Yeah, I'm not seeing differences between the two here. Maybe there's less noise (in a good way) with the default camera app.
There will not be any difference. Halide uses ProRAW and smart HDR in the app. The only difference is the control you get over the cameras in Halide. You can’t hard select the cameras in the default Apple camera app, but you can in Halide. Lots of other manual control as well but the image quality is the same.

But there is the option at least to disable it in Halide. I don’t think that many other camera apps (ProShot, Moment) uses this at all.

I'd be happy enough if the native camera app just had that option. Then at least those of us who were bothered by the heavy processing could turn it off, and those who are happy how things are can just carry on. (I guess Apple would never do that because this is "best camera ever in an iPhone").

I agree, a simple toggle would make everybody happy.

They did have an option to disable Smart HDR till iOS 15. Not sure why Apple removed that option.

I looked close and the only difference I notice was that sometimes with the stock camera app, objects might be a wee bit darker looking.

its still present on 12 and older now? even with ios 15

You are right indeed.

Initially I was under the impression that it was not enabled in iOS 15, but I was completely wrong.

Smart HDR toggle is available on the iPhone 12 even on iOS 15.

So Apple intentionally disabled it for the iPhone 13 series?

Why?

Could be a software bug that only affects the iPhone 13 models. I suspect that the setting will be coming back in a later point release.

Am I doing something wrong ? Probably 😂

I just took two near enough photos in auto mode on two devices. One the iPhone PM 13 and the other a midrange Samsung s20 FE. I used 1X zoom on each photo. They both look okay, but when I pinch in and crop the iPhone looks terrible. Is it something I’m doing ? Cheers.

This is the one from the samsung, then cropped into light switch.

And here’s the same with the iPhone pro 13 max.

No, it’s not something you are doing. It’s pretty much the majority of the discussion in this thread. The issues are in the processing that makes photos look smeary.

Nice to see Halide offers the option to turn off the AI processing. The problem I've had with the app is it throwing up an error when taking RAW photos. Halide support says it's an Apple photo issue, but Pro Photo has no problem shooting them.

iPhone Ultra wide and telephoto lenses have issues with low light. Never use them when there is limited light. Always click on 1X zoom and leave it at that.

For an Apple to Apple comparison, you have to use iPhones Wide (1X) lens.

Apple made a mistake of giving people the ability to “zoom” from 0.5X to 3X in increments. Some apps only let you click on 0.5x, 1X and 3X which is better because this does not result in digital zoom.

Halide for the win.

I installed Halide last week. After playing around with it for days, I can't really tell any real difference between it and the stock camera app.

My results are like the large photos posted by the guy above in this thread.

What am I doing wrong? (have 2 more days before I can cancel the trial)

Thanks!

I learned that earlier thanks to another poster advising me. The photo were taken in 1X. I then cropped the photo manually on each.

i think that they trust the smart hdr 4 to be so good, that the toggle isnt needed anymore

So you are saying that there are 2 versions of smart HDR in iOS15, older version for the iPhone 12 and a newer version for the iPhone 13?

You may have had 1x selected in the camera app, but the metadata of your photo is showing it used the 0.5x ultra wide lens (because of the f/1.8 aperture). Since it was low light, the camera app likely chose to use the 0.5x ultra wide lens and digitally zoomed in 2x for the 1x shot.

If you have 1x selected in the stock camera app, it does not guarantee you'll be using the 1x wide lens. It will decide whether to use the 1x wide lens, or the 0.5x ultra wide lens zoomed in 2x based on lighting conditions and what it thinks will take the better picture.

The same goes for 3x. If you have 3x selected in the stock camera app, it will decide whether to use 3x telephoto lens, the 1x wide lens zoomed in 3x, or the 0.5x ultra wide lens zoomed in 6x.

The stock camera app does not give you control over what lens to use, whereas 3rd party camera apps like Halide do.
