I'm afraid I have some bad news from Fujitsu! They just emailed me saying those drives won't be available until early August! Even to Apple!!!! They said that could change and recommended I check back next month. I'll check back in a week or two.

Sorry to pass that on, but if Apple doesn't start putting those Seagate drives in the 15" ones, they're gonna have a lot of unhappy customers!

Damn, thats not good news.

;) I'm a girl I'm a girl!

Impossible! There are no girls on the internet!

Apparently it's still possible they'll receive some next month, so I doubt they will change shipping dates until they get closer. And who knows, maybe they'll get some sooner, or use Seagate drives instead.

This is all speculation, I have no kind of confirmation that this is the drive they planned on using.

Yes it is all speculation, but it sure does drive a person crazy, of course in my case I may not have had far to go! I guess we won't know anything for sure until someone actually has one that ships, but at least this way we can all commiserate together. And then be happy (or jealous) for the one who gets one first. Which by the way won't be me because I truly do live off the beaten path.

Yep! This forum can help us maintain our insanity! :D

Wow, really?! You were able to get that kind of information from them, that's amazing! So they think they are supposed to receive them early next month, although Fujitsu says that's changed to early August, so who knows. Only 6-8 more weeks of waiting to find out!

 I should have asked them what drive was shipping in 15in. So we would know for sure but it slipped my mind. He did not tell me that the Fujitsu was being received on the July 5 - 18th. He just said the hard drive in the 15 in. should be received between the dates.

I'm just amazed you got that much information out of them, whenever I call they play totally dumb and just try to tell me it's my customization that's delaying the shipment. PALEESE!

Well I like your dates much better, so I'll try to be more optimistic! If I wasn't worried about the warranty I'd just do the upgrade myself!

The fourth call is a charm.

I don't think I've read it anywhere on this forum; but why does everybody think it will be a Fujitsu drive?

Mainly because the stock drive in the 15" is a Fujitsu, and we know the 7200 version of this drive is not available yet.

A few questions

1. Any particular reason they're are using Fujitsu instead of Seagates that are already readily available?

2. Do these new drives feature PMR technology?

3. A 200GB 7200 RPM with 16MB is slated to be shipping pretty soon and rumors are it will outperform the current 160GB drives, which begs the question is it really worth it waiting for this?. Maybe folks should just get the 160GB 5400 RPM version and upgrade the HDD in feature. Heck i hear a 300GB drive is slated to ship in 28 days from Fujitsu.

Any one got any more depressing news on the hard drive fiasco ?

Hopefully we'll get a nice surprise of some GOOD news soon! I'm trying to be optimistic!

The good news is that if ours are delayed, maybe some of the problems the first batches have will be fixed in ours!

Optimism at its finest :D

Surly they can just shove the ones from the 17 inch in there ....... please

Couldn't wait any longer

Just ordered a Seagate 7200rpm 160GB and 4GB upgrade from Other World Computing and am having it shipped priority overnight. Now on my way to the local Apple Store to pick up the stock configured machine and have fun looking at it until 10:30am tomorrow morning when the real fun begins!

You're brave cracking open a brand new machine! I'm use to doing upgrades myself, but I've never had a laptop before and it looks too scary while it's still under warranty! Good luck!

The hard drive was $197.99. The 4GB upgrade was $219. With overnight shipping that comes to $436.09.

Could have saved on the machine and not paid sales tax by getting it on Amazon, but I'm going out of town tomorrow afternoon and was worried it wouldn't arrive before I had to leave since Amazon won't let you pick priority overnight versus standard overnight.

Also spent $12.90 at Home Depot to pick up the small screwdrivers and torx screwdriver.

The grand total, including sales tax: $3147.91
My original total via the Apple Store online: $3774.24
Grand total savings of the DIY approach: $626.33 (add the value of your sanity by getting it now versus a month from now)

My local Apple Store said they would install the hard drive for me for only $30, so I might have them do it just to preserve the warranty. Although, there is a great "how to upgrade your mbp hd" on the web that I was going to try if I did do it myself. I've read in other forums that Apple doesn't void your warranty if you upgrade your HD yourself -- just as long as you don't mess anything else up doing it. So I'm pretty confident that as long as I can upgrade it on my own, my warranty will still be valid for any future, non-hard drive related issues down the road. Even so, I'm happy to pay $30 for Apple to do it (assuming they will considering it's not "their" drive that I bought from them).

Once I've got it upgraded, I'll post back to let everyone know if this is a viable route or not.. Or if I ended up with a nice Apple branded paperweight in the process. :)

Upgrades

You're brave cracking open a brand new machine! I'm use to doing upgrades myself, but I've never had a laptop before and it looks too scary while it's still under warranty! Good luck!

Thanks! When you've been a Windows/DOS user for the past 15 years, you get pretty good at upgrading things every few months! :) Hopefully my upgrade skills can be tucked away for a good long time after making my switch to a Mac.

It's funny that we can buy our own and have them do it for $30, but we can't get them to do it via our orders! ;)

$30 for them to do it is well worth saving the stress! I might have to consider this route if we don't get good news soon!
