My bar was set pretty low - if it didn't make me nauseous, I would keep it.
I did not buy it just for what it does now - I also bought it to see where it can go.

Where would you like to see it go?

SLAC (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center) was a national research laboratory run by the Dept. of Energy, not far from Stanford University. They generously allowed the Homebrew Computer Club access to their auditorium where meetings were held once a month in the evenings, after work. That's where a lot of the personal computing industry got started.

A funny story... Back then people used to exchange computer programs on paper tape after the meetings. SLAC got wind of that and said it had to stop, apparently because it was a government laboratory, and violated some rule. So.... people then drove a mile or two away after the meetings, around 9pm, to a gas station parking lot and would exchange tapes from the trunks of their cars. Apparently the police were called by someone thinking drug deals were going down. And all it was just computer nerds exchanging paper tape programs! :)

Oh wow, brings me back to the days when the chemistry department had an early comp in the basement and I wrote a program to say hello to my father (who was an early pioneer in computers and worked at digital) and sent it to him on paper tape. My reward was when i came home for Christmas one year and he was just getting into printers (for digital) he brought me in to learn how to PROGRAM in postscript to print out Christmas cards lol. BTW, my pedigree is long if not distinguished, my grandfather was one of those that literally made ENIAC, credited with being the first modern day digital computer. He did not design it, he was one of the engineers that contructed and maintained it with this new technology, vacuum tubes. He would bring parts of it home to show me.

Good times.

Yep I am an old fart, seen a lot, done a lot, and just really enjoying the AVP and what i can do with it now. Wish i could share that with my grandfather (and father). They would have loved it too. Pioneers. The AVP is just beginning. It’s not a polished product. But it does things no other device can at the level it does it. I laugh at those that say, oh but Apple didnt invent the tech and then reference several other devices that does this or that. What are you swapping headsets depending on what feature you want to use? LOL. None of them will give you the resolution of the AVP that makes everything but games really pop. I agree, you want twitch games, get a quest.

I really like this video. Great job.

i still have five more days (I ordered around 6 a.m. PST, so the avp arrived on the 7th) to decide, but I had my mother-in-law try guest mode today. She has early Alzheimers, and I wanted to determine whether she could successfully navigate (a remote operator function would be amazing for this purpose) the UI. It was very clumsy for her at first, but with a bit of practice she had little trouble.

The spatial video of our dog- who she adores - is really arguing against returning the avp. She was delighted and dazzled by it.

We can record memories, and she can immerse herself in those experiences. That alone is stimulating (we had a long discussion about the technology after she was done watching Fritz the chihuahua being adorable in 3D) and representative of the activities research has demonstrated to be of some non-trivial benefit in slowing dementia. But it leaves me wondering whether the technology might have actual clinical value for her, and feeling I need to at least give it a try.

So returning the avp, even knowing it’s possible to swap it for less expensive alternatives that can largely reproduce the spatial effect, seems now more like just a remote possibility. And certainly the cost, previously measured in terms of an entertaining indulgence, has been reframed and rendered trivial.

So, looks as though I’m keeping it.

That's a wonderful story - thanks for sharing it. I can see AVP helping others in the same situation possibly being able to reconnect with past events and bringing some much needed joy to their life.

It is so good, I'd write a letter to Tim Cook sharing your story. I bet you'd hear back from him thanking you.

I always thought this was a bad bet. The technology is just not there yet. Apple spent a lot of effort on this and this is going to died in 2 years time, just like google glasses did. Meanwhile they are years behind in AI and are going to struggle to get near what other companies are doing. This is the kind of vision Tim lacks that Steve had.
yep this most valuable trillion dollar company is going down hill!! Apple will not exist in 2 years, I’m with you man👍

I am clearly with you. Bought it, not returning it, loving exploring it. My bar was slightly higher, I needed to be able to wear it for at least a movie on the plane. I blew past that the first time I put mine on, 5 hours straight. Havent looked back.

Let’s just say the AVP form factor has a long way to go if someone like this is going to become a user..

(Please note her stylish Apple Watch however)

That photo is like 7 years old. Her face is Botox to the max now.

I must have missed the press release where she said she wouldn’t wear one. If there was no release, just how do you know what someone you more than likely dont know personally would do in private?!

I think people that are confident in themselves just won’t have the issues you infer.

Do you know any attractive women in real life?

I mean, come on. We don’t need to talk to Megan Fox to know that strapping a headset on is probably not on her to-do list. Pretending that she’s a potential customer is weak.

A helpful review. I find the dual loop band to be the most comfortable (2-3 hours without noticing) because I can loosen the straps and have it just rest on my head. The light shield version and the pad size matter quite a bit. If they fit correctly it is much more enjoyable. I am enjoying the panorama images I have been taking for years. I can finally see them in a realistic way. There is nothing quite so stunning as seeing a panorama of a scenic vista, with the information sign visible, where you can read the sign, and look around to see what it is talking about, right in your living room. If you have a set of panorama images in your photos library, you can drop into immersive mode, and swipe from one to the next, looking around in each spot. Kind of like a real-world Myst. Very enjoyable. I don't think you can take panoramas from the AppleVision, but the panoramas from the phone, work very well.

Dude, really? LOL. What is an affective woman? Does it help that a good friend of mine is a female astronaut? That she asked what my thoughts were on the AVP? Or is your definition of affective woman someone you will never know but only see on a screen? I never mentioned Megan Fox, but cool, you want to go there, then sure, I will say I have no more clue what Megan Fox will do in her private life than you do. Not everyone is adverse to trying new things. Too funny.

We won’t see any hard numbers unless Apple shares them, which is unlikely to happen. But there are certainly a substantial number of return proclamations here in the forums, on Reddit, and on other social media. The polls I’ve seen turn out around 30-40% returning. Those aren’t representative of course, but I think it’s clear that there are significantly more returns than on previous new Apple product introductions.

What will be more interesting to see, in my opinion, is when production capacity will catch up with demand, which will be apparent by monitoring the delivery times in the online store.

We have no idea whether Apple is making that to the maximum of their capacity. There have been credible reports that Apple is constraining supply artificially to generate the appearance of demand. Who knows whether they’re true or not? Apple really doesn’t share much with the outside world.

Got to demo it today at Apple. Honestly the only element that really impressed me was footage from a soccer and baseball game. I see the potential overall, but it is still way too early for most people to get excited for what it currently offers.
Yep same as gen 1 iPhone then ?

Please reference the credible report. Its all rumors and here say as far as i can tell.

While I am not buying currently and no nearby Apple Store all 2-3 hours away I am curious. I am nearsighted and wonder if one can send the prescription to zeiss and see if it can even be made for me before (if day comes) I order online given no near Apple Store? Can anyone who has prescription and ordered and received one comment on the experience ? Does Zeiss confirm they can make and then you order or they cannot and you know you are one of unlucky ones ;-)
