Thanks! When you've been a Windows/DOS user for the past 15 years, you get pretty good at upgrading things every few months! :) Hopefully my upgrade skills can be tucked away for a good long time after making my switch to a Mac.

I've done a lot of upgrades (all of my upgrades) before, but on desktops and towers. And watching the video of popping open the laptop just looks too stressful!

If you can let us know ASAP tomorrow, I might just go this same route and see if they have the 15" in stock at my Apple Store!

Just ask

Any advice on how to ask the Apple store if they would do this for me?

I asked them when I was buying the standard machine this morning at the store. The guy helping me asked a genius beside him at the counter and he told me just to come in tomorrow once I have the drive and they'll take it in the backroom and do the upgrade. No appointment is necessary, at least at the Apple store I go to.

I called both my local Apple stores (Pittsburgh) and they both told me that they will not perform a hard drive upgrade for a fee other than a replacement for a problem. One store went on to say that even if I took it to a certified Apple reseller/service center that the warranty would still be voided. The other store actually referred me to a local Apple service center to do it. I called them (Macoutfitters) and they said they would do it under warranty (except the new drive obviously) for $55. So I guess this option seems to vary from place to place.

That's what my apple genius told me. I guess apple doesn't do hard drive replacements.

Cardsdoc, I can see them opting not to do the service, but how can the warranty vary from store to store? Maybe that was their way of saying they won't do it because they don't want to be responsible because of the warranty.

Also, you configured the same machine as mine.

Same here, my Apple Store won't do it either, but they said I could find a place that does. Who knows, I might be able to live with the 5400rpm!

I brought a stock one home just now! :D Yes, I was weak....

I think that person at that particular store just didn't know what he was talking about.

Yeah, I couldn't wait until 8/6 either, called them up and changed back to 5400rpm. Should have it next week.:D

Those words are horrible, your right, but you could hold onto the hope that,

- apple may fix initial teething problems reported by some users
- you'll have a macbook pro with the faster hardrive that will probably beocme stanard in the next revision and so won't be so obsolete
- Form what I have heard, if it is the seagate momentus, its a very good hardrive looking at the benchmarks, so the decision is yours but I'm going to hold out! .. otherwise I would have got a 54000rpm one about 3 weeks ago!! It would be nice to have one but good things come ot those who wait!

Im sticking it out with you koops for all the above reasons, still a pain mind. My PowerBook will have to get my attention for another couple of weeks.

Another reason I'm thinking about canceling my order is that I'm reconsidering the glossy screen I ordered. What was I thinking?!?

I ordered the matte, put its personal preference. The colors do look more saturated on the glossy ones, just not my thing.

Its down to what your using it for, if you need true color representation (professional photo editing etc) then get the matte. If your using as a family computer then the glossy is good as everything looks so nice.
