I turn the iPhone X over to my wife tomorrow.

After a week of use, if I purchased it for my own personal device I would return it.

It’s a good device with nothing glaring wrong, but I don’t regard it as the better experience over my iPhone 8+.

I’m going to flat out say I think the iPhone 8+ is the better device despite the hardware having some perks with the X.

My wife will love it. I did not.

LCDs are indeed brighter because they beam a constant light throughout the screen. however, this prevents deep contrasts and a truer black; as well as being less battery efficient.
Make that less battery efficient if you’re viewing mainly dark coloured content and more efficient if you’re viewing primarily light coloured content...

1. Coming from an iPhone 7 Plus screen to the iPhone X screen is a downgrade, don't care what anyone says, everything is bigger on on my 7 Plus and 1080 resolution just fits everything nicely on the screen. The 1125 resolution on the iPhone X is just weird, especially watching youtube videos because everything out there is 1080p. Not to mention my 7 Plus is brighter and more cool compared to the X oled screen and I perfer the cooler color. I'll wait for the iPhone X Plus if Apple ever decides to release it.

2. My phone is always on my desk and with touch ID, I can easily unlock the phone without picking it up and take a quick glance at notifications with my 7 plus. I can't do that with the iPhone X, now I have to pick up the unit for face ID and swipe up, not convenient at all.

For paying $1200 w/ tax, I just wanted something that is better than my 7 Plus and I feel as though it's a step backwards for me due to the reasons above. If it works for you, that's great, I hope you continue enjoying your device, but this is definitely not for me. I really hope they release an iPhone X Plus with touch ID embedded into the screen.

EDIT 11/6/17: Yes, true tone was turned off on the X, and both brightness was turned to the max on both the Plus and X, the plus is brighter and cooler, the X was less bright and more warm/yellowish.

For people who doesn't believe I actually purchased one, here's my return receipt.

I totally agree. I don't buy phones on contract and for the money there isn't enough for me to keep it. I got mine and returned it the same day.

I think if your going to be coming from a plush model the X is not for you. The X is for the regular iPhone user who did not want to carry the large phablet. I am one of those people who did not want to carry the larger phablet. I am now carrying a phone that feels almost the same size as my old 7 yet I have more screen. So I do not think this was made for switchers from the plus if had adapted to the plus size. I could never make that work for my self. So I have an X. I am considering returning mine not due to size or screen but due to all the little rough edges like cold screen and cost vs reward over my iPhone 7 / 8 which is what I would get to replacement for the X. I could not get my SO to use this device she has an 8+ she has been on the plus size train for so long she would not want to use a phone one handed or carry something smaller. The chins they need to go and I think next year we will see that come to the plus size with an even larger more crazy screen which I think If you have a plus right now you should be starting to ramp up that hype for the true one and only iPad mini in your pocket which is coming out next year. I know my SO will be all over that phone. I am just not 100% sold that the X is ready for prime time. Then again the 6 was not ready for prime time when it dropped and we had growing pains. Apple Gen1 is always 90% not 100% gen2 is 100%++ so next year you plus users are going to get the benefits of us X users having carried this phone around for a year and apple seeing all the weak spots and patching them and making the screen larger. The battery life on the X from the 7 is and upgrade. The screen is an upgrade. The dual camera is an upgrade. If I had a 7+ none of this is an upgrade it is a side grade or downgrade in total screen size.

Ive posted this on a few other threads but here is my update should you care to read:

( *please note I'm not bashing the X. It really is an amazing piece of technology and we can all be certain millions of people will be over the moon with their purchase. It wasn't right for me and that's personal opinion. I would never discourage anyone from buying or keeping theirs.)

Apple have their display models with auto brightness off, brightness 100% and truetone on. I switched on auto brightness, switched off truetone to match mine as this is how I would use it daily.

15 floor models in my local store. Most were yellowish when tilted slightly which washed out the other colours = terrible. Some were like mine, a bit pink/yellow. some shifted to Blue and didn't look as bright as mine. Two looked fantastic and very uniform with minimum shift. These were the ones.

Because of these two models I considered going with my replacement but due to the stress of the day getting to the store, the agonising over the quality of mine for a week and the fact I'd be entering the panel lottery I decided to just return for refund. Two out of 16 phones in front of me does not make good odds. At least my replacement is freed up for another customer.

One of the store staff said "well there will be variances in displays". Really, you just said that?! All screens made by Samsung, all calibrated by Apple. Shouldn't they all be the same. He said this isn't how oled works and despite this being dangerous as an Apple employee to say at least he was honest and clearly I agree.

Back on the 7 plus.

No all displays should not be the same. This is only achieved when you calibrate the display to each other. This is why you can have two perfectly acceptable calibrated displays look slightly different. They need to be tuned to each other and to the dci standard. I have this when I run dual monitors and did photography. The displays will vary from unit to unit even calibrated. The calibration reduces the varrience but does not eliminate it. The only way ensure two look identical is to measure each against each other and find the common ground that is as close to rgb and dci as possible. I am not surprised by that at all.

tl;dr: nitpickers gonna nitpick

The X is quite simply amazing. If you‘re coming from a Plus and feel the screen is too small for you, just wait for the X Plus next year. Simple.

