Update Error

I am trying to update to 2.1, but keep getting an error message: "The update is improperly signed."

Anyone knows how to fix this?

you shouldnt be getting that... but latest version can always be downloaded manually from groths.org

lads,

is there a comprehensive list on what graphics cards work in a 1st gen mac pro?
i`m looking to buy one and my research left me a bit puzzled, the sapphire radeon 4890 1gb seems to be the safest bet from what i can tell?

One of Cindori's threads has a list, though that's pretty outdated, most of those cards haven't been available since late last year. You could try one of the 4870s or 4890s available on Amazon, but there's no guarantee they'd work.

Id bother to update everything, but 4000 series is so old. I mean today you can get 6000 series. Two generations between. I'll be back with better guides and new Zeus when we get ability to convert newer cards.

sure, the 4890 is old, but still pretty quick.
and for 130€ a pop definately good value.
the 5770 would be about the same price...
does the 4890 still work under 10.6.5?

My 4890 works, but I would go for a 5770 or 5870 nowadays if I were buying a new card.

5870 is a bit dear, but 5770 sounds good.
does it work in a 1,1 mp?
and what brand to buy?
i read a lot in netkas`s forum, but i`m still confused...

I'd register an account over there and PM Rominator to see what 5770 he flashed and how he did it. He can give you far more accurate information.

You were suppose to dump the original ROM for your own device before flashing it.

i Know !

But it was 2 in the morning ... wanted to go to sleep and thought that if i would just flash it with a good efi rom nothing wrong is going to happen . Please , if somebody has this rom ... send it to me .

Hello everyone, new here.
I have been very busy looking into flashing a 4870 for my mac pro 1.1 Even though I did a lot of research I still managed to mess it up and buy a card that seems to not work well, or at all ( which is the XFX 4870 ZWFL vers.G1). here's my other post about that:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/877441/

Anyhow, I am wondering how to narrow down my search for a card that will work. Some seem to work better than others and there are about as many versions of a card as there are threads on flashing them. The compatibility guides I have found so far mention only a few cards, which are pretty old now and only 512MB. ( (Somewhere it says to use 1GB cards with Zeus. )) The one guide I did find with about 10 cards listed mentions mine along with a picture of it, so I'm wary of that list.
Any help shortening this search would be truly helpful !

Sorry for the newbeee question, hope it doesn't annoy too much
Thanks for all the help so far,
Bhang

reference cards work best

the closer it is to the Apple one, the better

so early 512 Meg cards with the reference fan are best bet

EARLY XFX cards with part numbers like "ZHDC" or "ZDDC" are best in the 1 Gig world. And again, if you look at pix of them, they are very similar to early Apple cards, but different coloring.

The reason the "ZWxx" cards were originally recommended was that they originally worked. MOST 4870s flashed beautifully but then 10.6.3 happened. Ever since then, MANY 4870s aren't good flash candidates. The further they strayed from reference design, the more trouble they became. If the fan has only 2 wires, RUN away.

I have flashed well over 100 of these 4870s in last couple years, I know what I am typing about. With any flashed card, it is always best to stick with one close in design to original card the ROM came from. This makes sense when you think about it for a minute.

It is unfortunate that the 4870 flash guides were never updated since 10.6.3 brought mayhem, but that is how it is. Netkas and Keita wrote patches that contained earlier driver versions to limp these cards into future OS revisions, but I don't know if anyone has bothered for awhile.

But as pointed out, 6870 is a better choice for many things, especially if you have 3,1 or newer.

This board was the place for 4870 info. The best flashing info has since moved to Netkas' own board. He does the bulk of the ATI figuring out and has almost as low a tolerance for foolishness as I do.

When flashing a card, it is best to REALLY read and compare notes and THINK before buying up a card and hoping that someone with experience will come along and figure it all out for you.

Cindori's Zeus even works best with early 4870s and in many cases can do everything in a single reboot. But only for 1,1 and 2,1 Mac Pros would I seriously recommend a 4870. The 5xxx cards flash pretty well but boot screen is difficult to see. The 6870 cards are flash able for EFI64 only but will work in 1,1 and 2,1 with some limitations.

It is likely that after Mac Pro 2011 (or 2012) comes out with newer ATI cards the there will be a flash for 1,1 and 2,1 machines. The 6950 will likely even became mainstream then.

Read & think and you will end up with a card you like.

Or, pay Apple $450 and get a 5870 that has no issues at all.
