My 2 cents after having the Note 8 for a year... It's a nice upgrade but not worth forking out a grand or more. As mentioned in other threads, my employer purchased the phone for me and is paying for my service otherwise I would not have upgraded. The camera is better but not by a lot. The biggest upgrade over the 8 is battery life and the speaker volume. Also, the fingerprint sensor is located in a better position vs the 8. It is a great phone don't get me wrong but if you are on using the 8 I would skip the 9 and wait for the 10.

Well, my Note 9 gets pretty warm when I charge it for a bit.

https://electrek.co/2018/05/04/are-you-killing-your-lithium-batteries/
The max gets hot when it’s fast charged as did my X. They all get hot. If you change your phone every 1-2 years then fast charging won’t really have an impact on the battery.

I already have a usb c fast charger that I used with my X and my iPad Pro and now my max but it would have been nice if Apple had included one in the box like everyone else.

Yeah this thread got derailed badly from what I can tell. Didn't mean to drop in and add to that. The Note9 as we all know is a fantastic device. :)
Yeah, using the iPhone X S Max, Mate 20 Pro and Note9 along side each other made me realize why I still prefer the Galaxy Note devices over everything else. The SPen, the way the UI is just so well laid out (absolutely fantastic usage of space in the Samsung UX, symmetry is everything!), and the sheer presence of the whole device all just add up to a great all-round device. The Note9 just screams premium productivity tool. The Note9 display is also nice and wide, really like that, it's even wider than the Note8 display which is also wider than most of these tall screened devices.

My conclusion is:

iPhone X S Max - Simplicity & Eco System
Mate 20 Pro - Road Warrior & Spec Beast
Galaxy Note9 - Productivity & Media Tool

You cannot go wrong with any of them.

Random thought: I still have my Note9 but not as my daily driver, and one thing I miss having readily available when I'm out is Samsung Pay. The MTS tech is absolutely awesome. Also as I've been using it the past week or so for some split-screen and PiP streaming and such around the house, I'm realizing again just how pissed off I am at Apple for my XS Max not having these capabilities.

You have those screenshots of your iPhone usage yet? With all those heavy apps you use since all us note 9 users just "read books"?

How about you show us this $400 Note 9 receipt like we continue to ask and you have yet to prove. Then I'll show you my battery.

You didn't debunk anything. I know my usage and know its the same on both phones and the Max absolutely kills my Note 9 in battery life. End of discussion.

iPhone Xs Max battery outlasts Galaxy Note9 and Pixel 3 XL in new test
[doublepost=1540256364][/doublepost]

Let's see, N9 30-40% left, iPhone XS Max, 70%. That is pretty big difference in my usage.

so post your usage lol. its just a screen shot. lets see this thing destroy the screen shot i posted above. simple.
[doublepost=1540257274][/doublepost]
Also, with that, doesn't mean the Max doesn't beat the N9 like some continue to think otherwise. I'll gladly post proof of the iPhones battery life once I go back to work and start using my phone more than my PC since I've been on vacation for the past week.

back tracking already? "gladly" post proof eh?

Even your own pieces of evidence show them being very close in battery life. A 12 minute difference is not exactly absolutely killing the Note 9 as you suggested. Not to mention there are plenty of tests where the Note 9 wins floating around as well as many tech reviewers saying actual battery life in real day to day usage has the Note 9 winning.

"The XS Max lasted through a little more than six hours of “intense testing,” the Note 9 croaked about 12 minutes before that"

I have no idea which one lasts longer but even one of the reviews he posted said that the max squeaks past the note 9. That’s not absolutely killing it.

I currently have the note 8 and am able to upgrade inabout a weeks time. I'm really torn on whether to keep the 8, upgrade to the note 9, switch over to the pixel 3xl or go back to apple and try the XS max. I guess it's a nice first world problem to have but the decision is driving me mad! My last 2 phones were Samsung so I'm inclined to try something else but equally o know what a power house the note is and I don't want to regret switching away!

People seem to forget like yourself that is one example of a loaded down constant usage. With more idle time and other types of apps and usage that number gets wider.

Yeah cool, re-read my post. That signals towards a defective Note9 battery. I own both, neither has a problem, and they are close enough in battery life that it’s neglibile at best. I’d give a slight edge to my Note9.

