Can’t answer the question.

Do you think it’s a good a idea for Samsung to increase note 9 prices?

As far as logic is concerned, the Galaxy S or Galaxy Note, should always cost more than the equivalent iPhone. The hardware dictates it. I don't get into the bs touch feely reasons companies try to sell me. I look at the facts, the hardware. You see how I can easily answer your question? Yet for some reason, you have no answer to mine. Way to have some substance behind your posts. BTW, don't bother to answer my question at this point, you're first response (no response) says it all.

Regardless of them being iPhones or not, if they're making a big deal about the Note 9 having a huge battery then why did they give the N8 a relatively small one? They are somewhat slagging their own 11 month old phone off in those ads.

I think it was because of the note 7 they had to play it safe. They didn’t want to take any risks by putting a bigger battery in. Now they must feel confident enough to do it.

So you believe Samsung should increase galaxy note 9 prices compared to the note 8....because it should cost more than the iPhone?

Ok .

And the customers that bought it.

Not seeing it. A battery is a battery and many companies use larger ones. I would have been happier for them to drop wireless charging or even fast charging if they were that worried. Now I don't subscribe to the N8 battery being 'too small' but I take issue with Samsung advertising how great the N9 battery is. They should have put it in the N8 if it is sooo necessary.

That makes perfect sense to me. They also want to keep up with the competition. Huawei is putting 4000 mAh batteries in some of their flagship phones.

But remember the note 8 was the first note since the 7. They wanted it to be perfect as in not having any faults/issues because the note line was under the scrutiny of the world. So they probably played a it safe. Doing something they were 110% sure would work and have no issues.

The technology might not have been ready last year when note 8 came out.

The tech was ready for Huawei...

My thoughts too.....Samsung had a mis-step with the battery tech in the Note 7 and it cost them 100s of millions of $$$. They are a little gun shy at this point of pushing the limits of battery tech imho.
Maybe they feel ready to take that risk with the Note 9 now that their image has moved past that disaster.
I think they played it safe with the Note 8 and S9 batteries. We might see bigger batteries going forward.

Actually more like billions... last estimate was 10 billion worth of sales.

i can't wait for N9. really excited about this. massive built in storage + memory card for additional, AND headphone jack plus other innovations.
It should be a beast of a phone! Base storage at 128GB is setting a new standard a lot of others will soon follow. Then of course....SD Card and headphone jack and S-Pen. No one else can touch the functionality of the Note series of phones.

Galaxy Note is the only device worth paying the premium price but only if Samsung continue the tradition of integrating features for professional. That means meaningful features such as Linux and Windows 10 Dex integration so I can just leave a dock at work and home office while reducing the number of devices.

It does sound good. Waiting for the unpacked event. I could get it...

From what I understand it's a fairly niche market compared to their regular line up. I was just reading an article today where Samsung acknowledges very slow sales which it predicts will last for a while. It's fascinating to see some of their strategy:

"Looking ahead to the second half, Lee said the business environment will remain challenging as competition increases, with rivals releasing models with higher specifications and lower prices. In response, he said it aims to expand sales of flagship models by introducing a new Galaxy Note earlier than usual (due for unveiling next week) and “strengthen price competitiveness and adopt advanced technology in mass market models to aggressively respond to market conditions”."

I see a disconnect between the market and Samsung, especially in relation to their ever rising prices. Are consumers truly happy spending over 1k for a phone? I think if the argument that it's worth it was true then something like the Note series would not be a niche product as it has everything but the kitchen sink thrown at it. In my opinion we are hitting a price ceiling here, but Samsung isn't lowering prices, just releasing the Note 9 early. Is the issue that their phones are too expensive? Or that they are not putting in enough compelling features to entice users to upgrade, thus dealing with longer upgrade cycles and consumers keeping their phones longer? Most likely a combination of both. They also think that foldable (bendable?) screens may save them, but those are rumored to be 1.5x to 2x the cost of today's flagship phones, I'll bet they fall into the same rut as the Note series where they are a niche product to a certain segment.

Yes the elephant in the room is Apple which also continues to raise prices, but 1) even they lowered the next gen pricing by $100 (reportedly, we'll see if it's true) and 2) Apple lives in a different world where consumers actually do pay the exorbitant prices. It's not like Samsung is doing badly, I believe they've had some of the best returns ever some of these recent quarters. But they really need to rethink their flagship strategy.

Looking forward the world is saturated with smart phones, every manufacturer is jumping on the bandwagon trying to make a buck or two. And the consumers have many choices, it is no longer apple and samsung that can control the market. In the so called third world country or developing countries consumers just want their device to text, make call, browse internet, take pictures and connect to social media, the bell and whistle on the phone does not make sense.

If the rumours are true and Samsung really is having trouble with the S and Note series overlapping too much (which certainly would make sense), I wish they'd finally do what I've always been hoping for and differentiate them more by turning the Note into the true productivity beast it claims to be but never really was.

Make it even bigger and with a flat screen to better make use of the S Pen. If that's too niche to attract enough customers, give it a dual focus by profiling it also as a gaming monster by pushing graphics/120 Hz refresh rate/stereo speakers etc.

Meanwhile let the S series be the big-but-pocketable phone with the curved glass. Have it be S Pen compatible and make a slick book case that can house the pen, for those Note users who don't want to go bigger.

And presto, you have two very noticeably different phones, where one finally really does what no other smartphone does. I've always loved the Note series, but I've also always felt that it's kind of half assed compared to what it could be. Have the balls to make it a true beast. For a device like that, I wouldn't think twice about shelling out the big bucks. Too much compromising just muddies the brand identity and hurts sales.

All theory crafting from a non-pro of course ;) But damn it, that's what I'd like to see.

You and I are going to continue the fight for FLAT SCREENS!!! I definitely agree with your point. They either need to roll up the Note series and make it the S+ (which I advocated for years ago), or completely throw everything at the Note series and make it a tech enthusiast phone. There is nothing wrong with a tech enthusiast flagship, even if it doesn't sell like crazy. Something like that is meant to show off Samsung's skill.

But I think what they will do is make the Note series the new S+, and the new over the top enthusiast phone is going to be whatever they put out with a foldable (bendable?) screen. That was they can justify the high price for the S+ going forward and differentiate it from other possibly cheaper flagships, and at the same time introduce an entirely new market segment with an even higher price point.

Now if they actually did make the Note series a beast series I would love to see 16:9 form factor, 7" screen, dual stereo speakers UNDER the glass, edge to edge FLAT screen with minimal bezels, a reliable face ID and/or under screen FP sensor, a huge battery, and some kind of wireless docking station for use with an external monitor/kb/mouse that maybe driven with just a tiny usb dongle. Of course it has to have the latest and greatest hardware, refresh rate, etc.

I'd like it just for the screen ratio, I hate watching content on 3:4.

Luckily my old Tab S 10.5 is still great for watching video.
