Perfomance difference between stock 5200rpm and Seagate 7200rpm

Just ran Xbench on the 7200rpm Seagate drive (after self-install on a stock MBP 15" SR). Here's the results:

Sequential Access
Uncached Write 4k blocks 47.99 MB/sec now 62.12 (29% faster)
Uncached Write 256k blocks 43.96 now 53.62 (22% faster)
Uncached Read 4k blocks 12.22 now 16.03 (31% faster)
Uncached Read 256k blocks 43.91 now 54.14 (23% faster)

Random Access
Uncached Write 4k blocks 1.15 now 0.81 (30% slower -- surprising!)
Uncached Write 256k blocks 20.56 now 27.3 (33% faster)
Uncached Read 4k blocks 0.43 now 0.63 (47% faster)
Uncached Read 256k blocks 17.14 now 24.04 (40% faster)

So some significant increases in speed, especially in random access -- with the one exception of the uncached 4k random write which actually did worse. Not sure if that's an anomaly or what.

Looks good.

That's what I was doing too! I decided it was much much cheaper to just buy one now and not wait! ;) Not to mention that I'm more productive at work again! (not constantly reloading my order status and this forum!)

My order status refreshing has gone down to about 5 times a day know, im proud of myself.

Hows it compare to the G5 when doing generic stuff ?
Im coming from a PowerBook so im going to notice the step up.

Good boy! ;)

It's not a huge jump, but my G5 dual has 4.5G of RAM so it's a pretty mean machine! The MBP does seem to be a bit faster though! Not to mention easier to lug around! haha! :D

It's certainly not a step backwards!

hey, let's think of it this way. the interest our unspent money is earning while we wait for shipping can be used to rationalize buying a 4GB ram kit. :) or other accessories. not to mention that the cost of said ram and accessories may drop during the wait as well!

also, i hope that they might iron out some kinks in their build reliability... has anyone seen what the prevalence is on the audio circuitry buzz issue?

and because i'm again too lazy to search for this info... does anyone know, if we get our long-awaited 15" MBPs and they have the yellowish bottom-third display problem, can we take them into a local apple store for replacement, or will we have to ship the whole thing back? i know what the answer probably is, but i thought i'd ask anyway.

Ive already bought a 500 GB external to connect to my Airport Extreme. Works really good BTW. Can't afford to spend much more.

Although 4GB of RAM is looking ever so tempting....................

Nifty, Zifty. Did the Apple guy install it for you or did you do it on your own? Was it tricky?

Oh, I just saw your post on the previous page. Sorry about that. Ignore me.

Boy I lose my internet service for one day and some of you go and desert ship. Whatever happened to one for all and all for one? Congrats LuvAussies, I hope you luv your new machine and are still having fun with it. :) Is there anyone out there like me who hasn't even seen one of the new machines? As I posted before there are absolutely none in my state, let alone my city. Maybe if I could just look at one, it might make the wait more bearable. Of course there is the distinct possibility that it might make the wait even more difficult. I think I am going to try and wait it out and hope I get one sweet, sweet computer with no PROBLEMS! Besides it is getting very close to when the first one (koops) should ship, right? And if it ships on the 3rd, koops can tell us that it was well worth the wait. With all that said, the 18th does seem like a long ways off...

I love it!

Be careful, seeing one in person might make you not want to wait any longer! ;) Hang in there, I am weak, what can I say! (But I'm having fun!)

does anybody know if this has happened before?? that apple has put a delayed shipdate this extreme on a mac with an upgraded component? And if so, is there any truth to the apple customer service reps who try to give me hope by saying that "it could ship earlier?".

Oh, and maybe another way for us to kill time is for people to list what they've bought (or plan to buy) for their new toy when it finally arrives? this is going to be my first mac AND my first laptop so i've quite a shopping list..

I have no specific models yet but i'm going for:
- 500gb external HD (definitely w firewire 800)
- some nice external bodycase so i can slip into my messenger bag or backpack
- wireless mouse (was thinking of the mighty mouse but ppl keep talking about going logitech)
- a longer dvi cable so i can hook it up to my samsung 32' lcd tv/monitor
- wireless router
- sleeping pills (so i can drug myself into getting some sleep and not using it all night long) :D

Sounds interesting, but I didn't understand much of it. Are you suggesting I can "tweak down" the color gamut on a glosssy screen to get "true color" like the matte screen? Can you describe a "smaller color gamut" in terms of the color profiling UI?

It's not that complicated. You just calibrate your monitor preferably with a hardware device like a Huey or Eye One, the result is a color profile that describes your monitor's color "gamut" or range. Based on this profile info for e.g. Photoshop can simulate another color gamut based on the color profile in the pictures. Also there's the Proof Colors menu item, where you can simulate printing without actually converting an RGB pic to CMYK. The key is the hardware calibration, squinting eyes just doesn't work :)

A hardware device? That sounds expensive or, at the very least, like something I don't have or know where to get. Where does one get such a thing and how much should it cost? Also, does it have any other uses?

Couldn't wait for the 15'' 7200rpm

So, I bought the 17'' 7200rpm MBP instead. I was torn between the extra 1.5 pounds and size versus the *amazing* hi-def screen and my super-fast hd now. I ordered the 17'' on 6/15 and it arrived on 6/18. I am still a little mystified that the 17'' could ship with the 7200rpm drive so quickly, but the 15'' still has such a long wait.

My initial report is that the new drive is noticeably faster (no benchmarks, just compiling the same code as before but getting results about five times faster). I love it! No regrets about not being patient and shelling out for the 17''!

regarding accessories, i'm pretty happy with my current setup, but do have a wish list: my external display is a bit cramped for watching movies (and i have no tv), so i think about getting a larger one, but i wonder when LED-backlit displays will come down in price? it seems there are very few models available. i hope that their use in laptops will jump-start that progress. i also love my expert mouse trackball, but if they ever made a bluetooth version, that would be awesome.

i have an airport express/airtunes unit that i only beam music to occasionally, but if the new MBPs do indeed have buzz issues with the audio circuitry, i may use it regularly. i'm kind of hoping that having a faster processor might minimize some of the delay (wishful thinking).

with my hot little pb g4, i keep it resting on marble slabs that i swap out when it gets hot (marble can absorb a lot of heat, which is why it generally feels cool to the touch). i'm hoping i won't need them for my new MBP, but it sounds like i probably will.

mine should ship in a month and a day... where's the "sigh" emoticon?

Well, I was good luck for ya'll, cuz now you don't get a 4-6 week delay for the 7200rpm option, it stays at 5-7 days! Coolio for ya'll! Oh well for me, I'm having fun and so far I haven't noticed anything being slow.

So they should start shipping any day! Yahoo!

Interesting. I wasn't aware that it used to show 4-6 weeks before purchasing. I wonder if it did on the first day ...

Still shows July 18 on my order status.

Still says 4-6 weeks on the UK store, then again maybe US orders are getting priority shipping b4 others
