Gosh, that looks disgusting. My 13 Pro also takes really garbage photos.
Super wide lens is garbage. And tele.
Main - it’s hard to say, but it can produce cool photos. And ugly as well.
13pm is huge disappointment.
I’m reading this thread and really confused what to do. Sell and by11, or stick to it.
My vacations ends in 3 days. I think I’ll review all photos taken during this time, compare it with my old phone, and elaborate facts-based decision.
Because phone screen is not good to compare photos.

I connected my new 13pm to the TV with 50” screen. Some pictures are great, and videos are good too.
So my goal will be to compare and decide, whether this photos worse than from my old XR or not. For now I do know some are bad and some are better.

A question. Would you think if the option to remove HDR was present some improvements would be noticed depending on scene type?
Yeah, i think so. The smart hdr is sometimes too aggresive and in some scenes its even worse than my old 8

Most of my 13pm photos come out looking blocky and pixelated. Especially macro photos. It looks like there is some type of “interference”. And it’s really irritating me.

Here is a pic of my hand I just took. No matter what I try. All pics come out looking like this garbage.

I’m guessing you used a telephoto for that? Try using wide angle. It works just fine for me.

I realized that when i use ProRaw and click “Edit” on the photo, the terrible hdr oversharpening disappears, it can be even removed permanently if I for example adjust the photo a little

here is an example how jpeg vs ProRaw look (they both look the same in the gallery before i click “edit”)

Whoa. Will check later! If so, may be it can be a solution. But how to save jpeg without using 3rd party apps?
Only way I know is to import raws to Lightroom, and after export from there to camera roll.
But this is time consuming and gets me angry. All this workaround stuff with most expensive phone on the market!

Is the telephoto lense the macro lense? If so then yes. But all pics are like that. Blotchy and crappy. It started with the last update I believe.

I don’t think so but you can still take macro shots using the telephoto. Manually switch to 1x and then close up for the picture. I see the crappy macro shots using the 3x but when I switch to 1x the shots are crisp.

Macro is the 0.5x lens. Check the metadata of the photo, your pic is probably using a digital crop of the 1x lens. It’s probably why you see a lot of artifacts in your photo.

Apple got overly aggressive in camera switching to maintain brightness and contrast across all focal ranges at the expense of noise and detail. Sure it’s fine for social media but for everything else, it’s terrible.

I don’t mind that my 3x photos will turn out “darker” than my 1x if it means I get more detail at that range.

I haven't read all of the thread, but worth noting that if you select the telephoto lens, the camera may in fact use the normal lens and crop it - which produces garbage photos. There's no way of controlling this in the camera app. You can see which lens was used in the info/exif data in the photos app on your phone. Only way to ensure the telephoto is used when you select it is to switch to something like halide. Apple does this for sensible reasons - since the normal lens has a wider aperture in certain circumstances it could be better - BUT their algorithm is utterly useless and often picks the normal lens when the telephoto would have been much better. Ridiculous there's no way to force it. Examples here: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...issues-using-iphone-13-pro-telephoto.2315153/

Welp lol. lens partially to blame here but also Lighting and micro movements in your hand will drastically affect the sharpness of a macro shot (especially the latter).

It doesn’t matter what lighting I have. And I could take a pic of an object that doesn’t move. And get the same results. This camera is junk lol. I purchased halide. So hopefully once I learn to use it. My pictures will come out better.

There’s a macro shot using halide. Of my pillow. Seems a bit better. I couldn’t get even half way decent snaps using the macro camera with the native app.

Junk is a strong word. It has its moments. Often times lighting and reducing shake plays a huge role in getting good macro shots.

Attached is one that is outdoor and another thats indoor to show texture on one of my sneakers and the leaf.

You touched on a HUGE point regarding the macro shoots. Even with a high end camera that has in-body inage stabilization, getting sharp macro shoots without a tripod is very difficult. The macro magnification is so high that and movement is greatly magnified.

Now you take a phone at 1/3 the price of these high end cameras, add in 50 other functions, in a smaller size... You can't expect the phone to outperform the camera's image stabilization.

Even with high end cameras, you pretty much have to use a tripod to get sharp macro shots. The same hold for iphone macro shots. IF you really want to test the iphone macro capability, put it on a tripod, then you'll know for sure whether the iphone can take decent macro shots.

Here is some macro shots I took with my 13 Pro Max. In order to get some really good macro shots you will need to be very steady, otherwise you will create a blurry imagine. These shots were taken with the Ultra lens.
