I was commenting on the loyalty of Samsung users in this case only because I have difficulty believing that anyone can't see this Note stylus situation as a clear design flaw. If it is not a design flaw, then Samsung purposely designed the stylus to fit both ways, despite the damage? And yet the opinion of Samsung Note users that I've read in the wake of this stylus news is siding 90%+ on user error. Now that's brand loyalty!

Well I saw a reviewer who tested this say that Samsung was fixing it for him under warranty, so they should do it for others as well. So that's good news. :)

It's not so much siding with Samsung as it is siding against stupidity.

I understand most won't make this mistake but in moments of lapses I can see this happening. Enough so that reviewers like Dave lee/Austin Evans make a point about it. Don't design the stylus like it is.

Remember these are the same fanboys that mocked apple for the iPhone issue. That was a problem, but easily fixable with a free case. This is a major design flaw that isn't really fixable without a recall and replace of every phone out there.

Both situations bad, both written off at first by the companies as "user error" but Apple actually turned around and "fixed it".

Not quite the same thing. Your phone is a communication device. If you can't communicate with it then it is useless. Not to mention if you needed to use it in an emergency and it did not work. The pen issue affects such a small percentage of people. Then the phone functions as intended. You can still use the pen and you can still use your phone to make receive calls. So no not the same thing at all tbh.

Same reason you can't blame it on design if someone doesn't know the muzzle end of a gun. Those people shouldn't own a gun and their phone doesn't have pen option.

Does a gun allow bullets to be loaded backwards and break the gun? If so its a design flaw, just like the note 5 and iPhone 4.

The main problem with the antenna thing had to do with holding sideways which isn't the way it is held while calling someone. Yes. It was a design flaw but one apple fixed by giving free cases and with a later redesign. But it really wasn't a huge deal. Where as the note issue also affects everyone that has that phone that put the pen in upside down and kills a major feature of the phone.

If you put the poop back in and develop health problems is it your body's fault or your fault?

Do people mistakenly put feces back in their body? Backwards at that? You think people mistakenly putting in a stylus backwards and breaking the phone due to the design even allowing it to happen is akin to u putting feces back in your body? Backwards too?

We've had some odd examples in this thread but I don't think there is any wood left at the bottom of the barrel any more. Human excrement being used to explain the fault in a phones stylus design is beyond poor and worryingly so.

No dude you didn't have hold it wrong to lose service. I had the iPhone 4 on release day. If I held it in a normal fashion I lost service. There is enough video evidence of this from back in the day to prove what I am saying. So holding an iPhone 4 in a normal fashion rendered it useless fur what it was made for. Putting a stylus in backward is not how it was designed. In fact one end is blunt and goes in naturally based on the way the stylus is held. The wrong end is SHARP and not in a natural way to hold the stylus. Two entirely different things. You can put the stylus in backward. Pull it back out and the phone works as normally. iPhone 4 design flaw rendered the phone useless.

Ah yes, the old ’you're holding it wrong' was very funny and typical of Apple. Blame the users and not us. Yes they fixed it by giving a free bumper which worked really well for the people that didn't want to use a case or bumper.

As for the Note 5 stylus, yes it is pretty bad design but unlike with the iPhone all you have to do is use the phone normally.

Don't mix up .556 and .223 in an AR unless you have the correct size barrel on the gun or you might get a surprise. Not a design flaw, just like the Note 5 you just need to use a little common sense and be aware. It is your responsibility to always know the types of ammunition suited for safe and responsible use and just the same it's up to you to know how to put a stylus away.

AGain, my E85 gasoline example is yet another everyday common sense issue. The pump will fit in my S4 but I'm in for a bad day if I fill the tank with E85 and don't have the proper fuel pump, injectors to handle the flow needed and combined with and ECU in the car that isn't tuned for E85, that's goign to be one expensive tank of gas I put in by MISTAKE.

A common house hold issue is putting a larger wattage bulb into a lamp that isn't designed for it. My nieghbor just did that and ruined her light figure due to it melting. Thankfully no fire.

From 4 pages back, and still, no one can stick to the topic. Gas, guns, lightbulbs, poop. Not the same comparison. It is silly to keep going there.

Focus on the topic.....it is an easy mistake that results in damaging a very expensive premium device. It would have made sense for the Samsung engineer team to design as they did in the last 4 generations and every other stylus design out there, and perhaps prevent this from causing damage.

But nope, it goes right from there to a freight training hitting a bum or something. Just wait.

It's completely appropriate. Go wire an outlet in backwards with the hot wire on the nuetral side and let me know how that works out for you in the long run. Especially when changing the bulb. I mean the wires fit in backwards just fine and the light will still power on.

No one is trying to rewire the inside of the phone. Not the same thing.

No they are just putting the stylus in backwards. I've seen plenty of people put an outet or light switch in backwards. I've also seen people connect the opposite wires on a car battery too. Go try that and let us know how that works out too. Just a simple battery replacement gone wrong right?

Simple common every day things that go wrong when done backwards or incorrectly. I've mentioned them before but look around in parkinglots and notice how many sport sedans have an owner that improperly rotated their directional tires wrong. Backwards. I see it a lot but then I know what I'm looking for I guess.

Most consumers aren't replacing light switches or car batteries several times a day. That is why mechanics and electricians make the big bucks. And despite that, it is clearly marked (red/black, black/white) how these should go.

Phone batteries, which is I guess a valid comparison, might be able to go in backwards. But guess what, it just won't work. It doesn't break the phone.

Yup, I had the iPhone 4 too and just touching that spot made me lose connection in my house.

The difference is that with the iPhone 4 I HAD to use a case to get the phone to work properly, where as my note I just have to not put the stylus in backwards.

You don't think there are consumers everywhere replacing light switches and wall switches? It's actually one of the most basic simple and easy home fixes. Switches are like $.50 to $2ea too. Think again. Car batteries are pretty easy too. I see the point you're trying to make, but the facts still stand that as plain as black, red, white and green wires are so is the pointy end of a stylus.

So please, if you can't put the stylus of a Note 5 away correctly, do NOT attempt to replace a light switch or car battery, no matter how simple it is. Don't rotate your tires and please don't fill up your own car with gas. Attempt the light bulb of a table lamp ONLY if you can actually read and stick to the proper wattage too.

Phone batteries, which is I guess a valid comparison, might be able to go in backwards. But guess what, it just won't work. It doesn't break the phone.

I wonder how many people drink slushies with the spoon end of those funny straws in their mouths? But hey, you're right, it won't cause them to spill anything.

You have to be an electrician and have installations signed off by an authorised body. Your average joe can own a phone and put a stylus in backwards.

Just about anything can be stated as being stupid but that isn't the debate here. Putting the stylus in the wrong way is a stupid thing to do but there are measures that could be taken at a design level to prevent it. It's a small amendment to the design because let's face it, human beings are stupid by nature. It's a bit like asking why they put air bags in cars? The simple solution is not to crash but people do so manufacturers employ measures through design to combat issues. The stylus could have had a tapered tip or a pin that only allowed it to only be inserted one way. Simple, cheap, effective design.

I just don't know why this can't just be laughed off. We've got nothing to actually loose here. :)
