I can't believe no one has one yet.
Nope, nobody.
I can't believe no one has one yet.
anyone else suspect that the real reason for the delay is to convince people to buy the pricier 17" that has the older, non-LED display? perhaps if they have a limited supply of the 7200rpm drives, they want to use them to push these high profit-margin units. well tough luck, apple!15" is already almost too big!
I think it's more likely that the 17" and 15" are manufactured in 2 completely different plants -- probably two different countries even. And the 17" plant has the 7200 rpm drives and the 15" doesn't and is waiting on a big shipment of them to arrive.

Could be, but apple knows that the 15 inch models would sell more than the 17 inch so you would think they would get the first batch. Im more inclined to think its a different hard drive in the 15 inch.

why would such a shipment take 4-6 weeks?
i think either it's a different drive (as speculated--hopefully maybe the fujitsu with perpendicular recording?) or else with a limited supply they are trying to get people to switch over to the 17".
Well I went to the Apple store and the 15" there had a Fujitsu MHW2160BH (5400rpm) drive. I think they're going with the Fujitsu 7200rpm drive ( MHW2160BJ - It has the perpendicular recording.) for the 15" ones, but they seem to be out of stock so far.
i paid apple for the 4G of ram and 7200 rpm. i can get the ram and hard drive from other companies... is it worth to buy all that from apple? it's surely cheaper from http://www.macservice.com/macbookpro.html
any suggestions?
don't buy extra ram from apple. get it from OWC or somebody--it's easy to install yourself.
only attempt to replace the hard drive yourself if you are very savvy and have the proper tools (google around for a guide on how it's done). you will void your warrantee and it's not easy. some say you won't void the warrantee as long as you leave no trace of your work, but if they suspect anything it's easy for an apple rep to find out what drive your computer shipped with.
my 7200 RPM 17" Shipped today after 2 days wait.
The money was taken from the account ?
Interesting.... don't apple do this shortly before it ships ?

ok, so i was confused. i thought maybe the reason on the wait for the 15" 7200 was to take advantage of perpendicular recording in the fujitsu MHW2160BJ. but the seagate momentus ST9160823AS (which was confirmed to be in the 17" 7200) is perpendicular already. according to the specs i've found, the two drives are pretty much exactly the same size, and the same in other parameters as well. so why do we think the 15" MBPs are getting a different drive than the 17"? and, is there something else about the new fujitsu that's different besides it not being available?
Everything I've found shows they're almost identical too. I know the 5400rpm drive in the 15" is a Fuji, so it only makes sense that the delay is the wait for the 7200rpm Fuji. Maybe they have a contract with Fuji so they're waiting for them. Just a theory!
I think this the only reason for such a big delay. It is a pity as Momentus are fantastic HDs. I have it in my MB.
I decided to put it in my MBP too, keeping the original drive in an external case (but I have a Premium reseller with an official assistance center, don't open the MBP by yourself).
I emailed span.com about this Fuji drive, all they said was, "these are not released yet." I doubt Apple has received any yet, but the fact that a few people can't cancel their orders leads me to believe that Apple is expecting some soon!
Apple would have done well to keep the 100GB 7200rpm HD they had as a BTO. I would have gone for that as speed is more of an issue that capacity for me.
The 7200 RPM on its own doesn't make it fast. The 100 GB ones are low density harddisk. They read much less data per rotation than a high density harddisk, and they get full much quicker and a full harddisk is slower than a half empty one. All in all, a 5400 RPM high density harddisk will easily beat it in speed.
I have the impression that the harddisks Apple is waiting for are the first high density, high RPM disks on the market. That's why they are expensive and that's why you have to wait for them. (Like a Core Duo 2 GHz easily beats a P4 at 3 GHz. The GHz alone doesn't do it. Now a Core Duo at 3 GHz, _that_ is fast).