I don’t disagree with you I was just surprised an Apple employ didn’t try to spin my issues. I have seen many X displays and they were all different like every iPhone and iPad release before them. I was very much hoping the X with OLED was going to be the holy grail of iPhones but left wanting hence why I returned. Happy to report the Apple store was full of people grinning from ear to ear with their new x purchase.

Yeah the display lotto is real. Now on the laptops they make so few of them now they seem to be less prone to this lotto issue. iPads are the worst about it. I swear True Tone was constructed to cover up the lotto as a feature. I have had blue and pink shift iPad Air 2 all the time. So I fee your pain. Oled is not a magic bullet. This is why Samsung blows out the color you can’t see the shift of your blinded by the over saturation and red push. I went through no less than 5 lg 21.5 displays to get a accurate and calibratable display. So yeah the lotto keeps going. This is why low volume monitors that have paper chart certs are so expensive. Like nec pro displays.

[doublepost=1510478573][/doublepost]I also returned my X yesterday to my nearest Apple Store in London. The apple genius said they've had quite a few returns were people have swapped to the 8 plus which I did. I was upgrading from a 5s and wanted the huge plus sized screen. The X was really narrow about the same width as my son's 6s. Plus I hated the notch, couldn't access the X when I was in really sunny weather, hated the cropped screen or if you zoomed in the notch would just obscure the top of the video I watched. I tried so hard to like it i really did. So happy with the 8 plus and was so excited to find out you can use landscape on the Homescreen :) I didn't know you could do this. I got 9 hours yesterday on the 8 plus but only managed 6 on the X. Plus I saved myself over £200 :p

Coming from a 7 Plus, I’ve also experienced the same issues OP describes. The X screen dimensions remind me of an ultra wide desktop screen I’ve had for years that still feels somewhat unwieldy and awkward. The X screen feels like an elongated non Plus screen. I like that the X maximizes the screen:device ratio, but it misses some positives of the phablet feel you get from the Plus.

However, overall so far I prefer Face ID over Touch ID despite having to pick the device up occasionally when I otherwise wouldn’t have.

Probably the smartest thing for me to do would be to return this iPhone X and wait for the iPhone X Plus (seems likely next year).

On the other hand, without going into too many details, the iPhone X is otherwise just gorgeous and awesome. I’m going to spend next 10 days using it, then compare how the Plus feels.

To be honest, what I appreciate and what works trumps the size and other minor dislikes coming from a 7+

Already looking forward to the X plus

I should have been more clear, I was definitely talking about the aspect ratio of the unit.

Good point. The aspect ratio is 18:9 on the X vs 16:9 on the Plus. This means most movies and games will be scaled in the X as opposed to the Plus. Not a good thing. Apple placed an unograded oled screen in the X without consideration of meaningful screen ratio. As a result, you get a cut off image or black borders that actually makes the display less ideal compared to the Plus.

If you're not into watching movies or games, the X is fine. However, I gave to agree that coming from a Plus, the X display is a downgrade.

Your concern is valid. When apple said it was 5.8 I had assume the screen would be the same size as the plus. But now I put my iPhone x next to my fiancé's 7 plus and I can see the screen the difference. The plus is wider while the X is taller.

For me the X screen size is fine and sufficient. I have small hands so I find the X easier to hold. But if there's a iphone x coming out next year, I probably will go with the plus size.

Yeah I feel like there are too many iphone x haters since the release yesterday.

most likely the hater is because it's just something new and they're not used to it.

went from 7 plus to X and felt the same, only difference was it was more holdable due to the shorter width which is a joy.. even for a guy i felt the 7 plus was stretching my hand limit at some extent but that being said i think my needs have dwindled down a bit and wanting it more like a phone rather than a supercomputing device

I'm planning on returning my iPhone X today and revert back to my 7 Plus. How do I go about getting my carrier service back on my old phone?

If your on AT&T just pop the active sim out of the X and put it in your 7 Plus and your back in business.

I could tell it would be an issue for me before it came out and am still happy with the 8 Plus. The new learning curve for gestures and lack of a button was enough to turn me off to it. Glad for those who dig it and I don't want to take away from it though, maybe in another a year I'll be ready for the switch.

Basically my feeling right now with my 7+ and returning the X. It has more to do with software not being optimized and the screen size.

I watch a lot of video in bed, the X is simply a downgrade until the Plus version next year.

People want to call the 8+ old design, but like many have said. Its the perfected version of the 6 design language.

I returned mine and my wife's X we just couldn't justify the price. Now we are going with the AT&T BOGO deal and getting two iPhone 8 Plus' for less than what we would have been paying for one X (on AT&T Next 30).

If I could I would get the Gold 8+, so nice IMO. But I will keep my 7+.

Same exact feelings...as much as I want the latest Apple product (I upgrade every year) I find myself trying every which way to convince myself to like it. I have a 7 Plus as well and have also been through 2 different IPhone X's returned for various defects but your right for multimedia consumption the X is a downgrade. Using the X for the time I had it left me wanting more afterwards...which usually isn't the case for me and Apple products. I am wanting a new phone though and really don't see much sense upgrading to the 8 Plus. I am tempted by the Note 8 just for something totally different but still on the fence.

I tried the S8+ not long ago and returned it. Its a nice device but imessage and being able to text from my iPad are things I wont let go.
