At a risk of seeming stupid I am returning the Air today (because the screen is discoloured on one side) and rebuying a mini. In my heart the Air is too big, the large screen is nice but I don’t want to be moaning the device is too heavy in a few weeks time.

I could buy nothing but I like using Pigment with the pencil and I can’t do that on my 4.

You are not the only one struggling with this. I’ve made several posts since getting the Mini 5 last week that are all over the place - its great, I’m happy to replace my year old 10.5” Pro with it, to uh, maybe I kinda like the 10.5” more than I thought, I can keep both, no I can’t, that would be excessive, maybe the Mini is no longer for me, etc.

I still have both and about a week left of the 14 day return window.

Sent from this lovely Mini 5.

I say keep them both, why choose? That’s what I did. I have task I prefer on the 10.5 and task for my Mini. It might even keep your batteries from taking a beating, hence less charging. :D

Yep, sometimes tasks require different sizes, and if the tasks are important enough to you, it’s worth getting multiple sizes. That’s why I have a 12.9 mainly for drawing, and a mini mainly for e-reading. They both do a lot more but those are the most important tasks.

How about all 3? o_O Lol I’ve got the 11” , 12.9” , and just got the mini 5 and it looks like a keeper. Please send help.
If each size accomplishes a task important to you that the other sizes can’t accomplish nearly as well, then I say each earns its keep!

You guys are hilarious.
Is there one or two important tasks/scenarios you see yourself using an ipad for? If so, I’d get the ipad size that is most ideal for that and let everything else take a back seat.

Yes that’s what i’ve done, and for the majority of my tasks the mini wins hands down.

I can’t justify buying more than one iPad. I have a Mac and an IPhone as well. One iPad is more than enough. When I need or want a larger screen I’ll use my 13” Mac.

Perhaps I should clarify, the 10.5 Pro I already had when I bought the Mini last week. However if 1 iPad works for you that’s great.

That is not the voice of enabling. If you need a refresher, read Libby's posts. :p

Apple products are not about need. They are rewards to ourselves for having to put up with so much dysfunctional chaos in our lives, especially from those who feel compelled to equate self-worth with inanimate objects. Products like the iPad mini 5 bring a balance and completeness to our electronic lives. And in doing so, help us to be more productive, sanguine, acute, and fulfilled in only a way that an Apple product can.

I just need to throw more money at this problem to make it go away. Add a keyboard case to my 10.5” Pro to increase my usage of it in other ways. The Mini 5 can then fulfill the more casual needs and bedtime reading. Crisis averted!

Good call. I have been working to not make as many dumb Apple purchases any longer. iPhone is kind of different as it's paid monthly regardless, but for anything else - I am trying to make better decisions. Skipped Watch 4 and AirPods 2 and will likely hold onto my 11 inch Pro for an extra year also. The hardware is so good right now that it just doesn't make much sense. I wanted a mini because I like the form factor, but I have zero use for it. It'd just be another screen, which I need less of.
You know what’s the point of these incremental upgrades. After the hype is over it’s just a tech.

Yup. I just need my tech to do what I need it to. That’s why I don’t get in battles with the Android crew over features/specs or complain that Apple isn’t innovating. What we have right now is great, use it for what you need and be happy. There are more important things in life.

This^^

I can’t tell you how many times I have seen people lining up to argue over this stuff. Sometimes, I’ve been baited into this and forgetting the bigger picture. There are more important things in life and to get into a technology pissing contest. What matters is whether or not it is serving your needs for what you are using it for. Technology use is subjective, but not meant to be polarizing.

I definitely used to get into it with people, but I have learned to just take a step back and realize how dumb it is to argue about. Faster this, better camera that, feature this, feature that - hardware is great across so many tech companies today, it all just comes down to preference. Use what you like, respect others decisions to do the same, and move on.

I completely agree with this. I also think now, as it relates to corporate ethics, one has to decide which company they find the most ideal for things like privacy and the like. Not trying to derail this thread, but you’ve brought up many good points. Thanks for the reminders.

Back on the subject, at this point, I’m keeping my new mini. It’s awesome.

No fault of the device, just got the itch for it and now have regrets.

My 11" wins for sure.
What did you make of the display quality of the new Mini's Retina vs the Liquid Retina of the 11" Pro? I haven't had the chance to test a new Mini yet.

I've been trying to read up on the technical differences (aside from the Mini not having Pro Motion) but I don't really get if there is anything else that makes the Pro display better. They both have True Tone and P3 wide color gamut, and the Mini actually has higher PPI than the Pro (326 vs 264)...so is the "Liquid" part only about the rounded corners?

My dream machine would be a Mini Pro with an OLED display but since that doesn't exist I'm trying to find the next best thing. I prefer the size of the Mini but would go for the 11" Pro if I knew for sure that the display quality was better on it (again, that's aside from Pro Motion which doesn't matter so much to me).

The most important point for me is the blacks, for reading with black background or while watching movies.

Yes, as far as I know the Liquid Retina is just the rounded corners, as far as quality as you said the Mini has more PPI so images are more crisp but it’s not as smooth as the Pro since it’s missing Pro Motion.

If display quality is important to you, I would say the larger display alone will give you more satisfaction, and the more PPI in the Mini won’t make as big if a different as Pro Motion.
