Let's not even get started on the app folder page thing they've implemented. Train wreck of a job they've done on something that had potential

Apps sorted into folders with no rhyme or reason to the groupings.
Yes that completely ruined iOS 14 for me. What a train wreck! The widgets are ok but you can't interact with them.

What apps have updated to support ios 14? My first impressions of it was very half baked and the fact you can't place it where you want is a downside.

Its certainly a good start but needs alot of work to get as good as android widgets
Widgets on IOS 14 is half baked and in its infantile stages. It is no where near what can be found on ANY Android phone.
Especially when you get into the 1000s of independent software offerings that are out there.
Then you STILL can't rearrange icons and widgets where you want them.

Right? Like every time I'm back on Android, I forget how great this Spotify Playlist widget is.

Meh. I’m enjoying the iOS 14 widgets. I never used Android widgets, but I am using iOS 14 widgets. Speaks volumes for me.

Some of my favorites so far: Apollo, Copilot, Highlighted, Shortcuts, WaterMinder, and Things. I’m sure there will be more as developers start to update their apps.

Like I have said before...there are some that come into the Alternative section and fake interest in Android phones...then go on to say over and over again how much the iPhone and IOS is better.....Even though we know what they spew is not remotely accurate.

Like I would get the Note but now that Apple has this or this or ______ insert comment. It is all the same in the end...Fake news

Apollo, specifically, is an example of poor implementation. I don't need to see one static article on the widget all the time, I need to be able to interact with it by swiping through articles directly on the widget to see if anything is interesting enough to then click into the app and read deeper.

I just don’t see the purpose of interacting with widgets that way. If I want to interact deeper with the widget, I will just go into the app. The Apollo widget shows me the top posts in a subreddit (or subreddits) of my choosing, and by selecting each headline, it will take me to the respective post. This implementation makes sense to me.

Would be nice to be able to resize widgets and move them around. Then widgets on Android are so much more evolved and elegant than on IOS. I was setting up my new Fold 2 while I installed IOS 14 on my 11 Pro Max. I was playing around with widgets on both 11 pro max and fold 2 and they are night and day different in widget implementation.
Android lets you decide how you want things to look. Apple tells you how THEY want things to look for you.

That widget isn't bad by any means, per se, but that would also take up like 75% of your usable home screen space. The 2x2 square one only shows on article at a time. I can't remember if the small one takes you directly to the article shown on the widget, but if it does, that's inconvenient if you're just trying to get into the app. Also, to dive deeper on the widgets, if you want to change the size you have to completely remove and add the bigger ones which is another loss of them not being interactive. Again, inconvenient.

For me unless you can re-size to how you want and actually interact with it then you may as well just click the app

So really it’s not a real widget on iOS. Hopefully it improves but there’s only so much developers can do. Maybe there is a limitation within iOS for this.

Still least it’s better than nothing at all. The App Library is what is truly awful.

There’s definitely no denying that iOS 14 widgets could be better. I would love scrollable widgets and to have the ability to place them anywhere on the screen. Will Apple ever allow that? Eh. Maybe in a year or two. But I’m satisfied with the current implementation.

But I have to say: nothing beats Samsung’s calendar widget. That’s a well-designed widget.

I do have to say that it's not all bad though. There definitely is freedom for developers to make some really cool looking widgets that blend well with iOS's design language. iOS has always been a cohesive experience from a design standpoint. But my main gripe with Apple in 2020 is that they seem to be on this train of form-over-function, in all aspects of their business, and in turn hinder usability with the overall experience of the product.

Just yesterday I was messing with Overdrop (weather app) widgets on Android, and the options are almost endless with their widgets in terms of design style, size, layout, placement. They really nailed it on both form an function, as one small example.

I agree. I really don’t understand why Apple decided to make iOS 14 widgets non-interactive unlike iOS 13 widgets. Why? It makes no sense to me. Also, Apple’s own Calendar widget is awful. Look at all that empty space. Why?? Why not just allow the space to be populated with more future events? Ridiculous. Thankfully, the Fantastical widget looks a lot more promising and better designed.

Last thing I'll say is, I'd actually trust third party developers to do better, and more with widgets in respect to their own apps vs Apple with the core iOS apps, ha.

It’s sad but it’s true. I’m literally not using any of Apple’s own widgets. The laziness... whew.

The last Android phone I had was a Samsung S3 from 2012. That 8 year old phone had way better widgets than what Apple just released on iOS14 yesterday. Widgets are actually one of the things I really missed about Android when I went back to Apple in 2013. I just checked and most of my apps haven't been updated for widgets so I don't have a big selection to choose from just yet besides the Apple stock widgets. But just the ones I've played with don't seem very good at all, but I'm also comparing them to what I used to do on Android widgets. You've never used Android widgets so you don't really have anything to compare to...but trust me, they are better than these apple widgets lol

I'm not ready to switch to Android YET lol. But that could be a possibility in the future. I'll never say never.

My brother in law is a huge Samsung guy and I have Apple. So I am always triggering him on purpose. I sent him a text this morning "Did you see Apple invented widgets in iOS14" just to see his head explode ROFL

LOL...I use both Android and iPhones. I like to trigger both sides sometimes. It is fun to see the reaction...until they catch on.

I will say, the Weather widget on iOS is nice. It knows what to display at the right time, especially with rain. I just wish Apple would allow for "background transparency".

Used wireless Dex for the first time yesterday and pretty cool! It worked decent with the Miracast single I have but would probably work better if I actually ponied up for a TV that wasn't made in 2012.

It's not "hard" it's just getting used to setting everything up and being patient with your choice. I've been guilty of giving up too quickly because of little annoyances. If you're going to switch, make sure you're all in.
