iPad Retina iPad Wallpapers Thread

Are these retina wallpapers made at 264dpi? For optimal quality use 2048x2048@264dpi. Seems like most of these are 72dpi.

DPI is irrelevant. 2048 pixels is 2048 pixels. You have one pixel for every pixel on the iPad's screen. The iPad can only ever display at 264dpi because that's how many pixels it has in every square inch.

The reason many of them don't look good is they seem to be getting compressed when uploaded to various image sharing sites, and also the iPad seems to compress some images automatically when you blow them up to full screen, even when they're 2048x2048.

Try saving it to your photos on your iPad, then emailing it to yourself, and check it from your mac. From what I'm reading, it's the correct resolution, and just a display issue. Make sure your software is up to date, also.

OK I did another test. Both these images are from an svg file which is a vector image format, meaning you can render it at 10000x10000 and not see any pixelation. So I took that image, made it square and rendered to 2048x2048 and saved as png. same for a 1024x1024.

Unfortunately imgur converts pngs to jpg so it's not AS high quality as the png but for this test it's good enough. I can put the png's somewhere but I couldn't find a place that would let me download them as pngs, and didn't want to put on my own server as I'll probably delete them at some point. So without further adieu:

Both those show up on ipad as 1024x1024. But if you save the image to your photo album it's quite clear one is 2048 and other is 1024 (zoom in on her right eye and the sliver of hair next to it). Still doesn't solve why some pictures do show up as 2048x2048 but at least if the image is 2048x2048 that's what you are getting even if it says 1024x1024

I downloaded a couple of your wallpapers and on my Mac they also show up as 2048x2048. I didn't check the resolution on my iPad, but after applying them as my wallpaper and just visually looking at it, they look fine (particularly the 458 Italia, that one shows up really crisp). But then again, my eyes aren't necessarily the best in the world.

I checked a couple of mine and didn't see them anywhere at least as far as tineye is concerned. I wouldn't even mind sites like this if they posted the source of the image. Maybe someone liked one image and wanted to see what other ones that person did.

On a more positive note the guy that was looking for a hot asian woman background should check that site out.

Yes, its from this picture. I got a decent screenshot from the actual movie in 1080p. I'll see if it turns out.

I can confirm that Safari on iOS compresses them to 1024x1024 to view them, but when you save it to your iPad, it's saved at full resolution. If you want to test for yourself, save an image and then plug your iPad into your PC or Mac and go to the photos folder. There you will see the dimensions are still 2048x2048.

no, but there are jailbreak tweaks that do so.

unfortunately, it will probably be a while before we see a public jailbreak for the new iPad on iOS 5.1
