The Verge review is out, which is the one I was looking most forward to.

https://www.theverge.com/2018/8/17/...-note-9-review-battery-specs-price-pen-stylus
It is a good review. You kinda get the sense though that the writer does not like large phones. Then you can tell right away that he is not a previous Note user.....never mentions the S-Pen until almost the end of the article. That is the highlight of the Note line. They should had someone else do the write up if he wasn't going to go over all the features....even ones you don't like. He showed a lot of bias against bigger phones.
He even says:
S Pen, it isn’t something that I found very useful

Yeah, I would have rather than seen Nilay do the review (he talked about using the phone for a bit and how he wanted it on the Vergecast). I certainly agree with your points.

It's only an ok review imo. The whole thing has that slightly negative tone to it which is so typical for the Verge, you know when it sounds like they're kind of forced to admit how good a gadget is even though they've already decided to not like it for whatever reason.

And yeah he really only touched on the S Pen functionality. "...jot down notes, doodle, or navigate the phone’s interface..." isn't a very comprehensive summary of its functionality tbh. I do a lot of quick photo/screenshot editing as well as marking up documents, maps and stuff on my iPhone, man do I look forward to again having a S Pen for that.

S Pen, it isn’t something that I found very useful

To be fair I think he was actually speaking about it's function as a remote: "The new feature this year is the ability to use the button on it as a remote [...] It’s neat, but as someone who’s never really found much use for the S Pen, it isn’t something that I found very useful."

On that point I do feel the same; currently using an Apple Watch I'm not terribly impressed with a pen that lets me snap a photo when I'm not seeing a preview of how the subject is positioned etc., or skip forward in a playlist or whatever. I wish they'd taken a different route with evolving the S Pen: let the blunt end be an actual digital eraser, or maybe give it a microphone.

More than anything though I wish they'd focused on the S Pen related software. Of course I don't know how it'll work this time around but I suspect I'll still be missing the killer note taking app which trumps all others, something a stylus as good as the S Pen always has begged to have alongside it. And a simple option to "convert everything" on a screen off memo to machine text. Now you probably still have to save as a note, open note, draw lasso & select convert to text...

So I'm with the reviewer in that software is where Samsung need to focus their efforts at this point. The Note 9 doesn't seem to come with almost anything new in this regard, aside from DeX which I personally can't see myself using...maybe ever. Just give me some straight up UX and S Pen related apps polishing though, and I'll bring out the champagne.

Lastly I really don't get the whole schtick of whining about the price. His whole review ends with "And having the most will cost you the most." Well...duh! $1099 is still cheaper than the 256GB iPhone X, right? Not to mention what the X Plus will cost... Bah. Flagship phones cost ~100 bucks and up nowadays, don't we already know that??

The Verge man...I just don't know. I'm looking forward more to the reviews from MKBHD, Tim Schofield, Flossy et al. But most of all from myself of course :D dying to get my hands on that thing!!!

So Cal.
What sucks is that I love how fun the Samsung devices are. Probably the coolest phones out there. But too many times I think “oh it would be great to watch one of my purchased iTunes movies or FaceTime someone. Damn you Apple!!!
Really... download showbox.apk from the web, watch any movie plus actual recent ones still in the cinema for free.. in full hd.. then fb video chat your mate, or whatsapp video chat.. the chances of your friend not having both of those apps is next to zero..

What were you saying again....

Anyone switched from stock Android (Nexus/pixel) to Samsung recently? I'm coming from an OG Pixel XL which I got as a warranty replacement for my Nexus 6p about a year ago. Usually I would be all about the Pixel 3 XL but the leaks are really disappointing to say the least and the price will likely be in the same ball park.

I've always kind of wanted a note (I'm talking since the Note 4) but software always scared me away. The specs of the note 9 are VERY tempting and since I haven't made a phone purchase in 3 years I feel a bit more justified in splurging.

Thoughts?
Samsung software is excellent these days.. so much more feature rich than stock without being too much..

The only thing I use my S-Pen for is text extraction, but it's a killer feature and I use it a handful of times each month. I find the screen way too small to take notes on.

I think all the reviews are going to follow the same theme: great device, expensive, Samsung - love it or hate it. Flossy will lose his stuff over the phone initially, and then in a few months while reviewing something else he'll casually mention how it started lagging on him.

One thing that has started to eat at me a bit: what am I essentially paying for with the Note 9 over, say, the S9+? I appreciate the s-pen for sure, but I really don't use it very much at all. So now I'm kinda having second thoughts about the Note. And this is why I also kinda hate how Sammy has evolved the line. It used to be *the* power flagship phone released each year. The last two years, it feels like an iteration of the "plus" model released a few months before. A +Plus, so to speak.

They do every year don’t they.

If your hesitant. Just wait.

Galaxy Prices drop pretty quick once the iPhone X plus and google pixel 3 drops next month.
And since premium galaxy sales are pretty bad this year. I’m sure by thanksgiving they are going to be giving the note 9 away.

You do have a point. Not much to differentiate between the the two; stylus, an extra 2gb of ram and larger battery.

That's always the case, and yet I jump when released because that "early adopter" gene kicks in. Although I honestly don't even know what I'm adopting early anymore. I already had a Note 9, when it was called the "S9+"

Uh oh. Interest is plummeting. :(

There is nooooo way the extra 2gb of RAM make much of a difference. If I get the note, of course i'll have to get the 8gb version because...if I get a phone, I want the best possible version of it. But that's a personal flaw not at all based on real world usage.

