This is the most overblown nonsense I have ever heard, right up there with "antenna-gate." People love to overreact about all things Apple. OP loves spreading it around too.

Strongly disagree. Crippling hardware to push upgrades is not nonsense.

That's not the case at all. They prolonged the life of phones with dying batteries. Should they have been more transparent about it? Sure, but you can see how people react right here in this forum. It's a joke, a bunch of children.

If you bought your phone from Costco you will have 3 months to return.

Yeah nah, i like my iPhone X. A11 is fast and swift as butter and i always get a new phone on contract every two yearsa so this is a petty non-issue imo.

it would only bother those who buy outright and use 3-4+ years [though]

I am not suprised Apple is using this technology to make peoples phones last longer. Afterall better to have a working phone then a dead one. However I think this should be an option and not forced upon users through an update. Just inform users of this when the new update is there so people take the decision themselves.

And that's the only thing I think Apple could have done differently in this situation, was somehow inform the users more directly about the power managing than indiscreetly through license agreements.

Yes what Apple is doing is dirty. But there is no alternative, unless you want to go to data sucking, privacy stealing, malware infested Android. I certainly don't.

Not much of a choice is it. Either over priced Apple hardware with poor batteries and software that downgrades your specs, that also highly restricts the functionality of your device ( and not just for security reasons) or Android with the many, many problems associated with it.

I wish someone like Nokia could rise from the ashes as an independent company with their own (new) smartphone OS.

For me I will keep using my iOS devices, but I will not be upgrading unless I see some changes at Apple.

They will get one sale out of me though, as I will be getting an LTE Watch when they are released where I am, as I want to spend more time at the beach and not worry about leaving a phone when I swim.

What I don’t understand is why Apple implements this in a later iOS.

If they’re all about it why not implement it in the shipping version ios with new hardware?

People who don’t update iOS down the road to get this “feature” could
Possibly be SOL?

Well, when they decided to devote resources to handle this issue, they implemented it in the CURRENT iOS at the time. I don’t understand your comment. I’m guessing you’re saying they should’ve implemented the feature on previous iOS versions retroactively?

To quote Luke Skywalker from fhe Last Jedi: “Impressive. Every word in that sentence was wrong.”

1. Overpriced is a matter of perspective.
2. Apple’s batteries are the same as those of every other major manufacturer, if not better.
3. Software degrades your spec only after years of use, when the battery becomes bad. A battery replacement restores the original speed.

10.2.1 throttled 6s/se
11.2 throttled 7

Why wait until 11.2 for 7 throttle?

Sounds like 8/X haven’t been throttled yet but they plan to in a later update

How many 7s do you know that are throttled? Not much, they are one year old at most and most batteries are still good. Why wait? Because it's not as simple as flipping the switch. Battery management system is different on these phones, batteries are most likely different, everything with phones is much more complex than most people think.

It throttles when the battery gets worn out to prevent shutdown. If you take care of your battery, you can go for years without throttling. And then you can replace the battery.

Do you know desktop CPUs do that too? As your cooling system gets less efficient due to wear and dust, the system gets more and more hot and the CPU throttles more and more to prevent shutdowns and damage. Replace the thermal paste, get new fans, clean the dust - and it’s back to normal.

Same with iPhones. What exactly is your problem here?

1) Apples profits speak for the cost price ratio.

2) I dispute that. Apple penny pinches ( see above).

3) Apple by their own admission started slowing down 6S phones last year, which at that point could only be a max of one year old and most in the wild were much newer.

So I'm guess looking at speed tests and benchmark scores doesn't matter anymore. The iPhone's CPU is now under the mercy of its sealed battery which degrades over time.

An iPhone 6s throttled down to 600 MHz or iPhone 3Gs speed. By 2019, your iPhone 8, 8 Plus, or X will party like it's 2009!

Apple are crooks. Plain and simple. No "apologists" accepted here.

I'm on board. Here's my note...

Dear Apple,

How dare you.

How could you slightly slow down my old phone during peak demand. You have deprived me of the simple joy of having my battery swell, or with some luck, even explode! Instead, you chose to delay tasks being completed by 0.0134 second during the time I needed you most. I wasted 12 seconds by the end of the day. A time I could have spend with my family. I could have also been enjoying the phone suddenly shutting off in the middle of me doing something. I would have never complained about that... It would have been so much better. This is unacceptable.

I will be returning this amazing device and will be moving to a rotary phone. Good day!

P.S: This was typed on a typewriter because the new MacBook Pro is just a joke, so I downgraded. I will telegraph you more details about that soon.

That will show'em!

It is clear we disagree on a fundamental level, so any further discussion is probably pointless. I guess you should really do what the OP suggests and return your phone. You should probably leave this "apologetic" community too, but that is up to you, obviously.

Get it swapped. by the time it degrades you are outside apples wart any way. a reputable guy in my town will do it for like $40. Maybe not from Apple but doesn't matter any way if the warranty is up! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Are you going to return every battery operated device you own because the batteries wear down? Including your car, motorcycle or boat? Just because Apple decided help people out with weak batteries is no reason to return your phone, then again I really don't care what you do.

Perfectly stated.

And not to mention, if Apple did the opposite, didn't tweak the operating system to help prolong the life of fading batteries. Then you'd have the same people screaming about how their phone charge only lasted 90 minutes as they went storming in anger off to a mall kiosk to get a new battery installed for $175. "Screw Apple! They could have fixed the situation with software for free!" would be the narrative.

Kindergarten. It's what we're dealing with here.

They don't mind their phones slowing down.... especially the hardcore iSheep. They will applaud it.

No...I will buy a new phone or replace my battery!

Seriously!? This is ridiculous. Replace your battery and keep your phone going. If the battery on your car was dying but your car used the battery a little more carefully to ensure it started your car longer while you continued to not get it replaced, you would probably be thrilled. Batteries are consumables...they will die. Replace it like all other batteries need to be and continue enjoying life. Stop getting stuck in the nonsense.

EXACTLY!!!!! Ugh! The only thing Apple did wrong was they didn’t come out and say that this is why their phones were slowed.
