I was going to say, now bad can a picture of cheese be? Now I'm hungry...

Just because: The wife hates the pictures from the 13, and wishes she could have her 12 back. Sometimes I really just have to stand there and be quiet...
Do you think photography on the 12 comes out generally better-looking than on 13?

Lightroom is free and it making photos in Raw. Why pay?)
But I don’t like raw on this matrix, except almost perfect lightning conditions.
Apple’s AI was great. Why it is now killing things? (You’ve replied below…)
My bad - I need point and shoot camera to make photos of my kids. No time to play with manual things.

Won’t be better. Samsung and other Android phones are kinda 100mpx. But photos are more or less the same, except colors, and other beautification.

That is really bad thing.
So nothing they’ll fix, because it was done deliberately to achieve “better pictures quality”.
The 48mp is really for 8K video. I also have Lightroom and use it but Halide is simpler. Also Darkroom is free with a few crippled features (which now for some reason are free to use) and you can step in and out between Halide and Darkroom. I’m really a video guy with ProCamera and FiLMiC Pro. Halide really really bothered me in price but after purchasing I always go there for manual control.

It is what it is…

Actually, I can’t see why it is better then Lightroom. Manual control is in there too. May be it is not that good? Just trying to figure out for myself)
Tools and controls are the same…

Video I discovered exactly on this phone. It is much moooore better))) than some photos. So I tried it in HD at 60 FPS. That is good.)
But can’t decide, whether I need hdr or not in video, because it takes twice storage space

SHE seems to think so, and that's all that matters. (Yes, I am well trained:D:cool:)

Although after her hast tirade, I haven't heard anything else. I did tease her rather hard about having 'the most advanced iPhone in the house', and she's not happy, and should I call 'Uncle Tim', and complain about it for her. I got the searing blue hot 'look', a rather nasty gesture, and so far, silence.

my iPhone 12 Pro used to take incredibly over-sharpened photos, I hated it. My iPhone 8 used to take better photos than my 12 Pro to my eye, just looking back at photos and couldn't believe it myself half the time. I did get a 13 mini recently and basically everything is fine again.

I had an expensive SLR camera, and when it was on 'auto', you really had to pay attention to the screen, that small small screen. It would show what the camera 'intelligence' was focusing on, and if you weren't paying attention, you could get something that was, well, less than ideal. What a waste of money. Sometimes it would switch 'focus' multiple times. There was a way to force it to focus, but it required two hands, and a degree of attention. *shrug*

So this raises a question. Does the non-pro (13 or 13 mini) take less-sharpened and processed images that than the 13 pro overall? Any comments from those who have used both would be greatly appreciated.

13 has more extreme AI for sure, yeah more unreal just like other flagships nowadays, the blind test I point out above showing most of the people just like more unreal fake photos but almost no one cares the clearness of details. If you want the best detail and no AI just pure raw photo then buy Sony Pro-I big camera sensor phone which has way lowest score in the blind test.

Thanks. I was specifically referring to the difference between the 13 no-pro and the 13 pro. @magicMac stated in a post above that his 12 pro took over-sharpened images and the he got a 13 mini and things look better. This observation makes me wonder if there's a difference in sharpening and processing between the pro and non-pro models. I have a nice Nikon DSLR with a plethora of nice lenses, so getting another camera is not my problem.

could be, i always felt there should have been a way to switch it off. You can imagine going from an iPhone 8 which i still was really happy with camera wise - just wanted 5G and thought I needed a bigger screen (didn't in the end) , so I spend over a grand on a new 12 Pro and for a year I really hated apple took my money for a phone with a WORSE camera. the only thing that made me more annoyed was half the internet was praising the phone so they must all be idiots or there was something wrong with my 12 Pro. I'm happy the camera on my 13 mini, but typically apple have got my money twice to solve an issue they created. Apple have become really good at this. It's just as well the 13 mini has almost double the usable battery life from my iPhone 8, so at least something was gained - also it does take better pictures in poor lighting.

I really appreciate your response. Thanks! I'm in the same boat. I have an 8+ and wife has an 8. The cameras on both work well I like the max sized phones for the bigger screen. (aging eyes). I'll have to look more into this. If I can be satisfied with the smaller screen of a 13 and the lesser battery life that a max/pro model, I may take a look at that option. I could just buy a moment lens to get the telephoto which I use frequently.

I’m thinking to ditch it and go for 11-11pro.

Can anyone tell me, please: Is the video from the 11 the same good as from the 13pro?

Exactly.
Two big point to regret: money loss (crap, it was 2 grands in my country for 512 pm), and being fooled by half the internet happy with this new photo style.
And yes, as it was mentioned here before - such plastic photos with unnatural colors are, what people like now.
There was not even single second thought in my head, that there will be a huge lie behind all of it, or, that photo quality measure became such a mess.

I’ve increased quality of the photos, by the way: stopped to use any other lenses except the main wide.

I really don't know what to do with mine. I paid a lot of money for it, and was looking forward to rejoining the Apple ecosystem

This is a shot I took, using the watch as a remote control. For whatever reason, it did a burst. Great job on the bursting, no idea why it did that or what I am supposed to do with it. Aside from taking up 10x the space, there is literally zero benefit to taking a burst photo.

For comparison, I have attached a picture taken with a Sony Xperia Z in 2013. Same kid, 9 years earlier.

This is a burst picture too. Similar lighting, similiar time of day.

I am not sure how well over $100billion in R&D leads to a camera this bad. I have bought $39 supermarket phones that have better cameras than this. Absolutely astounding.

The rest of the software on the phone is a mess too. nothing works.

The image data suggest it was taken with the ultrawide lens. Are you aware of that?

Has this been posted here before? A Dec 9, 2021 interview with Apple that includes a line that their photo processing is inspired by oil paintings... This should be a filter or a slider, not the default.

Most disappointing camera I've had on a phone in 10 years.

Why doesn’t MR write an article about users complaining about the over-processing?
Anyone know of a way to get them to write an article to gain some traction?

It's not unheard of, for 'smart' cameras to tweak images. I started getting into astrophotography, and found out that Nikon cameras (as I remember it) 'tweak' images, resulting in issues for that type of image. Even their 'raw' isn't raw enough to leave the images alone. Canon cameras have a 'rawer' raw, and are favorites of telescope junkies wanting to brag about what they saw.

Of course, this was AFTER I bought a, at the time, top of the line Nikon camera, and was looking for adapters for my 'scope.

I can say that the images I have gotten from the Canon are very clear-ish, and there is enough there to do some post processing and zooming.

I don't know what to offer if the iPhone isn't tweaking images. It's meant to be the 'idiot's idiot proof all over good camera', and I would expect a lot of tweaking by the innards. For raw images, people would be better served by a different device.

Having said that, I was at a concert years ago, trying to capture that 'perfect shot', and failing spectacularly. I droid user was taking absolutely amazing pictures. I asked if he would like to share some of them. 'Sure, $25.00 I shot!' the monster croaked. WHAT? Forget it! At that point, iPhones took horrible dark concert pictures, and might still fail at it. *sigh*