It’s not defective. Per androidcentral it’s what the phone gets for average use. Others got the same amount as I did for my usage. Like I said people who get 9 hours or so per others on androidcentral are just web browsing like I am doing now typing this, or reading a book, listening to music, etc. nothing that pulls on the cpu a lot of gpu.

Here on the front page at MacRumors....
Doesn't sound like domination to me....
On the Tom's Guide Battery Test, which involves continuous web surfing at 150 nits of screen brightness, the iPhone XR lasted 11 hours and 26 minutes. That beats the times from the iPhone XS Max (10:38) and iPhone XS (9:41) by a significant margin. The Pixel 3 XL lasted only 9:30, while the Galaxy Note 9 also endured for 11:26.

So it looks like the iPhone Xr is the new battery king for iPhones...with the Note 9 lasting just as long.....

Whatever, I’m not looking to debate it endlessly like other folks will, and we will agree to disagree. I’m just telling you that I use both phones the exact same way and in my experience the Note9 is slightly better, but it’s negligible at best. I’ll stand by my thought that there was a defect with your Note9 battery.

I’ll also tell you from my experience, any “CPU-intensive” task I do on both zaps a little more juice from the XS Max. SOT on time is better on the Note for me, but standby time is better on the XS Max. At the end of the day, they both last me well through an entire day.

You can post these articles and videos from internet sources all day, but nothing replicates what individual users will experience day-to-day and it's already been said in this very thread enough times, by hands-on users, that the Note9 has a great battery. It's unfortunate you apparently didn't have the same experience, but the experiences of a few do not outweigh the experiences of the many for me.

What you have described falls right in line with almost all the tech reviews of the 2 phones.

Played with this phone a good bit at the store, very impressive, super smooth, beautiful, makes me want to switch - even after playing with the xs and xs max

the only criticism I have is length of software support, I want more patches!

looks like bootloader is locked tight in the USA, custom roms for year 4, 5 and beyond would make it a little easier to swallow for me

if you are going to lock it down I want more patches!

I like how samsung seems to be heading their own way now, if there is one more thing I want them to copy apple on, it's software support!

I was a bit of a stock android snob in the past, but forget it.. I wasn't having any problems with samsung's rom. The new pixels seem so underwhelming (havent played with them firsthand though)

Enough with the "switching" just buy the phone, do monthly plan even, and then when bired with brand A pick up your S brand or what you want, and be happy, and you've got a backup phone jic.

I run two lines so it was an easy decision to try for the XS Max when I found out the killer feature of stereo audio recording had finally been implemented in an iPhone. The Max display did cause problems for me so now I wait for an XR 256 GB Yellow to arrive tomorrow.

It’s my Android line that’s got me in the same position as you. I had a Note 9 on preorder with an S8+ trade in to sweeten the deal. But I didn’t go through with it. I decided to wait for prices on the Note 9 to drop further.

I did want to get back into Notes for the S-Pen.

But oh no, oh no oh no Samsung looks on the brink of releasing the Kraken!

The S10 with no notches. In display fingerprint reader. Front facing Camera leaked to be in the display and invisible somehow. No speaker, but bone conduction tech.

Of course I have proven to have a weird hyper sensitive physiology. It’s not just the Apple patented power management calibration of the OLED display that did my head in, I also can’t use my AirPods without getting a massive painful ramp up of my usually quiet “demure” tinnitus.

So I’m a bit wary of how the bone conduction tech will work for me. I won’t be able to be an early adopter for this. I might even have to be patient and wait to see all the new stuff come to the Note 10 if there’s a lot of teething problems with the new technology on the S10.

Meanwhile, my S9+ and I are chilling like villains together. Even my hated S8+ is still serving in VR. This crazy upgrade lady isn’t feeling like upgrading anytime soon.

It’s so weird for me, because when the Note 9 was announced, I felt it was everything I wanted my Samsung/Android phone to be and to have. I was crazy enthusiastic for it. My S9+ was great but I thought the S10 was a perfected version of everything I loved about my S9+.

It is weird to come to the gradual realization I really do want to maximize the use of what I have and just wait.