They already started giving it away before it was even for sale yet with all the BOGO's announced!!

Did you get a free tv and cash back and bulan(whatever that is) with your note?
No, you could do better.

Whatever deal is offered now, will pale to the discounts Samsung will offer after the iPhone X plus and pixel 3xl get released.

They are getting quite aggressive here too. They are offering £200 on top of the trade in value. So for a note 8 they are offering almost £600 off and the phone starts at £899 here.

He even says:

Actually Dan Seifert did the review for both the Note 8 and Note 7 for the Verge and he’s a pretty big fan of Android over iOS. I also think not being a fan of large phones is applicable to the review. The Verge’s audience isn’t solely Android geek power users who are already likely going to get the Note 9, but rather all general consumers. I think the size of the device, in regards to the general consumer who may be considering a switch to a Note, is important. Those are the folks who need to decide if the phone is too big. And let’s face it, as efficient as Samsung is with the design (high screen to body ratio), it’s a damn big phone.

Yeah, I would have rather than seen Nilay do the review (he talked about using the phone for a bit and how he wanted it on the Vergecast). I certainly agree with your points.

There certainly might be some value in having a different perspective on the Note line but I think there is also value in having the same person who’s reviewed the last two Notes do this review as well, especially as it compares to those past models.

You’re sort of taking his ‘having the most will cost you the most’ a bit out of context though. Pair it with the paragraph that immediately proceeds it and I think his meaning is a bit more clear. To quote:

The biggest compromise is in its price, which is hundreds of dollars more than what the very-similar Galaxy S9 Plus sells for right now. The S9 Plus has the same camera system; same processor; a nearly as-big, just as gorgeous display; and basically the same software experience. The Note 9 ups the ante with notably better battery life and the S Pen, but only one of those will be universally appreciated.

He’s implying that the changes from Samsung’s own S9 Plus are quite limited yet those few differences come at a fairly significant cost.

At the end of the day, I think it’s still a pretty fair review, with a pretty damn good score. Yes, it could focus more on the S-Pen but save for the new BT LE functionality, is it really that different from the Note 8?

Well if you were in Australia or Singapore, Samsung was selling the 512 8gb for the price of the 128/6.

But I know what you mean since your not going to use the Spen, note 9 was basically a s9 plus you have had since March. Meh.

You know, I've always wondered why they bother pricing it so high even in light of the poor sales, if they offer so many discounts on it. I find it hard to believe that many truly buy it full price. Do they think they will tarnish their reputation if they don't price their phones similar to Apple? Obviously that's not working for them. Look at Huawei who is nipping at their heels, they are smart in pricing their phones substantially below Samsung and Apple. I don't know why Samsung just doesn't sell the Note 9 at something like $700 versus say $600 for a S9+, I'll bet they would sell a lot more of them without needing so many BOGO's, discounts and freebie high ticket accessories like memory cards and headphones.

It's a marketing strategy, people feel more inclined to buy if they feel it's on sale. Also, it helps them move more inventory with the included accessories, you can bet they are still making a decent profit even while including the free headset, and the bogos are partially offset by the carriers, that why most require you to open a new line.

Part of what is making me consider this phone is Flossy’s comment about his Note 8 lagging, but that his S9 has no lag. So he thinks they’ve ‘figured it out’ and that the Note 9 will not lag.. Hoping he is right!

Yeah, my S9 has been fantastic, and scaling the power to the Note 9 is what really tempted me too. The S8 and Note 8 we're big disappointments to me.

Isn’t it customary to offer free gifts in Korea with products?

Samsung fans are so arrogant. If you say anything negative to them they will downvote you to death (Reddit)

I had nearly every galaxy at launch. Last year was the first time in ages I didn’t buy one. It was also my first iPhone. I don’t care what anyone says, this is not the phone to get if you want YEARS out of it. If you only want it until the note 10 or something in 2019 then I get it, but people keep talking about how future proof this phone is and all that, but I just think a lot of people who buy it intending on keeping it for years will buy the note 10 if it has 5g. Speeds are fast now, but 5g could change a lot of how we use our phones. I also think the 4000mah battery will not be all that it’s cracked up to be. The 3600mah s7 edge had very good battery life, but it couldn’t compare to the cheaper midrange battery king phones like the z play. If this was really a “gaming phone that has it all” it needed 5000mah. I’m sure the complaints will come pouring in from kids who can’t play fortnite for more than X amount of hours before it dies. I give Samsung a lot of credit, though. On paper it’s pretty hard to question this phone unless you despise Samsung and couldn’t go in with an open mind. Some people (mostly stock android fanatics) couldn’t possibly allow themselves to like a Samsung product “because touchwiz lag bro”, but it’s so much better now than it was. I just think the 512gb monster should also have been given a 5000mah battery. It also makes me think about how long a 4000mah iPhone would last. A light user could probably stretch it 4 days or more on a single charge. Apple will never go that route, though.

Don’t forget flossy was also in a Samsung ad. Not saying he is being paid off, but yeah. I used to watch all his videos, but the act got tired. Everything is a “major go” and he uses the same formula for each one. He’s an entertainer first and foremost. If I want an honest phone review my top choices are mr mobile or Erica griffin.

Well, not every carrier is doing a BOGO, and the ones that do require you add a new line of service. If it was Samsung, they wouldn’t care if you added a new line or not, plus it would be available across the board, including unlocked models.
