But iPhone has tons of AI in photos while true mirrorless does not, so it has better photo than real mirrorless sometimes, so call it mirrorless is acceptable.

That is the problem and the subject of this thread. The "tons of AI" is ruining many of my photos, look at the picture I posted of my legs a few pages back; complete cr*p. The iP13 Pro AI is artificial but not intelligent... ?

I’ve been using mostly portrait mode lately, which does not seem to have that over processing baked in. And it feels good. When I use the normal photo mode, I would turn on proraw. I also tried ProCam, but the 3x in bad lighting can be very blurry. I still prefer the convenience of sliding left on Lock Screen.

I just received my second iPhone 13 pro max (not a replacement) but a second iPhone so I can have two iPhones basically a second camera because I shoot a lot of photos. Both iPhones and their cameras produce the same clean results. Image quality is very nice from both. It is possible that newer iPhone models (purchased a few months past the release date) have better quality control as they probably aren’t as rushed on the assembly line, therefore made with better care.. however I’m sure the iPhone is still heavily mass produced, just not as crazy fas as in the beginning before launch.

I suspect you might be right. I usually wait several months after launch day if I’m buying a current model for that reason.

The post processing is so bad that for years I based all of my photography on what I see on the screen is exactly what the photo will be when I take it. Not with iPhone 13 pro it isn’t anymore. The photo I see on the screen when I take it is now way different photo taken/seen afterwards. And truly garbage frankly. You would’ve thought seeing those huge cameras from prior gen to now would amount to night in day differences. Regardless I want my What you see is what you get photography back. HDR toggle please!

I don’t know why HDR is how it is now on iPhones as it used to be good. The S21 ultra for example HDR is amazing and it’s a shame that the new iPhones are struggling so much in this area.

Yes!!! This!! This solution would make the majority of these issues go away and the facebookers and instagrammers wouldn't know the difference. I'd like to see an (M) mode which would include the HDR toggle AND allow the photographer absolute control over the images, ISO, f-stop, shutter speed... This doesn't even need to be the default, just allow complete control of the camera.

Why not just drop $50 on Halide then?

Let me answer to you.

Because It’s 3rd party app not from the Apple ecosystem. Because you need some additional steps to get your photos in the camera roll. Do I need to continue?

I’m editing almost every photo now in the darkroom to fix HDR beauty effects. I’m taking photos with -0.3 expo correction.
It is not good. No. It’s just disappointment. Friends with Android are laughing at me. And they are right(

If you’re going this much of a process every time, get a proper point and shoot (ie. RX100, GRIII). At the end of the day, Apple is always going to gear their photography towards mainstream “normal” users regardless of the “pro” stance they take in their marketing. If I’m going to be taking pics that matter to me, I always carry my GR III, its perfectly pocketable and easily available in a pinch.

calling it a disappointment and saying people are laughing is a bit much, don’t you think?

A bit much?
Yesterday my friend bought Samsung S20, twice cheaper than my phone, and without that problems.
It is the disappointment for me. Huge disappointment.
I bought it ONLY because of the camera. Very good at all reviews and marketing. I don’t need other fancy stuff like super cpu or screen. I was much happier with my 6plus, than with this one.
That was like a bomb - local law forbids to return such devices, if it works fine, and no more toggle to switch off this fckng beautification HDR. How?!((
My last Apple for sure.

15.3 ? Any differences ?
I read 15.3 was just bug fixes and optimizations, really just 15.2.2. I'm waiting for 15.4 with a fading glimmer of hope. Since they've introduced HDR, every incarnation has become more and more aggressive producing the rubbish we now see. Apple seems to be pandering the the FB and instagram hipsters since, sadly, that's a major portion of their market. We camera nerds are a smaller portion and will probably receive less attention. It's probably going to be Halide or some other 3rd party app or Android for us.

The moment app produces the cleanest ProRAW shots in my opinion. And it doesn’t over sharpen or over saturate.

Apple default camera, ProRAW screen shot at 600% or so enlarged

Moment app ProRAW is much cleaner.

I do like the photos on the 13pm. (im not a pro photographer). i prefer it over my Note20 ultra.
first thing i did when I got the phone was to take a picture of my 2 yr old daughter and I was satisfied with the result and it met my expectation. had a Pixel 2 and 4xl before and i was really opting to get a pixel 6 pro but no luck on buying it. my choices were only either pixel or iPhone. the reason why I only prefer these is because for me they are both very good on capturing motion photos (no live photo setting). I couldn't do this on my previous phone, a slight movement blurs the whole image of my daughter. the first thing I thought of when I saw the pics from 13pm is it is way sharper than my note20 ultra. it reminds me the first time i had the pixel 2 (very sharp and detailed). I thought the 13pm has the same or more sharpness like my 4 xl (dont have it anymore)but different color science. At times yes it looks over sharpened to me and not natural. colors are boosted or there's a strong saturation and it does this if there little light. But thankfully I still like it as it gives me a better view of the photo. i may be still on the process of adjusting because the note 20u makes the photos brighter and i know brighter doesn't always mean it's better. the 13pm for me can also do it by raising the exposure a bit. my only gripe is why does it crush the shadows too much making it blacker and unnatural. even on night mode i would raise the exposure and the shadows would be brightened and after capturing and waiting for the photo process finish the shadows become blacker ?

even with imperfections on the photo side I dont regret getting this phone. I would love to compare it side by side with the Pixel 6 pro. do i wish i had the pixel 6 pro instead? not really. the iphone for me shows me the actual setting of the place if it's dark then that's what I get but with the things inside the photo sharpened - well good for me as I find it presented well for me. BUT i cannot say that the camera system is what it should be. they may have intended light sensors to be small and upgrade it little by little (maybe for marketing purposes) and just make the most out of it (like pixel 2-5) and then introduce a slightly bigger sensor the next year. But yeah, who knows if i would've gotten a buggy pixel 6 pro. so 13pm is fine, for me I just appreciate it for what is on its photo processing, it don't give me bad photos, most importantly gives me a clear picture of my daughter. good thing is on the next patch, use face id with a face mask. just my 2 cents...

I’m noticing better images lately, everything isn’t so blown out when lighting condition gets tough.

Colors edited in VSCO Cam.
