smartphones by zooming in on photos to compare "levels of detail". The winners are decided by photos with the most sharpness and clarity, not how pleasing they are to the human eye. So you end up with flat, high ISO post-processed images.

Can anybody make side by side comparison between native camera app and Halide quality of the JPEG photos from 13Pro ?
Default settings on both apps. Wide. Autofocus = ON. No edits. JPG (Sorry, I don't shoot on RAW)

Camera App looks just fine to me? My woman looked and said the default camera app makes it more sharper and the colors pop slightly.

I have been having issues with the iPhone 13 Pro Max camera as well. Not sure if related to the post-processing, but something is very wrong. I think the issues started with iOS 15.1.

Thanks for the comparison!

I don’t see any differences besides exposure in some cases.

With halide you have the option to turn off smart processing, with it on it should show the same results, the difference being in the shooting with manual controls.

No Photo or profile that I can remember. The photo itself is fine, but the bike should be orange, not red.
