Just finished a half marathon where I switched from the Nike I’ve used lately to the build in today. It’s just an amazing difference and it was dead on with distance and way faster to respond than Nike’s and .. IT DIDN’T CRASH! Nike I’m gonna be back when you have worked out your ****

Which app did you use?

I WANT to switch to the built-in workout app... but I won't do it until it starts tracking my stats for me. I want to know my average pace each month, my PR for all the different race intervals, etc. Don't understand why Apple hasn't implemented that yet!!!

Can’t you just pull the data into strava or something like that?

I'm trying to find an app that will track your indoor runs. (treadmill).

I tried runkeeper, runtastic both require you enter the mileage from the treadmill! The only one so far that can track the mileage automatically is the nike run club.

But I'm not keen on the nike run club coaching for my training of a half marathon.

Anyone know of a decent app that will track your milage automatically when on the tread mill?
I thought the built in app would do indoor runs once you calibrated it with a 20 minute outdoor run.

The built in app does this - Workouts

Yea I use RunGap to other apps for the PR tracking etc. Good workflow for me.

The build in- nothing beats it (except for long time data comparison

And that’s part of the reason I’m even giving Nike second chances at all

Interesting - ran a casual 20 miles last weekend and a marathon yesterday. In both cases, I had Apple Watch 2 on left wrist and Garmin 235 on right. Ran the 20 miles with someone who had my iPhone in their rucksack, so I'm not sure which GPS was used, but looking at battery life, I reckon I must have been close enough to the phone to use its GPS. For the marathon, the phone was turned off and in the baggage area. Anyway, in both cases, the built in running app disagreed with the Garmin by about a kilometre. Yesterday, Garmin had 42.3km and watch had 43.43 and it translated to a Garmin pace of 5:23 and a watch pace of 5:15.

I had been (ambitious last minute decision) aiming for a 3:30, convenient 5:00km pace which I maintained for a lot of the way. If I had been serious about getting to the 3:30 time and solely reliant on the watch, I would have missed by 2 or 3 minutes.

I'll use my apple watch for regular, casual runs. But, I'm thinking that for events or anything where I'm going to be sticking to a pace, I'll keep the Garmin.

Sounds a bit weird - Ran three marathons with my S3 this year - two of them with the build in app and one with Nike - the one with the Nike app crashed and screwed me over, but the two build ind were very precise.

Especially the last one I did October 1st - that were literally exactly on point with the distance markers - loved it

I wonder whether its the watchOS somewhere. I think it was ok in the marathon I did in May. But, of course, I've updated since then.

Supposedly it does but I've found it to be unreliable. Here's an example of a run on the S3 LTE with the built-in workouts app that I pushed to Strava using RunGap.

https://www.strava.com/activities/1197475167

If you switch on the cadence graph, you'll see the first mile and a half is a mess, then it seems to start tracking somewhat accurately. I get this behavior consistently with the built-in app. Is it the workout app's fault, or RunGap, or do I have a bad watch - impossible to say until/if the Activity app on the phone starts to show cadence. So mostly I'm back to using Strava directly on the watch, as I'd rather have no data than bad data.

You don't have a bad watch. Or we both do. I've found same problem with S3 cellular. Just today I used ismoothrun for the first time. Enjoyed getting nice cadence data as well as the two screens with all the data I want while running. GPS track was dead on for where I ran also.

Good to know, thanks. Sounds like ismoothrun (which I’ve not tried yet) for road runs/interval workouts and WorkOutDoors by @cfc on the trails might be the killer combo we’re all looking for.

I've been corresponding with Ian about Workoutdoors. I will soon be a beta tester. I've sent him some issues from some simple testing. I would like to see an option to show the "Info" page with all the right stats update in real time and be an alternative during runs/walks. His app is currently map focused and does a brilliant job with the map. Even using now workout and just the maps (OpenStreetMap based) is very handy. He is the most responsive developer I've seen with quick, lengthy, informative replies. He'll take that app a long way. Looking forward to it.

Today I achieved a record of crashes with nike run club - about 15:
- 3 before start
- 3 after pausing
- about 10 to at least pause and end the run
So after the Guided Run update I had like 5-6 runs, total of 40 crashes.

Sounds like my last couple of runs before jumping back to the build in.

Nike please focus less on new features and more in just fixing the train-crash of an app

Pff, that does not sound so well :(. It is a shame that Apple advertises with sports & Nike (even a Nike version that I bought :p), but the Nike app does everything except working flawless... Maybe you can try Runkeeper?!

I've been thinking about this since I bought the watch :p
But the problem is trivial: I tracked so many runs that I want to beat the 10k km threshold. If I'd had like 2-3k km, then I would immediately changed to Workouts app/Strava. :(

Hi,

I have a couple of questions and didn't want to start another thread, so hope someone can kindly help me here.

1) My runs appear to be shorter once uploaded to Health. Usually around 10% less. I have noticed this when I have uploaded with my Garmin or AW. I use Strava for both of these.

2) My HR doesn't track in the run throughout on the AW. A few km may read nothing (straight line) and then it may jump and record for another km, before going dead again. The HR sensor works fine whilst resting, sleeping, daily, etc.

Well today there is a fresh Nike app in the App Store. Mainly for iPhone X UI but it also states bug fixes etc. under the Apple Watch. Sounds like we need to try it out? Maybe they fixed something that broke on 4.1

I experience the second issue with the in built heart rate monitor. Wrist or arm based sensors just don’t work for me when I exercise. I tried a scosche rhythm too with similar results. My watch also reads fine throughout the day, it just looses my pulse when I workout.

You could try tightening the band a little but failing that you might need to invest in a chest strap for exercising.

Thanks for your reply. I usually wear a Garmin and the HR sensor on that is fine. Not as good as a chest HR strap, but close enough. I was merely testing the AW to see if I could run with it at times, but this seems like a bit if a deal breaker as I don't like chest straps much (used one for 2 years and had enough).

The run tracks fine, just a little annoying that it sometimes falls short on the health app.

For example, I did a 7.2km run yesterday, but my total walking + running distance is 4.7km. Exercise "minutes" are okay, though.

I am really trying to like the health app, but this isn't proving to be easy...

With regards to the HR, definitely try wearing the strap (if it's one with a button) one hole tighter. If it's a valor strap, try tightening it up. When I run, I need to wear my watch 1 hole higher than I do the rest of the time in order to get a solid HR Reading, but once I do, it's been solid.

As far as the run lengths go, it sounds like the issue is something with the Heath app, as (if I'm reading your post correctly) it happens when you use either your garmin watch or your Apple Watch, through the Strava app. I've only used Strava one time so far & the distance has been right on, but you may want to try running once with another app (maybe the built in workouts app) to see if the issue is with Strava or the health app. One thing I did notice about Strava app on apple watch was that it's very sensitive to pausing. Every time I looked at my watch, it paused my run. Not sure if that's your issue, but definitely worth trying another app to at least rule it out.

Went for a quick run tonight after updating the NRC app. App crashed immediately the first time I opened it, but it was fine after that. I think the UI was also a bit more responsive...

That’s encouraging. Are you using an Apple Watch Series 2?

Thank-you. I also noticed that if I have auto-pause on my runs, it is slightly sensitive, which may be a problem for slower runners. Not sure, but it seems like anything slower than 7/min/km results in a pause, but I have no idea. I don't think that was the issue, as it has also under-reported my Garmin watch runs.

I have been using Strava for many years now to record both running and cycling, so cannot use the fitness app on the AW as it doesn't upload to Strava.
