WOW!!!! I’ve not seen an app work so well. The camera quality is better than anything I’ve seen on my 13 pro max. Dang it’s good. Now I’ve only tested the app indoors with medium to low light conditions, so no outdoor shots yet. But I’m am very impressed. The focus is much more precise and the detail I see from the finished photo is superb, even when zoomed in 600%. It seems as the app works with the sensor much better if that makes any sense. The controls are great once you know where everything is. At first I didn’t think it was “all that special” until I started to use it and had all of the settings customized to my liking. ProRAW is fantastic. I haven’t played with jpeg yet but I’m sure it’s awesome. The app defaults to basic settings / lower quality until all are set to best. It’s $4.99, no subscriptions or in app purchases! It’s the BeastCam app.
Sample from a ProRAW file & Lightroom edit. Try and get that web (500% enlargement screenshot) with the default camera app! Focus peeking was used.

TIME FOR JPEG FILES!!
The following samples are from a unedited JPEG file straight out of the BeastCam pro app. No retouching or sharpening or anything was done. The other insert or screenshots of that original image zoomed in on my phone as far as it would go down to the pixel level, and I don’t see any loss of quality or watercolor painting or anything here. It looks a little blotchy because it’s probably zoomed in 800%. Way beyond its original size.

So far this app is the best I’ve used in terms of image quality and the way it uses the full extent of the large sensor in the 1X camera.

Well I couldn't get passed the way the iPhone 13 Pro Max picture look and my main focus was on the iPhone 11.

When I do compare it to the Galaxy S21 Ultra, the S21 has a more natural look and the images doesn't seem as processed. Some pictures look as if they have more detail in some areas of an image on the iPhone 13 Pro Max, but it may be a mix of noise reduction and sharpening.

I'm sure I could get really impressive pictures on the iPhone 13 PM, but the processing is eliminating that at the moment.

If things stay as they are, I can't look past that processing on the iPhone 13. The GS21 Ultra is what I would use for pictures while I will use the iPhone 13 PM for video recording as I like it more and it doesn't have the issues the images have.
There is better detail on the s21 ultra and HDR is superior

Questions for the forum.

When does the iPhone activate the autofocus rectangle? The facial on always comes on, I’m talking about objects.

It seems to me, that it used to be more prevalent when taking photographs in earlier versions of iOS. Is this observation correct? I’m on 15.3. This update made photos worse.

Evaluating photos is so subjective. Would be great to have a photo site or blog run a blind comparison of Halide, ProCamera, this BeastCam and others against the native app to see what a group of blinded evaluators think.

this app is the best I’ve used in terms of image quality
What about aggressive noise removal and sharpening? What about hair details in photos with people?
Most horrible effect I’m noticing is with hairs and other things with similar structure

I’ll have to test that for you and myself, I need to find a subject willing to pose. When you take people portraits, how far away is the subject? The further away the subject, the less resolved hair will be. Same with leaves and grass. Other factors include motion blur from too slow of shutter speed, wind blowing the hair etc. So far fine details have been nice, especially when using focus peaking. The manual focus option in the app allows for one increment at a time which is great for macro or when your iPhone is on a tripod. Focus peaking is what I used this morning to get the super thin spider web in focus. That really impressed me. I hope to have a portrait very soon!!!

About 4 feet away. And posting here isn’t all that great as the photos I load are compressed and reduced in megapixel size therefore the quality gets reduced quite a bit…

Nothing special here, I get the same results straight from the default camera ?‍♂️

Quick snap, no edits straight from the default camera. Sharp as ever.

I've been lurking in this thread a bit, but I believe I've figured out the issue (for me at least.) It seems like the iPhone 13 pro is very sensitive to shake and maybe the OIS isn't very good or at least there could be some variation between devices. I've found that using ProCamera and it's anti-shake button, which is used instead of the shutter button, greatly improves the image quality of the photos I've taken. I'd be curious if this has similar results for anyone else. Screenshot below of anti-shake button in ProCamera, you may have to set it up in the app settings.

Not sure, all my recent photos have turned out excellent using the standard camera app. Not sure what Apple has done but I’m getting a lot less blown up highlights and crushed shadows.

Photos are also extremely clear and not oversharpened.

Interesting, are you on 15.3 or 15.4?

Low light looks fantastic… I did use ProRAW and the BeastCam app. ISO 800 and Lightroom edit of the Hulk!! iPhone was on a tripod and focus peeking (manual focus) was used to get the top of his head in focus.

So…. Did iOS 15.3 have some have some background camera enhancements that we didn’t know about? I ask because I see details in my images that I haven’t seen before. Either Apple did or the BeastCam app produces better results than the default camera. For example:

The image is zoomed in as far as I could go on my iPhone. Usually the image falls apart and degrades as we zoom in. I’m seeing extremely good detail from the 3x camera in this image from the BeastCam app…

Opinions?? Can anyone vouch for the image quality in iOS 15.3?

Please everyone, if you want a great breakdown of what is happening with your phones (and the reasons/limitations behind them) please read this recent technical blog post from the folks at Halide.

Edit: I’d consider asking this to be pinned to the top so that everyone can see this.

This does a good job of summarizing a lot of the issues people are experiencing here.

My favourite quote:

”Being conscientious of the magic in computational photography helps me appreciate it so much more.”

Physics is always working against smartphone camera users as we expect more from our devices with each passing generation without wanting the physical size to change. Got to work with what we got instead of expecting perfection with every pic.

And this is the change Apple needs to make to ProRAW.

”We find this crosses a border that computational photography shouldn’t cross in a professional context. RAW capture should be explicit, not a surprise. In a RAW capture format, the camera should honor user intent and creative choice. If the user picks a lens— even the ‘wrong’ lens— the software should use that lens. If the ‘Camera’ considers that to be a mistake, I don’t want it to stop me from taking the photo. I want to make my own mistakes. As they say: creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.”

Halide. Again? Looks like advertising of this expensive app for me

I used s21 yesterday and human faces look unnatural, look like ghost skin.

I’m talking overall stills not skin tones. Only pixels manages to nail skin tones. I think Samsung and iPhone are very much similar for skin tones. iPhone can sometimes make people look like tomatoes. You can switch off skin tones to make it look better in settings on the ultra

Generally the iPhone takes very good photos but does struggle for HDR and dark scenes as it crushes the blacks
